Juxtaposition of Opposites from
Sustainability Perspective in
Textile Industry
Hakan YILSELI Phd Student
hakanyilseli@gmail.com
T
Textile industry has been associated with the
environmental challenges and social concerns
along with the carbon footprint for recent years.
Sustainability has been one of the most crucial
and pioneer subject in textile as it is main industry
for emerging economies due to its strengthening
instruments like labor force, export intensity and
overall value for countries.
Discovering the synergy of arguments in textile
industry can pave the way for sustainable production,
innovative and modern technologies and
ethical considerations. The only need is belief and
bravely application!
Recently, new phenomena of luxury is pervasive in
fashion; silent luxury. Textile is associated with the
usual fast fashion for years and new designs, models,
types were introduced with vast and vibrant
selection of colors with different kind of fabrics
and variety of other alternatives. The juxtaposition
of opposites in the textile industry from a sustainable
perspective signifies a paradigm shift. It
dramatically challenges the industry to reconsider
its traditional practices. Silent luxury is only one
perspective and opponent for fast fashion. Textile
industry has strong arguments with biodegradable,
natural and recycled fabrics which are important
challenges to aim a better future.
Awareness plays a pivotal role in truly contributing
to sustainable life in the realm of juxtaposition
of opposites in textile. While avoiding the use of
cotton due to its water consumption rate, the circular
economy and widely usage of cotton should
be considered on the other side. At this point, the
paradigm shift get involved in process. Completely
the value chain with suppliers, producers and consumers
should be involved to new paradigm that
offers to act on sustainable way in every purchasing
manner. The ultimate aim of this new paradigm
should be only a concious commen sense for a
better future for every one without any discrimination
or disregarding the entire World! As the textile
sector navigates the path towards sustainability,
the juxtaposition of opposites emerges as a powerful
tool for transformation, offering a perspective
and paradigm into a better future for everyone.

Gritty, the new collection of Persan,
Dokumacı brand, is a modern,
sophisticated collection that
prioritizes comfort and convenience
in living spaces and reflects current
decoration trends.
Brave,
strong and
sophisticated
fabrics with different thicknesses of curly yarns give dimension to
the fabrics and stand out with their rough surfaces, while offering a simple
elegance NNatural
for interiors and stylish options in many different textures carefully
crafted.
In the Gritty Collection, where dynamic geometric patterns are predominantly
used, intertwined linear patterns resembling a labyrinth and contrasting
block-colored patterns stand out.
The stylized damask pattern, with its modern matte look and natural blended
content, effortlessly yet perfectly harmonizes with geometric patterns.
Wide-striped, high-pile velvet and fur-like upholstery whisper luxury with
their unique soft touch, while houndstooth patterns, enriched with shimmering
yarns and giving a three-dimensional effect with their embossed
chenille texture, leave an elegant, stylish impression.
Upholstery, which offers a wide range of combinations with a rich variety of
textures and patterns, is complemented with sophisticated drapery using
a combination of several different techniques such as cutting, burning and
printing.
In the color palette of the Gritty Collection, powder, earth, cinnamon and
Arctic blue tones, as well as black-ecru combination and smoke grays stand
out.

Sorbe
a deep and
luxurious look
Persan’s new upholstery fabric
collection Sorbe consists of high
pile jacquard velvets. The velvets,
whose three-dimensional appearance
generates an appliqué effect, are as
attractive as the sorbets that give the
collection its name.

I
In the collection, the intense damask pattern and geometric linear pattern
are accompanied by a leaf motif with small reports, and this sweet harmony
is complemented by plain, matte velvet. The upholstery with ikat effect,
inspired by ethnic motifs, is a special chenille with natural content that complements
the monochrome velvets. The upholstery, which stands out with
color transitions in different tones, has a deep and luxurious appearance.
In the Sorbe Collection, which attracts attention with its wide color palette,
white, chickpea, blue, navy blue, pink, yellow and green tones were used in
addition to earth tones.
“Vellteks Fabrics will have
a more elegant and natural
appearance in 2024...”
Upholstery fabrics
are one of the most
important elements that
attract attention in our
homes and can carry
our interior designs to
different dimensions. It
determines the comfort,
durability and aesthetic
appearance of our
furniture.
V
Vellteks strives to offer the right quality to its customers at the right time and with the right look. “As we
enter a new year, we are slowly saying goodbye to the neutral and earthy tones of last year. This year we embrace
the cheerful, bold and energetic tones of the color trends of the two decades after the 70s. In addition
to the courage and naturalness of using shades of white, we include the energy of red, the dynamism of blue
and the peaceful calmness of green in our products,” says the company official and adds: “We plan to keep
functionality and aesthetics in balance this year with our designs that will adapt to the modern minimalist
style of the new year and at the same time offer the comfort sought. We believe in the power of pattern art
and aim to offer a creative look with our unlimited digital printed patterns that can take the aesthetic perception
to a completely different dimension.”

Furnishing Fabric Fashion
Old styles intertwined
with modernist and
natural attitude...

27
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
H
Houses are now our dream cocoons, giant sofas that embrace us, not sit us
down, textures that wrap us in a cocoon effect, bohemian effects that suit winter
are our attitude in 2024. Palazzo’s inspirations are for homes with a travelling
spirit and ancestral tastes...
Nature is the greatest artist...
The tactile revolution felt with curls turns into a more pressurised effect. Large
knots, natural crags and the pure warmth of wool envelop the spaces. White,
cream, mink tones are surrounded by greens and pinks washed with grey. Dressing
the spaces turns into a forest walk effect. Moss greens, fungi pinks keep the
northern style alive to the fullest.

28
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
This pastoral modernist attitude is wrapped in
straight lines. Woods are accompanied by grey and
black browns. This naturalist attitude appears as a
new generation of curls in Palazzo.
Vasarely’s legacy!
New generation straights harmonise with optical patterns.
Victor Vasarely, the spirit of Verner Pantone, the
pop spirit of the 1960s create a cheerful maturity. In this
world, which we can call new generation vintage, colours
are more natural than before.

29
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
The combination of daring forms and daring colours is the
signature of the period. With an absurd approach, the new
vintage spoils our homes.
New elegance...
Velvet and chenille have symbolised luxury for years. We recreate
this elegant world with chenille. Colours and gradient tones meet
each other, modern geometry creates sculptural volumes in the traditional
chenille texture. Whether large or small, the elegant touch is
evident.

