SUMMARY OF THE 2008 CILICIA SURVEY<br />

The fifth (2008) season of Mopsos Landscape Archaeology Project in the<br />

Bay of İskenderun took place during four weeks from June 26th to July 25th.<br />

During the 2008 season, participants included. Ann E. Killebrew (project<br />

director, Pennsylvania State Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity, Gunnar Lehmann (co-director, Ben-<br />

Gurion Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity), Marie-Henriette Gates (Bilkent Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity) and Sandra<br />

Scham (Catholic Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity) who ser<strong>ve</strong>d as project archaeologists and<br />

consultants. Pete van Rossum (Pennsylvania State Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity) was the project<br />

GIS specialist. F. Sancar Ozaner (Abant İzzet Baysal Üni<strong>ve</strong>rsitesi) ser<strong>ve</strong>d<br />

as the project geomorphologist. Field sur<strong>ve</strong>yors included Ben Bradshaw,<br />

Amanda Iacobelli, Brandon Olson, Thad Olson, Jeff Herrick, Andrea Gatzke,<br />

Juan Manuel Tebes, Michael Prescott II, Müge Durusu and Volkan Güngördü.<br />

The sur<strong>ve</strong>y was also graciously assisted by Sn. Zerrin Akdoğan,<br />

representing the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Department of Cultural<br />

Affairs and Museums, which kindly renewed permission for the continuation<br />

of this sur<strong>ve</strong>y. The sur<strong>ve</strong>y members once again wish to express their thanks<br />

to the Ministry and to its exceptional representati<strong>ve</strong> Sn. Akdoğan for their<br />

interest and contribution to the season’s successful outcome.<br />

Our 2008 research project was supported by the Pennsylvania State,<br />

Bilkent, and Ben-Gurion Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsities. During the 2008 season, the sur<strong>ve</strong>y<br />

included the Arsuz and Payas regions. The sur<strong>ve</strong>y methodology combined<br />

intensi<strong>ve</strong> exploration within the built-up area of the city of Arsuz and<br />

industrialized areas of Payas, and intensi<strong>ve</strong> field walking in transects of 30<br />
