Technology that doubles the pleasure of
connecting to life

As technology develops day by day, choosing a hearing aid becomes
increasingly difficult. Now, as in every field, creative and different
products are preferred. As technology develops, new differences emerge
in this field. In fact, within the scope of audio hearing aids, devices that
offer the pleasure of connecting to life without the need for any additional
devices have become available. Users of all ages can enjoy making
phone calls and listening to music, even if they don’t have a compatible
smartphone or tablet. Not only that, it includes dual microphones that
work to filter out environmental noise at the same time. Thus, it allows
users to understand speech better and hear it comfortably, especially
in situations where noise is high. Of course, when buying a hearing
aid, we need to examine not only its technological context but also its
different features. So what should we pay attention to when buying a
hearing aid? If you think, appearance comes first. Its appearance should
be stylish so that the user can feel comfortable and aesthetic concerns
are eliminated. Secondly, as in every field, quality is important; so using
devices without quality certification may not yield effective results.
This month, we covered important topics about high-level hearing
experience and robotic arthroplasty in our magazine. I wish you to be

Hayata bağlanmanın keyfini ikiye
katlayan teknoloji
Teknoloji her geçen gün geliştikçe işitme cihazı seçimi de giderek
zorlaşıyor. Artık her alanda olduğu gibi kreatif ve farklı ürünler tercih
ediliyor. Teknoloji geliştikçe bu alanda yeni farklılıklar ortaya çıkıyor.
Hatta artık ses işitme cihazları kapsamında hiçbir ek cihaza ihtiyaç
duymadan hayata bağlanmanın keyfini sunan cihazlar da mevcut hale
geldi. Her yaştan kullanıcı, uyumlu bir akıllı telefon veya tablete sahip
olmasa bile telefon görüşmesi yapmanın ve müzik dinlemenin keyfini
çıkarabilir. Sadece bununla bitmiyor, aynı anda çevresel gürültüyü
filtrelemek için çalışan çift mikrofon içeriyor. Böylece kullanıcıların
özellikle gürültünün yüksek olduğu durumlarda konuşmayı daha iyi
anlamalarını ve rahat duymalarını sağlıyor. Elbette işitme cihazı alırken
sadece teknolojik bağlamını değil, farklı özelliklerini de incelememiz
gerekiyor. Peki işitme cihazı alırken nelere dikkat etmeliyiz? diye
düşünüyorsanız, görünüm her şeyden önce gelir. Kullanıcının kendisini

görünümü şık olmalıdır. İkincisi, her alanda olduğu gibi kalite önemlidir;
Kalite belgesi olmayan cihazların kullanılması etkili sonuç vermeyebilir.
Bu ay dergimizde üst düzey işitme deneyimi ve robot yardımlı kalça

Cochlear, which does not slow down in R&D and
innovation, aims to offer a high-level hearing
experience to its users with the Nucleus ® 8 and
Nucleus 7 SE sound processors it has introduced
to the market.
Cochlear continues its investments without slowing down,
helping people of all ages to hear and benefit from life’s
opportunities by offering more than six hundred thousand
implantable devices. The company, which recently launched
the Nucleus ® 8 and Nucleus ® 7 SE sound processors in the
second half of the year, is preparing to take the hearing
experience to the next level with two new processors. Gül
Erden, General Manager of Cochlear Türkiye, who said that
they continue their R&D studies with the aim of pushing the
limits of technology, delivered the following statements,

goal and mission, we recently launched two new products.

The Nucleus ® 8 Sound Processor was developed to make

technology to date, the Nucleus ® 8 Sound Processor with
SmartSound ® iQ 2 automatically adapts to the users’

can have the best hearing experience. ForwardFocus
technology, on the other hand, strongly reduces unwanted

features. With Bluetooth LE Audio technology, it offers

No violence!
Şiddete hayır!
Not a day goes by that we don’t hear about violence against
healthcare workers. Our healthcare professionals are subjected
to physical or verbal violence, especially by patient relatives
and sometimes even by patients. Unfortunately, this sad
situation cannot be prevented. I think the measures are
insufficient and the penalties are not deterrent. It is absolutely
not something that our healthcare workers, who play a very
important role in protecting and improving human health,
should be subjected to violence. We are against all forms of
violence. We condemn violence against healthcare workers,
regardless of the reason. We no longer want to hear news of
violence against our healthcare professionals in our country.
We expect the authorities to take action as soon as possible
to impose severe penalties on those who commit violence
against our healthcare workers and those who want to do so.
Our healthcare professionals are the most respected people in
society. We must show them more than they deserve.
Sağlık çalışanlarına yönelik şiddeti duymadığımız bir gün
geçmiyor. Sağlık çalışanlarımıza özellikle hasta yakınları
ve hatta bazen hastalar tarafından fiziksel veya sözlü
şiddet uygulanmaktadır. Ne yazık ki bu üzücü durumun
önüne geçilemiyor. Tedbirlerin yetersiz olduğunu,
cezaların caydırıcı olmadığını düşünüyorum. İnsan
sağlığının korunmasında ve geliştirilmesinde çok önemli
bir rol oynayan sağlık çalışanlarımızın şiddete maruz
kalması kesinlikle hak ettiği bir şey değildir. Şiddetin
her türlüsüne karşıyız. Sebebi ne olursa olsun sağlık
çalışanlarına yönelik şiddeti kınıyoruz. Artık ülkemizde
sağlık çalışanlarımıza yönelik şiddet haberlerini duymak
istemiyoruz. Sağlık çalışanlarımıza şiddet uygulayanlara
ve bunu yapmak isteyenlere ağır cezalar verilmesi için
yetkililerin bir an önce harekete geçmesini bekliyoruz.
Sağlık çalışanlarımız toplumun en saygın insanlarıdır.
Onlara hak ettikleri değerin fazlasını göstermeliyiz.