Curtain Fabric
Trends 2024
Curtain fabrics are an
integral part of interior
design in the UK,
shaping the aesthetics
of our spaces while
adding warmth and a
touch of sophistication.
With increased emphasis
on personal style and
sustainability, the curtain
fabric industry is poised
for innovative changes
in curtain fabric trends
2024.
A
A significant trend for curtain fabrics is a return to natural and
sustainable materials. Organic linen, hemp, and cotton fabrics
will become the fabric choices of discerning UK customers in
2024. Besides being environmentally friendly, these fabrics lend
a timeless appeal and tactile warmth to spaces. Sustainability is
not just about materials; expect to see the increased popularity
of ethically sourced and fair-trade fabrics.
Moreover, biophilic design, a trend that bridges the gap between
nature and interior spaces, is set to influence curtain
fabrics in 2024. It emphasizes the use of colours and patterns
that evoke nature’s serenity, fostering relaxation and calmness in
homes. Botanical prints, rich forest greens, soft meadow pastels,
and tones of earth and sky will be favourites for curtain fabrics.
In terms of textures, tactile fabric choices are expected to grow.
The velvety fabrics of 2021 and 2022 will be replaced by softer
weaves, raw linens, and woven wools for an engaging and cozy
ambiance.
Geometric patterns have seen an increased demand over the
years and are predicted to stay trendy in 2024. Minimalistic
geometric designs bring an air of modern elegance to rooms.
Monochrome will remain a classic, but adventurous homeowners
will experiment with bolder colours like ochre, indigo, and
burnt orange.

34
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
Multi-functional curtains are anticipated to rise in
popularity in 2024
In addition, multi-functional curtains are anticipated to rise in popularity in
2024. Innovations like thermal curtains for energy efficiency, light-filtering fabrics
for mood lighting, and sound-proof curtains for quieter spaces align with the
demand for functional living spaces. Blackout curtains that minimize external
light and noise will also be essential, especially for urban dwellers.
Minimalism, as a prevailing aesthetic in interior design, is also forecasted to
impact curtain fabric choices. Consumers will seek out solid-coloured fabrics or
fabrics with small, understated designs to blend seamlessly with their existing
décor. Additionally, colours like ivory, stone grey, muted teal, and sage green will
dominate for their tranquility and adaptability.
Looking ahead to 2024, there will also be an increased demand for bespoke and
artisan curtain fabrics. The value of personalisation in home décor will make
these unique and handmade items a prized choice for many. Made to measure
curtains will, no doubt, will be at the top of many homemakers list.
Technology also plays a significant part in shaping curtain fabric trends. Digital
fabric printing will become even more mainstream by 2024, opening up a new
realm of possibilities for customisation, such as photograph-inspired designs and
individual artworks. The ability to have unique and personal designs on curtain
fabric will resonate with homeowners wanting to personalise their spaces.
Moreover, the introduction of smart home systems will influence the curtain
industry. We can expect advancements in smart curtain technology, with fabrics
that react to sunlight and heat and automatically adjust according to daylight
hours.
Lastly, trends may circle back to more opulent styles, rekindling an appreciation
for detailed embellishments such as fringing, trims, and banding. Combined with
luxe materials like velvet or silk, this style provides a luxurious, high-end aesthetic
that could appeal to a niche market seeking that touch of glamour.
In summary, the curtain fabric industry in the UK will witness a variety of trends
in 2024, influenced by broader social, environmental, and technological developments.
Expect to see a movement towards sustainable materials, natural-inspired
designs, textured fabrics, functionality, digital innovation, personalisation,
and perhaps, a hint of opulence.

Trends Forecast
2024 by Warwick
Fabrics
Get creative and
make a statement
in 2024!
W
With a new year, comes fresh, new
trends — and we’re excited!
Introducing the Warwick Fabrics Trend
Forecast, we bring you three distinct
trends for 2024 that offer varying styles
and will bring a sense of familiarity, as
well as a unique touch to any interior.
2024 is the year of getting creative and
trying something different. Whether it’s
a maximalist or minimalist aesthetic,
each of our three trends are bound to
be impactful and make a statement.
We hope these three stylish trends offer
some inspiration and ways to get creative
when it comes to interior design in
2024.
Creative Curation
Take your creativity to the next level
with Creative Curation. Celebrating
unique styles and all things creative,
this trend brings retro geometrics from
different design eras and plush velvets
to create inviting spaces with a vintage
yet modern twist. Fun, exciting and
timeless, Creative Curation welcomes
maximalism with no rules — the possibilities
are endless.
From vintage leathers or vinyls, to rich,
patterned velvets such as Vivaldi and
smooth chenilles such as Atlas, this
trend encourages mixing and matching

39
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
varying finishes to create your own work of art. For a modern yet classic touch,
a houndstooth pattern and bouclé texture will elevate this look, giving elegance
and an on-trend style. To achieve this look, try our range of bouclé fabrics including
Mario, Fabio and Ovis.
Incorporating prints is also a great way to bring personality into your space. Fun
florals such as Zanzibar or Picton paired with exotic animal prints like Nasir or
Kenji will add a rich, tropical flare and eccentric edge while bright geometrics or
stripes with a plush finish like our Lombardi fabric offer a sense of playfulness
and character. Plains such as Theodora with bright and colourful tones also complement
this trend and its patterns for a cohesive look.
Creative Curation’s palette features bold, vibrant hues that are paired with
muted earth bases for balance. When creating this style, consider neutral bases
and layer in a mixture of warm and cool mid tones with pigments of fiery red or
sapphire blue that can be found in our Lustrell Charisma range to create drama
and interest.
Embracing baroque detailing and fantastical toiles, Creative Curation brings
soft touch and modern maximalism for an eclectic style. Designed to mix and
match, this trend works beautifully with coloured glass, checkerboard pattern,
mixed pattern woods, gloss tiles, statement marble, along with furniture pieces
that feature wave, sculpted or round accents, as well as feature edges. Colour
blocking, decorative trims and large hems on sheers also complement this trend
— the more detail, the better!
Future Terrain
Inspired by nature where raw, organic textures meet earthy, botanical hues,
Future Terrain captures the beauty of all things natural. Textural and tactile, this

40
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
trend is bound to create a grounding and nurturing environment with its familiar
and nostalgic feel.
Trickling on from our previous Primitive Trend, Future Terrains celebrates texture
where imperfection is seen as perfection. Featuring refined textures such as
Haven, to chunky finishes seen in Mochilla and Peyton, beautiful floral patterns
like Harlowe, Aruba and Eden also tie into this trend perfectly, capturing a botanic
feel. Sheers similar to Iuta and Cora pair well with this style also for a raw
aesthetic.
Future Terrain’s palette reflects organic materials and natural, botanical hues of
the Earth. From rich browns that represent the soil, to flowery reds and purples
and earthy greens inspired by the forest and vegetation, this trend can be colourful,
but on the softer, more muted side, creating an inviting, nature-inspired
or rural aesthetic.
Future Terrian nurtures and soothes with its raw and soft textures combined
with its earthy colourways, bringing a crafted feel — perfect for a cottage style.
Lush greenery and flowers are encouraged with this style, along with mud brick,
wood grain, mineral patterns, stone accents, raw knotting and sculpted flora. For
furnishings, grounded sofas and pieces with study, stout footing, jaggered edges
and organic shapes complement this all natural, imperfect trend.
Digital Dreamscape
Simple yet captivating, our Digital Dreamscape trend embraces the digital age

