Yaşar Yıldız submitted the plans for the “Muğla Koruma Kurulu” who
approved the project under the condition that the building will be erected in
the upper court-yard of the castle in the area below the French Tower. The
area was then cleared and it is now ready for construction work to begin in
2009. A model of the planned gallery was constructed by conservator Benni
2. Study Of Pottery Finds From The Maussolleion Excavations 1966-1977
Amphora stamps from the Maussolleion of Halikarnassos
In 2002, the pottery from a number of selected deposits from the
Maussolleion and its related structures was published as volume 7 in the
Maussolleion series. The stamped transport amphora handles found in these
deposits were included in that publication. They provide important evidence
for the dating of some of the deposits in question.
While preparing the publication of these, John Lund of the National
Museum in Denmark became aware that slightly more than 500 additional
stamped transport amphora handles are kept in the store rooms of the Bodrum
museum, which also had been found during Kristian Jeppesen’s excavations
of the site between 1966 and 1977. They are of a considerable interest even if
few were found in closed contexts.
John Lund began recording these stamped amphora handles in 2001, and
he continued this work in 2008. He hopes to complete the recording of these
finds in 2009, and shall then be in a position to conduct a detailed analysis
of the total body of material, which has important implications for our
understanding of what took place on the Maussolleion terrace in the centuries
after the burial of Maussollos, and which is also important for the economic
history of Halikarnassos at large in the Hellenistic period.
A very preliminary study of the already recorded evidence has shown that
the stamped handles support the evidence for the continued importance of