Associate Professor Dr. Ayşe Pelin Yiğider from
Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital ENT Department, Yeni
Yüzyıl University, told what should be known
about ear cancer.
What is ear cancer? What is the treatment
process like?
“Ear cancer is a kind of cancer originating from the ear skin,
skin appendages, cartilage, muscles and bones. Cancers
originating from the inner ear structures and mostly
occurring as intracranial tumors are also ear cancers. With
the direct spread of cancer cells of the tissues around the
ear to the ear and related tissues, we may encounter cancer
in the ear region.”
What are the causes of ear cancer?
“The presence of genetic disorders that predispose to the
development of cancer in general is a cause in itself. Also,
cancers of the skin and appendages of the ear area are
generally caused by sunlight exposure.”
Yeni Yüzyıl Üniversitesi Gaziosmanpaşa Hastanesi
KBB Bölümü’nden Doç. Dr. Ayşe Pelin Yiğider,
kulak kanseri hakkında bilinmesi gerekenleri
anlattı.
Kulak kanseri nedir? tedavi süreci nasıldır?
“Kulak kanseri; kulak deri, deri ekleri, kıkırdak, kas
ve kemiklerinden kaynaklanan bir kanserdir. İç kulak
yapılarından kaynaklanan ve daha çok kafa içi tümörler
olarak karşımıza çıkan kanserler de kulak kanserleridir.
Kulak çevresi dokuların kanser hücrelerinin kulak ve ilişkili
dokulara direkt yayılımı ile de kulak bölgesinde kanser ile
karşılaşabiliriz.”
Kulak kanserinin nedenleri nelerdir?
“Genel olarak kanser gelişimine yatkınlık sağlayan genetik
bozuklukların varlığı başlı başına bir nedendir. Ayrıca, kulak
bölgesi deri ve eklerinin kanserleri genel olarak güneş ışığı
maruziyetinden kaynaklanır.”

symptoms of ear cancer?
“Patients may apply with visible
wounds or permanent stains, as
well as with pain radiating to the
ear and jaw area. Apart from this,
conditions such as hearing loss,
loss of balance, facial paralysis,
headache, a different swelling
or pain in and around the ear are
important findings.”
How is ear cancer diagnosed?
“First of all, we should not
ignore the complaints we
have experienced and should
be examined by a physician
immediately. Afterwards, ear
cancer can be diagnosed with various tests, tomography,
magnetic resonance imaging, biopsy, etc., at the request of
the physician.”
How can ear cancer be treated?
“The primary treatment for ear cancer is surgery. After
providing a complete cleaning with surgery, additional
chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be required
depending on the pathological characteristics of the tissue.
One of the most important steps of surgical applications
is to compensate for the tissue loss that occurs while the
tumor is being cleaned, both aesthetically and functionally,
and in order to protect vital structures such as the brain
and neck vessels. At this point, the wound opening is closed
with tissues brought from other parts of the body with

“One of the most important causes of ear cancer is
exposure to the sun. For this reason, in order to prevent
ear cancer, it is necessary to avoid sunlight if possible, to

ears to protect them from the sun if we are in a situation

The medical technology market is in worldwide motion and
the signs ahead of MEDICA 2023 and COMPAMED 2023 in
Düsseldorf as the internationally leading trade fairs for the
medical technology industry and related suppliers (trade

From increased out-patient treatment to AI to
sustainability
Visitors from all sectors of the health business have ample
subjects for discussion, based on the defining trends which
currently characterise the market and its dynamics. One
example is the growing “out-patientisation” of care. This

“point-of-care”, that is on patient-oriented diagnostics and
treatment, but also on telemedical applications for optimal,

Excessive use of antibiotics and obesity invite
serious diseases in Türkiye. Researcher and
Author Haydar Yılmaz said that in order to reduce
obesity and antibiotic use in Türkiye, probiotics in
the intestines should increase.
Türkiye ranks first among the EU countries in obesity and
the first in the world in the rate of antibiotic use. Obesity
and excessive use of antibiotics cause serious ailments that
are difficult to repair in the body. Experts state that overuse
of antibiotics can also cause problems such as difficulty in
breathing, rapid heartbeat, loss of consciousness, sudden
drop in blood pressure and shedding of the skin, since some
individuals may develop antibiotic allergy.
Researcher and Author Haydar Yılmaz stated that in
order to reduce obesity and antibiotic use in Türkiye, an
increase in probiotics in the intestines is needed, adding,
“Akkermansia muciniphila and other probiotic bacteria
need people living in Türkiye more than other countries.
The probiotic bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila, which
was discovered in 2004 and passed from breast milk to the
intestines of babies, is stated to be the only bacteria in the
world that provides a intestinal barrier among the most
researched and discovered bacteria in the scientific world
as a new generation probiotic. Akkermansia, which can
live in human intestines without oxygen, is described as a
founding, leading and general bacterium.”