41
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
and encourages light and minimalistic qualities
to create a futuristic aesthetic. Calm
and therapeutic in tone and style, experiment
with metallics, crisp whites, ethereal
patterns and soft finishes to bring soothing
moods with a little edge.
Flowing on from our previous Sensescape
trend, Digital Dreamscape welcomes matte
and stone washed finishes like Tesoro, as
well as iridescent and metallics, such as
Mecca. In this trend, patterns are soft, ethereal
like Portico, static or stippled similiar to
Coast, and futuristic with an alluring sheen
that can be found in Nikita. Stripes such
as Bronte and plush plains with a unique,
mottled print found in Felix also complement
this trend, stimulating your touch and visual
senses.
Digital Dreamscape’s palette is almost
fantastical where its colours are calm and
therapeutic. Featuring crisp whites, ice
pinks, chalky neutrals, stone wash clay and
grounding metallic greys. It’s soft yet electric,
creating an aesthetic that is enticing and
energising.
Minimalistic yet captivating, Digital Dreamscape
is bound to create a dreamy interior
with an edgy twist. Reflective surfaces,
iridescent shells, smooth shapes, chrome
finishes, translucent features and playful
light tie perfectly into this trend. For furniture,
carved out seating, smoothed features,
curvy shapes and ripple edges are also
encouraged for a soft, tranquil style.

ing, conjuring up an air of calm, offering us a space to be, feel, and heal and to
flourish from whether spending time with others or taking the
time to enjoy a moment by ourselves,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director,
Pantone Color Insti
tute. “Drawing comfort from PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, we can find peace
from within, impacting our wellbeing. An idea as much as a feeling, PANTONE
13-1023 Peach Fuzz awakens our senses to the comforting presence of tactility
and cocooned warmth.”
Sensitive but sweet and airy, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz
evokes a new modernity. While centered in the human
experience of enriching and nurturing the mind
body and soul, it is also a quietly sophisticated
and contemporary peach with depth whose
gentle lightness is understated but impactul
bringing beauty to the digital world.
Poetic and romantic, a clean peach tone
with a vintage vibe, PANTONE 13-1023
Peach Fuzz reflects the past yet has
been rephrased to have a contemporary
ambiance.
The introduction of PANTONE 13-
1023 Peach Fuzz also marks the 25th
anniversary of the Pantone Color of
the Year program. First introduced by the Pantone Color Institute in 1999 with
the Pantone Color of the Year, PANTONE 15-4020 Cerulean Blue, the Pantone
Color of the Year captures the global zeitgeist, serving as an expression of a
mood and an attitude on the part of the consumer. Through the years, the Pantone
Color of the Year program has become a globally iconic cultural touchstone,
drawing atention to how what is taking place in our global culture is reflected
and expressed through the language of color.
“With this year’s Pantone Color of the Year 2024, we see an increased focus on
community and people across the world reframing how they want to live and
evaluating what is important – that being the
comfort of being close to those we love. The color is one whose
warm and welcoming embrace conveys a message of compassion
and whose cozy sensibility brings people together
and enriches the soul,” added Laurie Pressman, Vice
President of the Pantone Color Institute. “In the spirit
of PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, we reflect back on
the last 25 years of the Pantone Color of the Year
program grateful to provide an avenue where
designers and color enthusiasts all over the world
can engage in a conversation about color, be
inspired by color and showcase their creativity
within their communities. We look forward to
continuing this for many more years to come.”

Power of colors and
sustainability in
design by Milou Ket
GOLD + OCHER
Famous Dutch trend forecaster Milou Ket looks
at the interior design from a wider perspective
and comments on the future trends by blending
all related issues for comforting spaces. Ket
reads the influences better and offers excellent suggestions
for design talents. She says, “A shift in the use of color is
evident. We speak about the power of color. Many companies
are taking their responsibility as to sustainability issues, many
alternative materials are available, derived from natural waste.
Or they recycle. We need to make more conscious choices
in production, consuming and our way of life.” Below is her
presentation for FFF readers:
I
In these times of turmoil that are defined by disruption in the supply chain, war, inflation,
climate, and energy crisis, we have a strong need for optimism. A shift in the use of color is
evident. We speak about the power of color. Many companies are taking their responsibility as
to sustainability issues, many alternative materials are available, derived from natural waste. Or
they recycle. We need to make more conscious choices in production, consuming and our way of
life. In the interior, shapes have become rounder and curvier. Texture and imperfections, tactility,
warmer and earthy colors are important. Rib structures add interest. Sometimes archaic shapes
and primitive materials are used to oppose minimal and clean shapes. There are many whimsical
rugs in phantasy shapes. We see much small furniture for versatility such as hockers.

TEXTURE & IMPERFECTION
The first theme “Texture and Imperfection” has been given a
warmer look. That is not only caused by the colors, but also by
the textures and materials. Especially textiles play an important
role to obtain that warmer effect. Think of curtains, wall
hangings and rugs, and other textiles such as bouclé, chenille,
and other textured effects. Also curves, irregular and rounded
shapes such as circles and arches attribute to this friendlier,
welcoming, and soothing atmosphere. Acoustic products, often
executed in felt, have gained importance.
Carpets show whimsical shapes and opposition in materials and
the height of the tufting. We will see the application of stone,
petrified wood, and composites, often with a rib structure.
Sometimes we see almost archaic primitive shapes in small
furniture, but also in decorative products such as wall art and
vases, often executed in stone, clay or similar materials. Walls
are painted in chalk-like materials for slight irregularities and
imperfection. Furniture should be versatile, to adapt to different
situations. Gold and similar metallics are now accepted in this
timeless style direction. And they add to the warmth.
GRADIENT PASTELS
In the second theme “Gradient Pastels” we have two color
cards: one with chalky pastels, the other with brighter pastels.
This is an uncomplicated style direction where these color ranges
are mixed with each other, and with even brighter and darker
ones. Paint is used as a decorative tool and is executed as color
blocking in planes and circles. We also see this
translated into wallcoverings. The materials are often manmade,
such as glass, resin, polyester, Perspex etc. Gradients and
transparencies play an important role. Also, here curvy, and
rounded shapes show up. Marbled surfaces and spots and stains
together with aquarelle effects are important as prints. We also
see flower prints, as well as geometric patterns. Iridescence also
plays a role. Artificial Intelligence methods of rendering are applied
to present ideas and make it hard to distinguish between
real and fake. The play with light and color is shown in architecture
and products with led’s, to change the atmosphere with

