1. Study of the Inscriptions from Halikarnassos in the Museum of Bodrum and
Work on an Exhibition of Inscriptions
The study of ancient inscriptions in the Museum and Castle was continued
by Signe Isager and Poul Pedersen, with the aim of preparing a total corpus
of all inscriptions from Halikarnassos and of selecting material for a new
inscription gallery in the Museum in the Castle.
A considerable quantity of the stones bearing ancient inscriptions was
systematically documented. The procedure functioned well and some
preliminary results are planned to be published soon.
The inscriptions consist both of inscriptions that have already been
published by earlier researchers and inscriptions that have never been
published before (Figs. 1- 2). All inscriptions are now being studied and
described more carefully than before as it is taken into consideration also
on which kind of stone the inscriptions have been written. Some were of
course inscribed on stelae, but many others were inscribed on statue bases,
monuments and on the walls of ancient buildings, while they were still
standing and in use. By studying the architectural details and the material
it is possible to compare these observations with architectural remains
observed in the city area and thus produce new and valuable evidence on the
ancient city of Halikarnassos and its topography. It is our plan to extend this
procedure also to ancient inscriptions from Halikarnassos now kept in the
British Museum and other places as well as to inscriptions that no longer exist
but were recorded and described by early travellers.
Signe Isager’s study of the inscriptions in the Castle has already led to new
readings and new insights into relations between important Halikarnassian
families in Hellenistic and Roman times as well as to other aspects of life in
ancient Halikarnassos.
The plans for the erection of an exhibition-stoa in the Museum of Bodrum
were carried a great step further in 2008. The director of Bodrum Museum,