Akkermansia, bağırsak bariyeri oluşturuyor
Uzmanların araştırmalarında bağırsak geçirgenliğinin
bütün hastalıkların ana kaynağı olduğunu hatırlatan Yılmaz,
“Bağırsak mukoza hücrelerini kendilerini yenilemediğinde
ve dokular arasında aralıklar açıldığında tüm zararlı,
zehirli, toksik maddeler, ağır metaller doğrudan kana
karışarak organlara ve dokulara gidiyor. Akkermansia hem
bağırsak mukozasının yenileyerek kalınlığının artmasını
sağlıyor hem de sımsıkı bir kalkan gibi bağırsak bariyeri
oluşturuyor. Bağırsak dokuları üzerinde oluşan İBS,
İBD ve Crohn, Ülseratif kolit hastalıkların tedavilerinden
yardımcı rol oynuyorlar. Sindirim sisteminin düzenliliğinin
sağlanmasında olumlu etki yaparak gaz, şişkinlik ve
hazımsızlıklar ile kabızlık ve ishal gibi sorunların ortadan

Akkermansia forms intestinal barrier
Reminding that intestinal permeability is the main source
of all diseases in the research of experts, Yılmaz said,
“When the intestinal mucosa cells do not renew themselves
and the gaps between the tissues are opened, all harmful,
toxic, toxic substances and heavy metals go directly to the
organs and tissues by mixing with the blood. Akkermansia
not only renews the intestinal mucosa and increases its
thickness, but also creates an intestinal barrier like a tight

“It ends the hunger and sweet crisis with the various
amino acids, metabolites, bacteriocins and post-probiotic
products it produces. It prevents the excessive secretion
of the hunger hormone Ghrelin with acetic acid, and on
the other hand, it increases the production of the satiety
hormone Leptin with probionic acid. Akkermansia bacteria,
which activates the GLP-1 hormone, which makes eating
less and slowly by sending signals to the brain during the
meal, helps to eliminate Type 2 diabetes by reducing insulin
resistance.”
“Obeziteye çare olabilir”
Haydar Yılmaz, Akkermansia bakterisinin dünyada ünlü

onların parçalanarak yok edilmesinde yardımcı oluyor.
Akkermansia bakterisinin üretmiş olduğu Triptofan amino
asidi ise serotonin yani mutluluk hormonu ile uyku düzenini
sağlayan melatonin hormonun salgılanmasını arttırıyor.
Akkermansia bakterisinin mucizevi özellikleri üretmiş
olduğu bio yararlılığı olan maddelerdir. Yine bakterinin
ürettiği Propiyonik asit trigliserit düşürülmesini sağlaması
ve damar sertliğinin oluşmasını önlemesi ne kadar
yararlı olduğunun bir örneğidir. Bu durum kalp ve damar
hastalıklarının önlenmesinde hayati derecede olumlu bir
etki sağlamaktadır” şeklinde konuştu.
Araştırmacı Yazar Haydar Yılmaz, Türkiye ile dünyada
sadece birkaç ülkede üretilebilen Akkermansia bakterisinin
Türkiye’de en çok ölüm sebepleri arasında yer alan kanser,
kalp hastalıklarının önlenmesinde önemli bir yardımcı

Akkermansia prevents cancer from forming
Stating that studies on Akkermansia bacteria also have
anti-cancer properties, Yılmaz said, “It helps in detecting
and recognizing carcinogenic substances and destroying
them by disintegration. Tryptophan amino acid produced
by Akkermansia bacterium increases the secretion of
serotonin, the happiness hormone, and the melatonin
hormone, which provides sleep patterns. They are
bio-beneficial substances produced by the miraculous
properties of Akkermansia bacteria. Propionic acid
produced by bacteria is an example of how beneficial it
is to reduce triglycerides and prevent arteriosclerosis.
This has a vitally positive effect on the prevention of
cardiovascular diseases.”
Researcher and Author Haydar Yılmaz reiterated that
Akkermansia bacteria, which can be produced in Türkiye
and only a few countries in the world, can be an important
aid in the prevention of cancer and heart diseases, which
are among the leading causes of death in Türkiye.