color. Projections serve the same goal. There is also a combination
of matte and shine, of opaque and transparency, hard and soft.
Rib structures and bubbles add interest to the surface of products
and furniture. 3-D printed product belongs now to our daily reality.
These pastels can be used among themselves, but also as an accent
color in the first style direction “Texture & Perfection”.
CROSS-CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS
In the third style direction “Cross-cultural Expressions”, we see examples
from different cultural backgrounds, mixed with more creativity
and freedom than before. A Bohemian interior is the result.
These ethnic handcrafted products are executed mostly in warm
colors, but also in brighter colors for self-expression, as an outburst
of color and texture. However, the influence from Africa, especially
Morocco is still very important. We see that translated into natural
materials and neutral colors such as reed, rattan, wood
etc. for lamps and other decorative products. Especially products
such as braided baskets and bowls, pottery, handmade masks, wall
hangings with tufting and macramé are popular. Fringes, tassels,
beads, and pompoms adorn cushions and throws with embroideries,
tufting and crewel work. Kilims, patchwork ideas and recycled
materials are applied on pillows, throws, but also on hockers.
Masks and pictures of wild animals are popular decoration pieces.
Traditional techniques such as ikat, tie and dye, and shibori are
applied to obtain an one-of product with unique characteristics.
Indigo blue is a classic in
all it’s different appearances. Old authentic weaving techniques are
valued again. Blue Chinese porcelain products combine very well
with these all- blue interiors. Also, Oriental tiles, Suzanna’s, Islamic
and cashmere motives are applied in a colorful mix of opulent
decoration.

66
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
LIGHT EFFECTS
COLOR EXPLOSION
In these uncertain times we need uplifting, optimistic colors as an
antidote. In this styling direction “Color Explosion” we see a range
of bright, vibrant colors. Often, they are applied on transparent
grounds, in that way they are less intense. Or the colors are diluted
when they are applied in water color and marbled prints. The last
years we have seen the influence from Modern Art, but that has
diminished. Sometimes the graphics are still there, but the contrast
is less forceful than in the combination with black and white. Graphic
effects are evident in stripes and checkerboard prints. Another
way to apply these colors is by executing parts of a sofa or chair in
different colors or applying color as a multicolor effect. Glass, Plastic,
Perspex, resin and polyester, gradient prints and transparencies give
a contemporary feel. Here and there the influence from Bauhaus and
the Memphis movement is still visible. The whimsical graphical and
geometric carpets take an important place. They may be hung on the
wall as well. Curves, circles, and geometric patterns are applied in
wallcoverings, as well as in pillows, bedding, curtains, floors, and wall
art. Effects with light and led’s are also in demand. The shapes here
too are more rounded, and less angular. Solar panels can be printed,
we will see lamps that are chargeable by the sun. Small furniture is in
demand.

68
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
DOWN TO EARTH
The fifth styling theme “Down to Earth” is based on increased urgency on solutions
for climate change and sustainability. Inflation and energy crisis give an extra
impulse to explore different resources. Designers are working with recycled
materials, but also with renewable materials such as corn, eucalyptus, banana
leaf, coffee grind etc. Also, algae, pineapple, fungi, bark, milk, and different materials
from for instance food waste are used. Also, vegan leather is an important
product, sometimes derived from fruit waste, and is now commercially available.
Green has become an important color, we surround
ourselves with quiet greens, or more vivid green colors, we have green wallcoverings
with foliage, plants, flora, and fauna. Important are also the colors of
paint for a real atmospheric effect. Romantic landscapes are popular, sometimes
with exotic plantations, with palm tree leaves, or inspired by southern countries
with pine trees. Exotic animals such as jaguars, giraffes, tigers, monkeys, and
birds are beloved subjects. But also, game animals such as pheasants are depicted.
Different dye stuff is used, derived from natural
sources for a more sustainable result. Wood, rattan, stone, and clay are some
examples of the used materials. Vintage and second-hand products are popular.
Imperfections make them even more desirable. Sometimes they are combined
with industrial products for a lived-in look.

6. ABUNDANCE & OPULENCE
The last styling theme is called “Abundance and Opulence”. It
shows an eclectic style, traditional but with luxury and glamour.
Sometimes it may have a Bohemian vibe. The colors are deep and
rich. Velvet and chenille are the favourite textile materials. The
walls and wainscoting are often painted in dark, moody colors.
The interiors are composed of personal objects, antiques, or heirlooms.
Or they may be products from or inspired by the Curiosity
Cabinet, such as stuffed animals, shells, antique statues, or rare
minerals to mention a few. Vintage and Mid-century furniture is
popular. Sometimes golden accents
are added as well as Art-Deco influences, such as metallic patterns
in wallpaper or the application of fringes. Matte textures
are opposed to shiny effects as we can see in materials such
as crystal, glass or metallics. Or velvet is opposed to shiny silk.
Luxurious natural stone materials such as marble, malachite, and
tiger eye are applied for furniture or on walls or are sometimes
imitated in wallcoverings. Tiles with a rich effect make a comeback
in the interior. A more modern result is obtained with aurora
borealis effects, with gradients and the effect of oil spills. The
possibilities of rendering interiors in Artificial Intelligence show
up and blur the borders of real and fake.
Leave a clean
trail with Lima
Green
E
Established in Bursa, Lima Logistics was founded by four partners who are aware
that better service can only be achieved by meeting customer needs in the best
way, and who adopt a flexible and dynamic service approach as a principle. The
meaning of the company’s name is “Goddess of Beginnings”, it was indeed a
brand-new beginning for the founders and for the industry. We conducted an
interview with Cenker Ural, one of the founding partners of Lima to get the hints
led them to their success of being an internationally recognized and respected
brand. Full text of the exclusive interview follows:
With which transportation modes and services do Lima
Logistics stands out in Türkiye and the global market,
which services are the ones most identified with and
bear the signature of Lima Logistics?
Lima provides services in air transport, maritime transport, land transport, intermodal,
minivan, international fast courier and fair modes. We have to emphasize
that the most prominent feature which distinguishes our company from other
logistics companies is to find solutions with alternatives. This comment is not
ours, but our customers’.
Providing information is another characteristics of us which we place emphasis
on. By utilizing the cutting-edge technology to the maximum extent, we share
every step of the load simultaneously with our customers, agents and suppliers.
In brief, instant information is our most prominent feature along with the alternative
transport solutions created by Lima Logistics employees by taking into
account the cost and speed.
However, Lima Logistics
will also make an indeliable
impression in the upcoming
period with “Lima Green”,
which is a “very first” in
Türkiye. As you know,
inherently, the logistics
sector is an industry where
fossil fuels are consumed
extensively and as a result,
its carbon footprint has
reached critical volumes.
For this reason, we also
offer “carbon neutral”
transportation services to
our customers by breaking
a new ground in the sector
in terms of sustainable
logistics. Thanks to the
algorithms adopted and accredited
all over the world,
Cenker Ural / Founding Partner
Lima Green, which takes
into account the departure-destination points, volumetric weight and other parameters,
carbon offsetting is ensured by providing support to climate-friendly
projects in the amount corresponding to the carbon footprint in order to offset
this emission. And the relevant cargo is delivered in an environmentally friendly
way. Although “carbon-neutral” transportation is a “choice” in many parts of the
world for now, it is inevitable that it will become a “requirement” in the near
future. We are also proud to have started the sustainability journey in the sector
with Lima Green, which received the ’Sustainable Logistics of the Year’ Award
at the 8th Economy and Logistics Summit with the participation support of the
Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Trade, Sectoral Unions
and Associations.
How was Lima Logistics’ performance in 2023 and what
are your goals and investment plans for year 2024?
It can be asserted that the first half of 2023 was quite good both for the sector
and for our company. We have accomplished to reach our target in May 2023.
When we compare 2022 and 2023, 2023 reveals an increase of 29%. With the
increase in our number of intermodal and minivans and new personnel investments
to be made in our Istanbul office, we anticipate a 32% increase in our
2024.
Last but not least, what would you like to add?
First of all, we think that the economic fluctuation in the world and in our country
will become controllable in the mid-2024 and as a consequence the mobility
in our sector will increase in 2024 and beyond.
We maintain focusing on our personnel and volume in minivan transportation.
We have further expanded our investments thereaway.
Finally, I can express that, for 2024, we have new investment plans and surprises
that we are very excited about.

