ange going from the Late Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity. Two mosaic
floors come from a Hellenistic house excavated in 1991 about 200 m west
of the Maussolleion terrace. These mosaics were lifted and brought to
the Maussolleion grounds since a modern house was going to be built on
the original site. 2 One floor is preserved in its entirety, while the other is
fragmentary. These floors display excellent craftsmanship and have special
features such as a wave crest whose tesserae were set in place by using thin
lead strips (Fig. 4). The style of these mosaics indicates that they should be
dated around 100 B.C.
A couple of rooms in an ancient building were revealed during construction
of a house in the centre of Halikarnassos in 1990, immediately north of Turgut
Reis Street. At least one of the rooms contained a mosaic pavement. When
this mosaic was lifted, it turned out that another mosaic was laid below it,
and this pavement was lifted as well. Both mosaics were rescued by the staff
of Bodrum Museum and taken to the Castle where they have been kept ever
since. Restoration work on these mosaics has now commenced in cooperation
with the Danish Halikarnassos project. The upper mosaic has a white ground
and contains a panel with confronted panthers drinking wine from an
elaborate crater. This panel was surrounded by various geometric borders,
and may be dated to the 5th century A.D. The mosaic floor below this awaits
restoration, and an elegant floral border can be distinguished.
Two mosaic floors are located in the Bodrum Museum. One, consisting of
many fragments, was found some years ago as a result of building activity
in Bodrum and rescued then by the Museum. It forms part of a presumably
larger mosaic. When it was lifted it broke into pieces, and these fragments
were brought to the museum and re-laid near the German Tower. It was
not attempted to reconstruct the original appearance from the collected
fragments. By re-studying the various fragments in 2008, it was possible to
reconstruct the original sequence of the borders, which included a row of
small stepped pyramids, an ivy scroll, a bead-and-reel, and perhaps a frieze