The Chemistry Technology Center is getting ready to go into operation
Kimya Teknoloji Merkezi faaliyete geçmeye hazırlanıyor
The Chemistry Technology Center (KATİM A.Ş.),
which was implemented by the Istanbul Chemicals
and Chemical Products Exporters’ Association
(İKMİB), the umbrella organization of the Turkish
chemical industry exports, is completing its final
preparations to go into operation in the first half
of 2024.
The Chemistry Technology Center (KATİM A.Ş.), which
was implemented by İKMİB with the vision of developing
high-tech and value-added domestic products and will be
the first in Türkiye, will operate on the basis of technology,
innovation and sustainability in order to increase the
exports of the sector and reduce foreign dependency.
Preparations continue for KATİM A.Ş to start operating.
The Chemistry Technology Center, which will act
as an advanced R&D center, where internationally
valid certificates will be given to our exporters, is an
entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship and development
center, 1,700 square meters of which is prepared with
a special infrastructure for entrepreneurs, in a 4-storey
building in Türkiye’s largest thematic technopark,
Informatics Valley. It will serve as a meeting point where
the entire start-up ecosystem in the chemistry and related

Adil Pelister, Chairman of the Board of İKMİB, said, “With
the Chemistry Technology Center project, which will be
a first in Türkiye, we aim to establish a new ecosystem
focused on high technology and high added value. Thus, we
are taking firm steps forward on the way of undertaking
works that will bring the Turkish chemical industry to the
forefront in global trade. The Chemical Technology Center
will act as a technology base that will cross the threshold
for our chemical industry and exports. We have completed
our company establishment for our Chemical Technology
Center project. We have allocated the space for our head
office in the IT Valley and received our budget approval for
the investment cost from the Ministry of Commerce. We
look forward to the commissioning of KATİM A.Ş. We are
completing our final preparations to put the center into
operation in the first half of 2024.”
Stating that a total of 175 different tests will be carried
out within the Chemistry Technology Center and 83 tests
will be accredited, Pelister said, “The 38 tests currently
performed abroad will be carried out with national
resources thanks to KATİM A.Ş. We are planning to provide
services with a total capacity of 1 million 201 thousand
883 tests per year once our center becomes operational
at full efficiency. With the internationally accredited test
and analysis laboratories to be implemented at KATİM
A.Ş, we will have saved millions of dollars in the country
every year. Thus, we expect a minimum annual saving of
7.2 million dollars at optimum capacity within the scope of
testing and analysis services. On the other hand, through
our Sustainability Center, it will play a major role in the
transition and adaptation processes of our chemical
industry, especially our SMEs, to the green economy. Again,
by establishing our digital library, we will open all sectoral
scientific publications to our users and the world of
science. Through our entrepreneurship incubation center,
we will contribute to the realization of new inventions
and technologies in the field of chemistry by our young
scientists and academics, especially within the scope of
industry-university cooperation. We are sure that our
exporting companies will see our Chemistry Technology
Center as a place they will benefit from with great pride.”

What is hip and knee osteoarthritis/degeneration?
Joint osteoarthritis/degeneration or calcification is a
painful joint disease characterized by friction of bone
surfaces against each other after the articular surfaces
facing each other in knee and hip joints have become worn
out. Although this joint calcification occurs with cartilages
wearing out due to aging, younger patients may also
experience hip fracture and dislocation, avascular necrosis,
knee cartilage injury, severe connective tissue injury and
inflammatory articular rheumatism.
How is advanced hip and knee degeneration
treated?
Advanced degeneration or calcification of hip and knee
joint appear in the form of frequently intensifying and
movement-restricting pain, limited motion, nocturnal
pain, difficulty climbing upstairs/downstairs, knee and
hip joint deformity and pain that will not subside despite
painkillers and physiotherapy modalities. X-rays performed
in such cases are bound to reveal severe narrowing and
collapse. The most effective treatment for hip and knee
osteoarthritis at this stage is total joint prosthesis.
Kalça ve diz eklem osteoartriti/dejenerasyonu
nedir?
Eklem osteoartriti/dejenerasyonu veya kireçlenmesi, diz
ve kalça eklemlerinde birbirine bakan kıkırdak yüzeylerin
aşınması sonucu eklem boşluğunun azalıp kemik yüzeylerin
birbirine sürtünmeye başlamasıyla karakterize, ağrılı bir
eklem hastalığıdır. İleri yaşlarda bu eklem kireçlenmesi
sıklıkla yaşa bağlı kıkırdak aşınması sonucu oluşsa da genç
hastalarda da kalça kırığı ve çıkığı, avasküler nekroz, diz
kıkırdak yaralanması ve ciddi bağ yaralanmaları ile iltihaplı
eklem romatizması görülebilir.
İleri evre kalça ve diz dejenerasyonunda tedavi
nedir?
Kalça ve diz ekleminde ileri evre dejenerasyon veya
kireçlenme, sıklıkla giderek artan ve hareketleri kısıtlayan
ağrı, hareket kısıtlılıkları, gece ağrıları, merdiven
inip çıkarken zorlanma, diz ve kalça ekleminde şekil
bozuklukları ve ağrı kesici kullanmaya veya fizik tedavi
modalitelerine rağmen geçmeyen ağrılarla karşımıza çıkar.
Böyle durumlarda çekilen röntgenlerde eklem aralığında
ileri düzeyde daralma ve çökme görülür. Bu safhada kalça
ve diz osteoartriti için yapılacak en önemli tedavi, total
eklem protezidir.