2024 Home Design Trend:
Why Curtains are Replacing
Doors and How to Embrace It
Interior design trends come and go, but some truly revolutionize how we
perceive spaces. As we prepare to step into 2024, curtains are taking
the spotlight, replacing traditional doors in more places than just our
living spaces. This versatile solution is gaining traction for pantries,
cupboards, wardrobes, and even office spaces.
B
But why opt for curtains over doors?
• Adaptability: Whether you’re crafting a distraction-free office nook or seeking
easy access to your pantry, curtains seamlessly fit the bill.
• Space-saving: Curtains do away with the door swing, streamlining room management.
• Aesthetic Fluidity: Particularly in open-plan homes, curtains ensure a unified
look while effectively demarcating spaces.
Crafting a Home Office
The aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered our lifestyles,
with a prominent shift to working from home. This change underscored the
need for dedicated, functional spaces within our homes. Using curtains as room

Furnishing Fabric Fashion
dividers creates a tangible boundary between work and leisure areas, ensuring
privacy for focused tasks and virtual meetings.
A Boutique-Style Wardrobe
Maximize room space and enhance aesthetics by choosing curtains over traditional
wardrobe doors. Opt for thicker fabrics to ensure privacy. For those with
walk-in closets, curtains at the entrance can impart a boutique-style flair.
Pantries and Cupboards
In tighter spaces or smaller kitchen layouts, substituting traditional pantry or
cupboard doors with light-colored, semi-transparent curtains can amplify the
perception of space. This design also facilitates a quick overview of your pantry’s
contents, even with the curtain closed. For kitchen cupboards, moisture-resistant
fabrics are a prudent choice for longevity.
Choosing the Right Hardware
Heavy fabrics, like velvet, can emulate the solidity of a door, offering unparalleled
privacy. It’s essential to select strong, heavy-duty curtain clips to ensure
these materials stay securely in place. For those who value tranquility, silent
curtain rings offer a hushed glide each time the curtain is maneuvered. And if
you’re chasing an ultra-sleek look, tracked curtain poles are the way to go. These
systems ensure smooth curtain movement, presenting a tidy appearance while
retaining the classic curtain pole ambiance.
Final Thoughts
2024 is shaping up to be a year of re-envisioning traditional spaces. Curtains,
now more than ever, are not just decorative elements but pivotal tools for space
optimization. As they ascend to prominence, they promise both aesthetic charm
and heightened functionality.

Natural Ingredients
• Colors and Patterns
• Minimalism
• Different Styles
Natural Ingredients
2024 will be a year of increasing popularity for natural
fabric curtains. The theme of sustainability and return
to nature is also reflected in the choice of curtains.
While natural materials generate a warm and peaceful
atmosphere in homes, they also offer an environmentally
friendly option. Especially curtains made of natural
fabrics such as cotton and linen provide an elegant and comfortable ambiance.
Color and Pattern Richness
Colors and patterns show themselves in 2024 curtain models. Full and saturated colors make the living
rooms lively and energetic. Color options such as brown, green or rich blue bring different tones and
energies to the living rooms. In addition, patternless and plain colored curtains add a modern and simple
touch to the decoration.
Minimalist Approaches
The minimalist curtain trend combines simplicity and elegance. Designed without bulky prints or details,
these curtains give rooms a spacious and calm feel. Monochrome curtains in light tones make rooms look
brighter and more spacious, perfect for those who like timeless and elegant decorations.
Different Patterns
The texture mix trend emphasizes diversity and aesthetics in curtains. By combining different types of
fabrics, you can achieve a modern and interesting look. Curtains made of different fabrics such as velvet
and tulle offer a rich and sophisticated ambiance.

Future interior
trends and
innovations at imm
cologne
F
From 14.01 - to 18.01.2024, the imm cologne will once herald the new interior design year and set
the trends of tomorrow. With a clear focus on business, inspiration and networking, the fair offers the
international interior world a unique platform and the central access point to the European furnishing
market. The imm cologne represents the entire spectrum of products and services of the industry -
from innovative furnishing solutions from up-and-coming start-ups to the high-end designs of established
market leaders.
At the start of the new year, Germany’s largest Interior Business Event will present the trends for the
season ahead and is once again poised to be the key meeting place for the international furnishings
scene. With its central theme of Connecting Communities, the trade fair is inviting visitors to come
and discover the new collections and product innovations, to exchange ideas, discuss trends, make
new contacts and maintain existing relationships.
imm cologne will return to its usual, long-established date in the calendar. With new, innovative
formats, the trade fair aims to focus even more strongly on the rich variety of lifestyles and interiors.
Trade fair participants can expect a wide range of newly developed content and event platforms in line
with the concept of “The Circles”. Matthias Pollmann, Koelnmesse’s Vice President Trade Fair Man-

agement, explains: “Among other things, these central meeting points will showcase innovations in home
living and demonstrate how the boundaries between art and design are blurring. With its international
exhibitors and the new event format ‘The Circles’, Cologne’s Interior Business Event will once again be a
hotspot for new home furnishing trends.”
Flexibility redefined
imm cologne 2024 is set to highlight a sea change in living styles with traditional boundaries between living
areas disappearing and homes being transformed into versatile spaces that function not only as places
to live but also as places to work. Bathrooms are being reimagined as private spas, kitchens are evolving
into indoor gardens, and gardens are becoming extended “green living rooms”. A host of exhibitors will
be presenting innovative solutions, including multifunctional furniture for both living spaces and working
spaces, weatherproof sofas for indoor and outdoor use, and flexible, modular furnishing concepts suitable
for all manner of spaces and budgets.
Sustainable aesthetics
Sustainable living continues to be a central theme at imm cologne. The interior design industry is putting
greater focus on product cycles in order to optimize the use and lifespan of furniture. “Circular-ready”
tables, chairs and sofas made from repurposed offcuts or bio-based materials are being launched on the
market in increasing numbers. Environmental certificates are helping consumers to choose sustainable
furniture and take into account environmental considerations as well as factors like healthy living spaces.

