SUMMARY OF THE 2008 CILICIA SURVEY
(İSKENDERUN BAY REGION)

The fifth (2008) season of Mopsos Landscape Archaeology Project in the
Bay of İskenderun took place during four weeks from June 26th to July 25th.
During the 2008 season, participants included. Ann E. Killebrew (project
director, Pennsylvania State University, Gunnar Lehmann (co-director, Ben-
Gurion University), Marie-Henriette Gates (Bilkent University) and Sandra
Scham (Catholic University) who served as project archaeologists and
consultants. Pete van Rossum (Pennsylvania State University) was the project
GIS specialist. F. Sancar Ozaner (Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi) served
as the project geomorphologist. Field surveyors included Ben Bradshaw,
Amanda Iacobelli, Brandon Olson, Thad Olson, Jeff Herrick, Andrea Gatzke,
Juan Manuel Tebes, Michael Prescott II, Müge Durusu and Volkan Güngördü.
The survey was also graciously assisted by Sn. Zerrin Akdoğan,
representing the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Department of Cultural
Affairs and Museums, which kindly renewed permission for the continuation
of this survey. The survey members once again wish to express their thanks
to the Ministry and to its exceptional representative Sn. Akdoğan for their
interest and contribution to the season’s successful outcome.
Our 2008 research project was supported by the Pennsylvania State,
Bilkent, and Ben-Gurion Universities. During the 2008 season, the survey
included the Arsuz and Payas regions. The survey methodology combined
intensive exploration within the built-up area of the city of Arsuz and
industrialized areas of Payas, and intensive field walking in transects of 30