Total eklem protezi nedir?
Total kalça eklem protezi, kalça ekleminde osteoartritin
görüldüğü femur başının çıkarılıp kalça yuvası (asetabulum)
ve bu femur başının protezle değiştirilerek, sürtünmesiz
hareket edecek yeni bir eklem yüzeyi yaratan bir ameliyattır.
Total diz protezi ise, diz ekleminde dizi oluşturan femur
(uyluk kemiği), tibia (kaval kemiği) ve patella (diz kapağı)
eklem yüzlerinin uygun açılarla kesilerek bu yüzeylerin
sürtünme oluşturmayacak protezle kaplanmasına verilen
isimdir. Böylelikle uygulanacak eklem protezleriyle
gelişen deformiteler ve şekil bozuklukları düzeltilir, kas
ve bağ dengesi tekrar oluşturulur ve sürtünme olmadan
eklemlerin hareketleri tekrar sağlanarak hastanın ağrısız
hareket etmesine izin verilmiş olur.

What is total joint prosthesis?
Total hip joint prosthesis procedure involves removal
of the femoral head with osteoarthritis in the hip joint,
replacement of the joint housing (acetabulum) and
the femoral head with a prosthesis, and creation of a
new frictionless articular surface. Total knee prosthesis
procedure involves cutting the articular surfaces forming
the knee joint (i.e. femur, tibia and patella) at appropriate
angles and covering these surfaces with a frictionless
prosthesis. The prostheses ultimately correct existing
deformities, re-establish the muscle-connective tissue
balance, eliminate friction and allow the patient to move
without pain.
How is total hip prosthesis procedure performed?
Total hip and knee prosthesis operations can be performed
based on two techniques.
•In the traditional technique, x-rays are performed.
A housing for the hip and a stem of fitting size for
the femur are then selected. Bones are cut, and the
acetabulum as well as femoral prosthesis are placed in the
carved locations at suitable angles. The joint is effectively
reseated.
•The other method is robot-assisted total hip prosthesis.
In this method, a computerized tomography (CT) scan is
performed. Surgical planning and prosthetic dimension/
angle calculations are carried out with the help of a robot.
Bones are cut at appropriate angles and prostheses are
placed as planned also with the help of the robot.

What is robot-assisted total hip arthroplasty?
Robotic hip arthroplasty is a method utilizing robotic
technology for replacement of the hip joint. A robotic
surgery system is used in order to allow the surgeon to
place the implant properly. By enabling the surgeon to
place the implant at the correct position and dimensions,
robotic hip arthroplasty can reduce the patient’s healing
period and risk of complication.
Total kalça protezi nasıl yapılır?
Total kalça ve diz protezi ameliyatları iki yöntemle
yapılabilir.
• Geleneksel yöntemde, uygun çekilen grafiler sonrası
kalça için yuva ve femur (uyluk kemiği) için doğru boyutta

Robotic hip arthroplasty can be advisable in the following

treatment methods.
•Wearing or damage in the hip joint.
•Calcified hips on a background of hip dislocation.
How is robot-assisted hip arthroplasty
performed?
Robotic hip arthroplasty is similar to the conventional
hip replacement procedure. However, it involves use of a
robotic surgery system in order to allow the surgeon to
place the implant properly. The surgeon makes use of a
computerized mapping system and obtains 3D images of

the hip joint and peripheral tissues. Using these images,
the robotic surgery system provide guidance for implant
placement in the correct position and dimensions.
What are the advantages of robot-assisted hip
arthroplasty?
Robotic hip arthroplasty has the following advantages:
•It can improve the healing process.
•It reduces risks of complication such as fracture, placement
errors and blood loss.
•It can ensure a precise implant placement procedure.
•It can improve the patient’s hip range of motion.
•It can mitigate pain.

How is the healing process after robot-assisted
hip arthroplasty?
It is normal for patients to observe pain and swelling in the
operation site after undergoing robotic hip arthroplasty.
Following the physiotherapy and exercise program
recommended by the surgeon can help improve the healing
process. After a total hip arthroplasty procedure, the
patient is prompted to sit on the bedside in the evening.
Gait and hip exercises are initiated immediately on the next
day. With the help of our experienced physiotherapy and
rehabilitation team, the patient is expected to comfortably
walk with crutches, sit down and perform hip and lower
back exercises within 3 days; and start performing exercises
involving climbing stairs up and down after 3 days. Swelling
in the hip and calf is normal during this process. Such
swelling will often heal in 1.5 months. After wound care,
patients are discharged on day 4. Sutures are removed after
15 days. The patient is asked to use crutches for 3-4 weeks
and perform prescribed exercises during this period of
time.
How is total knee prosthesis performed?
Total knee prosthesis procedure is performed with an open
approach after performing the relevant x-rays. As per the
classic technique, calcification are cleared; femoral and
tibial canals are accessed; fitting prosthetic dimensions and
angles are determined; and the calcified articular surfaces
in the knee joint are cut in accordance with templates. The
necessary connective tissues are released while performing
these cuts to ensure soft tissue balance.