84
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
Inspiration from the natural world
Topics like sustainability, recyclability and durability aren’t only affecting how people choose
furniture, they’re also influencing its color and shape. Natural shades such as algae or earth
tones are currently on trend. Integrating natural or nature-inspired materials and making
generous use of green plants lends interiors a refreshing natural atmosphere. This approach
is rounded off by soft, organically inspired shapes in the design of furniture.
Sheer comfort and security
In times of uncertainty, the desire for a safe and cozy refuge from the world intensifies. Calm
design and surfaces that are pleasant to touch help to create a relaxed living environment.

The current interiors trend favors fabrics, patterns and
textures that appeal to the senses as well as materials like
wood, leather and natural stone, which are being used
more and more in furniture finishes. This design approach
creates spaces that radiate warmth and feelings of grounding
and connection.
Back to basics
Contemporary attitudes to life are translating into a desire
for simplicity, which is reflected in the trend towards more
minimalist furnishings. The principle of omission by design
is increasingly being applied to new furniture. Thanks to
their compact dimensions and simple shapes, graceful and
minimalist chairs, tables and sofas suit any space. Minimalist
design stands for timeless elegance as well as restraint.
One positive side effect of this approach is that it saves
resources without compromising on quality.
Colorful living spaces
In contrast to understated minimalism and natural-looking
earth tones, bold colors are expected to set a countertrend
at imm cologne 2024. The idea is to welcome a cheerful
and lively ambience into the home. Colors like red, yellow
and green are a deliberate departure from the muted color
palette of many new interior design collections. Armchairs
and sofas in eye-catching shades are particularly striking
85
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
and create individual highlights.
This joyful design trend is permeating
all areas of the home, spreading
a positive atmosphere.
Interior design enthusiasts will
have the opportunity to discover
these trends and more in Cologne
this coming January. imm cologne
2024 marks a milestone in the
event’s continuing journey towards
a reinvented trade fair. As well as
offering insights into new products
and innovations in the world
of interior design, imm cologne
2024 will provide an updated trade
fair experience that reflects the
industry’s latest developments and
needs.

Heimtextil 2024: Textile innovations for
new challenges in architecture, interior
design and hospitality
Between New Work, Healing Hospital, Outdoor Spaces and Sustainability:
What are the key challenges in contract design and what do future-proof textile
solutions look like? Heimtextil will provide answers to these questions from 9 to
12 January 2024 with its Interior.Architecture.Hospitality program. The proven
format will now be even more extensive and international. In addition to the
numerous high-profile TALKS & TOURS, the LIBRARY is one of the central tools
for experts from the fields of architecture, interior design and hospitality.
Frankfurt am Main – 2024, the curated Interior.Architecture.Hospitality LIBRARY
presents innovative functional textiles from selected exhibitors, including Edmund
Bell, Futura Leathers, Marburger Tapetenfabrik, Proneem, Textaafoam or
Vanelli Tekstil. The material library focuses on the following properties: flame-retardant,
sound-absorbing, lightfast, antimicrobial, dirt-repellent and scrub-resistant.
A large number of companies presented their products to the renowned
expert jury, which includes Gerhard Sperling (German Home Textile Industry
association), Jasmin Grego (GREGO Jasmin Grego & Stephanie Kühnle Architektur)
and Felix Diener (Marburger Tapetenfabrik).
Function meets innovation meets design: the jury members agreed on the
remarkably high quality of the submissions: “As the challenges in architecture
increase, so do the demands on textile solutions. This makes it all the more
important to me that the innovations from Heimtextil exhibitors continue to

inspire me, reports Jasmin Grego from the jury meeting, which took place in
Frankfurt am Main at the end of November 2023. Her jury colleague Gerhard
Sperling adds: “The technological developments of functional textiles have
taken on an impressive dynamic in recent years, which the submissions for the
Interior.Architecture.Hospitality LIBRARY 2024 have once again confirmed. It
was not easy for us to make a selection, but in the end, we were able to present
a result that really reflects the new state of the art for functional textiles.”
Felix Diener emphasizes the special added value of the LIBRARY for Heimtextil
visitors: “I generally welcome the fact that this material library is also available
online. But in order to be able to judge the design quality, especially in terms
of haptics, structures or designs, it is essential to experience textiles live. The
LIBRARY is also irreplaceable for this.” On the boulevard in hall 4.0, the curated
material library presents pioneering functional textiles for the contract business.
In the LIBRARY TOURS, the three jury members will personally guide through
their selection.
Knowledge formats reflect the future
The Interior.Architecture.Hospitality formats at Heimtextil focus explicitly on the
special needs of the contract sector. “We are observing two strong trends that
are leading to an increased need for information and networking in the contract
sector: On the one hand, the requirements for the design of hotels, public
buildings, care facilities, restaurants or offices are increasing in terms of sustainability
and legal requirements are also playing an increasing role in the selection
of suitable textiles. On the other hand, modern textiles are becoming more
and more efficient and are therefore also taking on new key functions such as
sound insulation, fire protection and hygiene. Both developments are reflected
in our Interior.Architecture.Hospitality program”, says Bettina Bär, Show Director
Heimtextil. The program includes customized knowledge and networking formats,
for which Messe Frankfurt has been able to attract numerous renowned
thought leaders. In 2024, the program will be expanded and become even more
Kinds of
natural fabrics
T
There are innumerable types of fabrics made from natural and synthetic fibers.
Natural fibers are obtained from nature such as animal coats, plant seeds, stems
and leaves, and silkworm cocoons while synthetic ones are man-made fibers
developed by chemical processes. Some of the latter are manufactured as a
response to the weaknesses of the former
LINEN
Linen is the oldest fabric known to man. Linen is a cloth derived from the fiber
of flax. It is primarily used for home furnishings and décor. It is expensive as
it has exceptional qualities and characteristics. Linen is hypo-allergenic and
protects against sun radiation. It has been used for over 10,000 years and is
luxurious and comfortable. Linen is one of the strongest fabrics but it creases
very badly which is something to consider when using it around your interiors
though it is best suited for formal living rooms or adult areas because it soils and
wrinkles easily. And, it won’t withstand heavy wear. However, linen does resist
pilling and fading. Soiled linen upholstery must be professionally cleaned to
avoid shrinkage.
Leather: Leather is a natural fabric with interesting natural textures. In terms
of decorating and design, leather is often reserved for upholstery. A leather
recliner or couch are sophisticated touches to add to any room. Leather is very
elastic and soft but it is also extremely firm. This tough material can be gently
vacuumed, damp-wiped as needed, and cleaned with leather conditioner or
saddle soap.

99
COTTON
Cotton fabric is made from the fiber of plant. The fiber grows around the seeds of the cotton plant and
cotton has been used since about 3000 BC. It is soft, strong, flame retardant, hypo-allergenic and easy
to wash. Cotton is probably the most commonly used fabric in the world. It can be produced more
cheaply than a lot of fabrics. It is one of the most versatile fabrics offering an extensive range
of weights, textures and patterns. Cotton can be dyed easily and responds well to printed
pattern. Cotton drapes attractively and although it is not a luxurious fabric it is resilient,
practical and easy to sew, giving widespread appeal.
Cotton natural fiber provides good resistance to wear, fading, and pilling. It is less
resistant to soil, wrinkling, and fire. Surface treatments and blending with other
fibers often atone for these weaknesses.
100
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
WOOL
Wool came from the soft
curly hair taken from a live sheep. Wool
is extremely durable and resists wrinkles. It has some great
qualities and it can be used in a variety of ways around the living spaces adding
richness and texture. Being sturdy and durable, wool and wool blends offer
good resistance to pilling, fading, wrinkling, and soil. Generally, wool is blended
with a synthetic fiber to make it easier to clean and to reduce the possibility of
felting the fibers.
Vinyl: Vinyl (polyvinyl chloride or PVC), is the world’s most versatile plastic, used
to make everything from food wrap to auto body parts. Vinyl is a prominent
coated fabric in the textile industry. Vinyl fabrics are used for furniture upholstery,
transportation seating, wall coverings, etc. Easy-care and less expensive
than leather, vinyl fabrics are ideal for busy living spaces. Its durability depends
on its quality.
SILK
Silk is considered the strongest fabric made from natural fibers produced by
silkworms. It is an elegant fiber. This delicate fabric is only suitable for adult
areas, such as formal living rooms. It must be professionally cleaned if soiled.

It is beautiful, luxurious and expensive. Silk is not the most practical fabric for
home furnishings despite being one of the strongest natural fibers. It is terribly
affected from sun damage and does not work well when being stretched or taut.
When used for curtains it drapes and hangs beautifully with fluid folds, looking
stunning, however, if the curtains are hung in line of direct sunlight, the silk will
be damaged.
HEMP
Hemp is a natural fabric seen in décor, shoes, and clothing. The fabric is extremely
water-resistant and able to withstand harsh conditions for extended periods
of time. It can be used for many things from work clothing to home decoration
such as table linens, dish towels and sheets. It has a great luster and dyes easily.
101
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
JUTE
It is economical and strong, reusable and repairable. It is a good insulator of
electricity and heat. Jute is reserved for carpet, rugs and floors. The woven natural
fabric is extremely durable although it can be difficult to clean and maintain.

Enas’ goal is to be at
5 thousand points
Enas, which has been
producing in the home
textile industry for many
years and currently
exports products to 60
countries, will export to
5,000 points in 4 years.
K
Köseoğlu family, which has 35 years of experience in the sector, first introduced
Elizabeth and then Enas brands to the sector. Underlining that single
tulle curtains will be a trend in 2024, Enas Chairman Hadi Köseoğlu stated
that sufficient fair areas should be brought to Istanbul as soon as possible.
Köseoğlu said that air cargo transportation should be developed urgently for
exporting companies and gave information about their plans for the future.
How was the Enas brand established? Could you tell
us about the work you have done since your establishment?
We entered the curtain and home textile business in 1989. We traded entirely
in suitcases until 1998. Then we returned to normal exports. Meanwhile, we
established Elizabeth under the Köseoğlu Company. We continue to serve
with our Enas brand since 2019.
What kind of products do you have? What are the
features of these products?
In addition to tulle and thick curtain fabrics, we also have roller and zebra curtains.
We also export upholstery fabric and carpets. Apart from this, we make
wholesale sales to nearly 60 countries. We do their R&D and design work ourselves.
We have products with features such as fireproof, recyclable, stain and
water repellent. Thanks to our 18 years of production history and experience,
we can easily respond to every request. Decorative single tulle products will
be trending in 2024. These can be used both as tulle and as curtains. We had
already made the necessary investments regarding these products in 2023.
Which countries and regions do you export to?
We export 90% of our products to 500 points and 60 countries. We can count
the Middle East, Europe, South America, Asia, and Russia and Eastern bloc

countries as regions. These
export efforts have been
continuing since approximately
1990. Because we
think continuity in exports
is important.
What are the goals
of the Enas brand
for 2024 and beyond?
In 2024, we will double our
exports from 500 points to
1,000. We aim to increase
this number by 10 times
and reach 5,000 points in
the next 4 years. This is not
difficult to do. There is a
large market. We believe
that we can make these
plans on the date we want.
What do you think
should be done to increase exports
in this sector?
We have approximately 35 years of experience
in the industry. The biggest shortcomings in Turkey
are the inadequacy of fairgrounds and the
underdevelopment of air cargo transportation.
The sales area of the exhibition center where
the Hometex fair is held is 60,000 m2. We have
brands with only 200-300 thousand m2 production
area. That’s why we need an exhibition
center with an area of at least 250,000 m2.
103
Furnishing Fabric Fashion
Apart from this, as exporters, we cannot send
products abroad quickly. We are late in this
regard and we need to improve as soon as
possible. In order for Turkey to export massively
too many parts of the world, air transportation
needs to develop. Because we are competing
with large manufacturers such as China, India,
Egypt, Iran and Pakistan. Europe has turned to
B2B work, especially after it started to abandon
production, and they use air transportation
effectively while doing this work. We must solve
this problem very quickly. This is the most important
way to strengthen exporters.