The most notable difference of robot-assisted total knee
prosthesis with regard to conventional methods is that all
dimensions and angles of the prosthesis are defined in line

ameliyat bölgesinde ağrı ve şişlik yaşaması normaldir.
Cerrahın önerdiği fizik tedavi ve egzersiz programını
takip etmek, iyileşme sürecini hızlandırmaya yardımcı
olabilir. Total kalça artroplastisi cerrahisinden sonra hasta
ameliyat akşamı yatak kenarına oturtulur.
Ertesi gün ise hemen yürüme ve kalça egzersizlerine
başlanır. Deneyimli fizik tedavi ve rehabilitasyon ekibimizle
birlikte hastanın 3 gün içinde koltuk değnekleriyle
rahatça yürümesi, oturması, kalça ve bel egzersizlerini
yapabilmesi ve 3. günden itibaren de merdiven inip çıkma
egzersizlerine başlaması beklenir. Bu süreçte kalçada ve
baldırda şişlikler olması normaldir. Bu şişlikler sıklıkla 1,5
ay içinde düzelir. Yara bakımıyla birlikte hastalar 4. gün
taburcu edilir. Dikiş alınması 15. günü takiben yapılır. Bu
süreçte 3-4 hafta koltuk değneği kullanımıyla öğretilen
egzersizlerin uygulanması istenir.
Total diz protezi nasıl yapılır?
Total diz protezi, uygun radyografiler çekildikten sonra
diz eklemine açık yaklaşımla uygulanır. Klasik yöntemde
eklem kireçlenmeleri temizlendikten sonra uyluk ve kaval
kemiği kanallarına girişler yapılır ve doğru protez boyutu
ve açıları belirlenerek diz eklemindeki kireçlenmiş eklem
yüzleri bu şablonlar yardımıyla kesilir. Bu kesiler sırasında
gerekli diz eklemi bağ gevşetmeleri yapılarak yumuşak
doku dengesi oluşturulur.

and joint alignments. The modeling is uploaded to the
robot’s software, which lays out the correct dimensions
and prosthetic localization prior to performance of the
operation. The robot enables proper cutting of the bones
without any error during the operation. In turn, this
eliminates the need to access bone canals to perform the
cuts. As the prosthesis is properly placed after the cuts,
excessive connective tissue releases are not necessary.
Who is eligible for robot-assisted knee
prosthesis?
Robot-assisted knee prosthesis procedure can be
performed on all patients suffering from advanced-stage
calcification that requires total knee prosthesis. In fact,
robot-assisted knee prosthesis particularly facilitates the
procedure for patients with severe inward or outward
curvature, severe movement restriction and hindered canal
access or deformity.
What are the advantages of robot-assisted knee
prosthesis?
The most notable advantage offered by robot-assisted
knee prosthesis procedures is that it enables error-free
planning of prosthetic angles and bone cuts, as it involves
a true-to-life modeling of the patient’s knee. The aim
is to clearly demonstrate the patient’s own mechanical
properties, ensure the most precise placement of the
prosthesis possible and prolong prosthetic survival
duration. In the short term, the most significant advantages
include less blood loss due to absence of bone canal access,
less postoperative pain due to less soft tissue releases and
facilitated and early rehabilitation.
How is rehabilitation conducted after robotassisted
knee prosthesis?
After a total knee arthroplasty procedure, the patient is
prompted to sit on the bedside in the evening.
Gait and knee exercises are initiated immediately on the
next day. With the help of our experienced physiotherapy
and rehabilitation team, the patient is expected to
comfortably walk with crutches, sit down and perform
knee flexion and extension exercises within 3 days; and
start performing exercises involving climbing stairs up and
down after 3 days. Swelling in the knee and calf is normal

to use crutches for 3-4 weeks and perform prescribed

Early-term rehabilitation is easier due to the mitigated
postoperative pain after robot-assisted surgery.

Total diz protezinin gerektiği ileri evre kireçlenmesi olan
tüm hastalarda robot yardımlı diz protezleri uygulanabilir.
İleri derecede içe ve dışa eğriliği olan, ciddi hareket
kısıtlılığı olan, kanal içi girişe engel protezi veya eğriliği
olan hastalarda robot yardımlı diz protezi, özellikle protez
uygulamalarını daha kolay hale getirir.
Robot yardımlı diz protezinin avantajları nelerdir?
Robot yardımlı diz protezi uygulamalarının en önemli
avantajı, hastanın kendi dizinin gerçek bir modellemesi
yapıldığından, kişinin kendi boyut, protez yerleşim açıları
ve kemik kesi düzeylerinin hatasız planlanmasına izin
vermesidir. Böylece hastanın kendi mekanik özelliklerinin

Robot yardımlı diz protezi sonrası rehabilitasyon
nasıl yapılır?
Total diz artroplastisi cerrahisi sonra hasta ameliyat akşamı
yatak kenarına oturtulur. Ertesi gün ise hemen yürüme
ve diz egzersizlerine başlanır. Deneyimli fizik tedavi ve
rehabilitasyon ekibimizle birlikte hastanın 3 gün içinde
koltuk değnekleriyle rahatça yürümesi, dizinin bükme ve
açma egzersizleri ile 90-100 dereceye kadar bükmesi ve
3. günden itibaren de merdiven inip çıkma egzersizlerine
başlaması amaçlanır. Bu süreçte diz ve baldırda şişlikler
olması normaldir. Bu şişlikler sıklıkla 1,5 ay içinde düzelir.
Yara bakımıyla birlikte hastalar 4. gün taburcu edilir.
Dikiş alınması 15. günü takiben yapılır. Bu süreçte 3-4
hafta koltuk değneği kullanımıyla öğretilen egzersizlerin
uygulanması istenir. Erken dönem rehabilitasyon, robot
yardımlı cerrahi uygulamalarından sonra ağrının daha az
olması nedeniyle daha kolaydır.