Upholstery fabrics
furnish best!
Fabrics are the most important
elements in interior
design. They are in fact,
among of the core elements
of interior design
because they shape the
major elements such as
furniture, curtains, bedding,
etc. It is the face of
the interiors.
B
Britannica explains “upholstery” as materials used in the craft of covering,
padding, and stuffing seating and bedding. The earliest upholsterers, from
early Egyptian times to the beginning of the Renaissance, nailed animal skins
or dressed leather across a rigid framework. They slowly developed the craft to
include cushions, padding, and pillows—stuffed with such materials as goose
down and horsehair.
Over the years, a wide variety of materials have been used, from hay to horsehair
to wool. Modern upholstered items use metal springs and foam for greater
durability. While the interior materials may not be visible, they make a big
difference in whether the piece is comfortable. And though fabric can always

be changed—and may need to be, depending on wear and tear—choosing
high-quality inner layers will help the piece will last for years to come.
The fabric of an upholstered piece is the most visible sign of quality and style.
Upholstery fabric also is the part most likely to show wear and soil. When choosing
upholstery, you should be aware of its durability, cleanability, and resistance
to soil and fading. How will your upholstered pieces be used in your home?
Sofas, chairs, and ottomans receiving only moderate amounts of wear will do
fine with a less durable fabric.
However, pieces subjected to daily heavy wear need to be covered in tough,
durable, tightly woven fabrics.
When it comes to decorating or re-decorating a room in a living place, the first
thing people usually think of is furniture because it’s the furniture that usually
attracts the most attention and largely contributes to the final result.
But you should also bear in mind other aspects like fabrics and textiles. These
are no minor issues because a good choice of detailing ensures that your interior
will turn into a great interior decoration.
What you have to do is take into consideration the characteristics of the space
you are working on because textiles can enhance the surroundings and disguise
any possible shortcomings. So, you should be careful about choosing your colours
and textures.
While choosing the fabric for any element, one should keep functionality in
mind. The hospitality sector areas such as hotels, restaurants, hospitals, etc. require
fabric that is reusable yet sturdy. Silk can’t be used as covers for furniture
such as sofa, chairs, etc. Similarly, one can’t use acrylic curtains. While at this,
one should also keep in mind the possibility of damage the fabric might have to
endure, such as tearing, wearing out due to excessive use, etc. When purchasing
upholstery fabric or upholstered furniture, be aware that the higher the thread
count, the more tightly woven the fabric is, and the better it will wear. Thread
count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Things that may
ruin the fabric like presence of children and pets should also be thought of.

A Brief Guide to
Furniture Upholstery
Fabrics

tThe type of furniture upholstery fabric you choose does not just determine how
it will look and feel, but also how much care it will require, how it will wear over
the years, and the type of cleaning methods you will have to use. Put simply, the
type of upholstery fabric is a major factor when you reupholster an old chair,
buy a new sofa, or get your king-size bed upholstered by upholstery specialists
as per your custom requirements. This guide on furniture upholstery fabrics will
help you make an informed decision.
Check a Fabric for Durability
It’s possible that a fabric that looks aesthetically pleasing and appears to blend
well with your room’s décor will wear out too soon. So, it is advisable to ask if
the upholstery fabric under consideration is meant for light, medium, or heavy
use. Blended fabrics are generally stronger than their natural counterparts.
Therefore, cotton can be a great choice for sofa cushions and pillows. For a
family couch, however, an engineered fabric that contains cotton, polyester,
and rayon fibers is a much durable alternative. In there are kids and pets in your
household, you may want to upholster chairs, sofa, etc. with viscose, microfiber
fabric, etc.
If you are looking for a durable fabric that looks luxurious as well, chenille can
be a great option. Avoid printed or heavily textured patterns for upholstered
furniture meant to be used in your living room. Such fabrics can wear out in tiny
patches upon heavy-use. Fabrics with woven patterns, on the other hand, are
likely to withstand heavy-use for a longer duration of time.
Pick the Right Fabric
Choosing colors and patterns before narrowing down on the right type of fabric
is a classic mistake people make when buying upholstery fabrics. You can pick
natural or man-made fibers for an upholstery project. Plant-based natural fibers
such as cotton and linen are derived from plants. High-quality cotton or linen
fabric can be as luxurious and costly as silk. Low-grade cotton or linen fabric
(with shorter fiber length), on the other hand, will look somewhat fuzzy. Cotton
is a strong fabric but doesn’t offer much resistance against stretching or wrinkling.
Linen, too, wrinkles quite easily. Cotton blended with other fabrics is a
better option than plain-cotton, when it comes to selecting furniture upholstery
fabric. Linen isn’t considered a good upholstery fabric as it can’t withstand humidity
and can develop mold and mildew.

Protein or animal-based natural fibers such as
silk and wool are generally more expensive.
Both of these upholstery fabrics are generally
blended with other fabrics to lower the cost.
You can opt for reeled silk (shiny and smooth)
or spun silk (textured). It can last a long time
but you will need to keep your upholstery
away from direct sunlight. Wool is resistant
to wrinkling. It can also withstand sunlight,
abrasion, and mildew but needs to be guarded
against insects.
Man-made or synthetic fibers such as microfibers
are quite popular. Most upholstered furniture
items you see at local furniture stores use
these fabrics.
There is no dearth of options in colors, patterns,
and textures when you are shopping for synthetic
fabrics. Synthetic upholstery fabrics are not
only cheaper in comparison to natural upholstery
fabrics but can also withstand wear and tear
more effectively.
Some of the popular synthetic upholstery fabrics
include acetate, acrylic, nylon, olefin, polyester,
and microfiber. Acetate fibers are easy to clean
and resistant to wrinkling, shrinkage, mildew, etc.
Acrylics are a great choice if you want to place
an upholstered furniture item in outdoor
living spaces. They
are easy to

clean and resistant to fading, mildew, insects, and sunlight.
Nylon is highly durable, easy to clean, and quite resistant to
wrinkling, abrasion, mildew, and insects.
Olefin can resist mildew, abrasion, and chemicals but can get
damaged due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Polyester is
a strong and durable fabric; it is resistant to mildew, sunlight,
and insects but can experience soiling and pilling. Microfiber
– a combination of polyester and polyamide – is resistant to
soiling and wrinkling.
Choosing the Right Fabric Color
Do you like dramatic colors or subtle hues more? What kind of
ambiance do you want to create in a living space? Upholstery
fabric color can enhance a room’s aesthetic appeal in more ways
you can possibly imagine right now. Vintage furniture upholstered
with fabrics in new age colors, for instance, will create a unique,
urban vibe in a room. Large furniture items upholstered with
fabrics in light hues will make a small room look more spacious.
Solid hues work well when you want to complement different colors
and patterns in upholstery, cushions, pillows, mats, rugs, etc. as they
can be blended with various accents. Avoid delicate colors if you have
children and pets at home. Remember, upholstered furniture needs to
be cared for if you want it to last several years without significant wearand-tear.
Avoid picking upholstery fabrics in colors that are popular
today but might soon be replaced with new trends. You don’t want to be
reupholstering your furniture too soon.