Excess weight and diabetes can lead to vision loss!
Aşırı kilo ve diyabet, görme kaybına yol açabilir!
Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün, physician at Kaşkaloğlu
Eye Hospital said that early diagnosis is important
in the treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy, which is
the most common cause of vision loss.
Noting that Diabetic Retinopathy, which is generally seen
in advanced ages due to Type 2 diabetes, progresses
insidiously, Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün stated that the disease
is usually noticed in later stages and can lead to vision loss.
Stating that diabetes affects the eyes as well as the general
health of the body, Prof. Dr. Erakgün said, “Diabetes causes
diseases by affecting the small vascular systems in the
brain, kidneys and eyes. Diabetic Retinopathy does not
show itself immediately. Even if the person does not feel
a problem with vision, he may experience vision loss after

ilerlediğini belirten Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün, hastalığın
genelde ileri safhalarda fark edildiğini ve görme kayıplarına
yol açabildiğini belirtti.
Diyabet hastalığının vücudun genel sağlığının yanı sıra
gözleri de olumsuz olarak etkilediğini dile getiren Prof.
Dr. Erakgün, “Diyabet, beyin, böbrek ve gözlerdeki küçük
damar sistemlerini etkileyerek hastalıklara neden olur.

many years. He may even become blind, depending on the
progression of the disease. It is too late when the disease
gives signs that will show itself. In the treatment, only a
partial improvement or preservation of the current eye
condition is achieved. For this reason, those with diabetes
must undergo regular eye check-ups.”
Causes vision loss
Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün said that because diabetic
retinopathy causes bleeding and edema in the visual
center, it can lead to vision loss and even blindness.
Prof. Erakgün gave the following information, “Our body
causes unwanted new vessel formation to compensate
for the lack of oxygen in the eye. As a result, unhealthy
and fragile vessels cause bleeding. Diabetic Retinopathy
is usually seen in both eyes. In some cases, it can show
asymmetric development in different eyes. When a certain
degree of damage is exceeded, only partial treatment can
be done. In diabetic retinopathy, treatment is planned
according to certain criteria using certain diagnostic
methods. OCT and Eye Angiography reveal edema and
unwanted vascular formations in the visual center. If edema
develops in the visual center, needle therapy is applied.
This treatment is a method that we have used frequently,

bleeding and also dries the edema in the visual center.
During the treatment process, this process can be repeated

Görme kaybına neden oluyor
Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün, Diyabetik retinopatinin görme
merkezinde kanama ve ödeme yol açması yüzünden görüş
kaybına hatta körlüğe yol açabildiğini söyledi.
Prof. Dr. Erakgün, şu bilgileri verdi: “Vücudumuz gözdeki
oksijen yetersizliğini telafi etmek için istenmeyen yeni
damar oluşumuna yol açıyor. Bunun sonucunda sağlıklı
olmayan ve kırılgan yapıdaki damarlar kanamaya neden
oluyor. Diyabetik Retinopati genelde iki gözde birden
görülüyor. Kimi durumlarda farklı gözlerde asimetrik
gelişim de gösterebiliyor. Belli bir hasar derecesini aşınca
ancak kısmi tedavi olabiliyor. Diyabetik retinopatide
belli tanı yöntemleri kullanılarak birtakım kriterlere
göre tedavi planlanıyor. OCT ve Göz Anjiyosu ile görme
merkezinde ödem ve istenmeyen damar oluşumları
ortaya konuyor. Görme merkezinde ödem gelişmiş ise
iğne tedavisi uygulanıyor. Bu tedavi özellikle son 15 yılda

sıklıkla başvurduğumuz bir yöntem. İğne tedavisi kanamayı
durduruyor ve görme merkezindeki ödemi de kurutuyor.
Tedavi sürecinde duruma göre bu işlem tekrarlanabiliyor.
Bir diğer uygulanan yöntem ise, Yeşil Argon Lazer tedavisi.
Lazerle retinanın oksijen ihtiyacı azaltılıp yeni damar
oluşmasının önüne geçiliyor. İleri derecedeki süreçlerde ise
Vitrektomi yöntemiyle ameliyat gerçekleştiriliyor. Vitrektomi
yöntemiyle göz içinde oluşan kanama temizleniyor.
Kanamaya yol açan damarlar ve zar oluşumu da tedavi
ediliyor”

Lifestyle change needed
Expressing that Diabetic Retinopathy is not a completely
treatable disease, Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün said, “As long
as diabetes continues in the body, this disease may
progress or recur. Diabetes is often associated with
obesity, unhealthy diet, overweight and hypertension.
For this reason, besides diabetes, obesity, hypertension
and unhealthy diet should be prevented and weight loss
should be controlled. Lifestyle change is important in
the treatment of this disease. Type 1 diabetes, a type of
diabetes, can be seen at very young ages and in young
people. For this reason, diabetic retinopathy can occur at
an early age, for example, in the 20s. The same diagnosis
and treatment methods are applied. Considering that
the patient has a long life ahead of him due to his youth,
he has to fight this disease by getting it under control.
This disease is also seen frequently in our country. Even
if those with diabetes do not have any vision complaints,
they should act consciously and be examined at regular
intervals.”
Yaşam tarzı değişikliği gerekiyor
Diyabetik Retinopati’nin tamamen tedavi edilebilen bir
hastalık olmadığı bilgisini veren Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün:
“Vücutta diyabet rahatsızlığı devam ettikçe bu hastalık
da ilerleyebilir veya tekrar edebilir. Diyabet, sıklıkla
obezite, sağlıksız beslenme, aşırı kilo, hipertansiyon ile
birliktelik gösterir. Bu nedenle diyabetin yanı sıra, obezite,
hipertansiyon ile sağlıksız beslenmenin önüne geçilmeli ve
kontrollü bir şekilde kilo verilmelidir. Yaşam tarzı değişikliği
bu hastalığın tedavisinde önem taşımaktadır. Çok küçük
yaşlarda ve gençlerde de diyabetin bir türü olan Tip 1
diyabet görülebilir. Bu nedenle diyabetik retinopati erken bir
yaşta, örneğin 20’li yaşlarda ortaya çıkabiliyor. Aynı tanı ve
tedavi yöntemleri uygulanıyor. Hastanın gençliği nedeniyle
önünde uzun bir yaşam olduğu göz önüne alındığında bu
hastalığı kontrol altına alarak mücadele etmesi gerekiyor.
Bu hastalık ülkemizde de sıklıkla görülüyor. Şeker
rahatsızlığı bulunanların herhangi bir görme şikâyeti
bulunmasa bile bu konuda bilinçli bir şekilde hareket
etmeleri ve düzenli aralıklarla muayene olmaları gerekiyor.”

Sarı nokta görmeyi tehdit ediyor!
Gözün merkezi görmesinden sorumlu olan
‘makula’ ismi verilen bölgedeki yapısal bozulma
sonucunda ortaya çıkan sarı nokta hastalığı
(yaşa bağlı makula dejenerasyonu) zamanla
görme kaybına neden olabiliyor. Yaşlanma süreci
ve diğer nedenlere bağlı olarak başlayan sarı
nokta hastalığı, erken dönemde hiçbir şikâyet
oluşturmadığı için çoğu zaman 2. ve 3. evrede
teşhis edilebiliyor. Memorial Kayseri Hastanesi
Göz Hastalıkları Bölümü’nden Doç. Dr. Selim
Demir, sarı nokta hastalığı ve tedavisi ile ilgili
bilgi verdi.
Yellow spot disease (age-related macular
degeneration), which occurs as a result of
structural deterioration in the region called the
‘macular’, which is responsible for the central
vision of the eye, can cause vision loss over time.
Yellow spot disease, which starts due to the
aging process and other reasons, can often be
diagnosed in the 2nd and 3rd stages, as it does not
cause any complaints in the early period. Assoc.
Dr. Selim Demir, Ophthalmology Department at
Memorial Kayseri Hospital informed about yellow
spot disease and its treatment.
Occurs in the nerve layer
“The disease that occurs in the nerve layer, which is about
the size of a lentil grain that allows the eye to see sharply,
is called yellow spot disease. Nerve cells in the retina (nerve
cell) layer, located at the back of the eye, are not equally
dense everywhere. The center, where the light coming
into the eye is focused, is called the macula and allows us
to see sharply. Eye-specific yellow pigments called lutein
and zeaxanthin protect the macula from excessive light
damage. Because of the color of these pigments, this is
called the yellow spot. This region covers almost 5% of the
retina but is responsible for almost 95% of visual function.
In summary, there is a very high metabolic activity in a
small area. As a result of lifelong intense metabolic activity,

toksik artıklarını temizleyemez hale gelmekte ve retina
hücrelerinin beslenmesi bozulmaktadır. Beslenemeyen
sinir hücrelerinin fonksiyonlarını kaybetmesi ve ölmesine
sarı nokta hastalığı denilmektedir.”
Yavaş yavaş görmeyi tehdit ediyor
“Sarı nokta hastalığının, ‘kuru tip’ ve ‘yaş tip’ olarak
adlandırılan iki farklı çeşidi vardır. Kuru tip en sık görülen
sarı nokta hastalığıdır. Kuru tip olarak çok şükür ki
yavaş ilerleme göstermektedir. Hastalık başlangıcı ile
görmeyi çok ciddi etkileyecek ileri aşamaya gelmesi
birçok hastada 10 yıldan daha fazla bir süre almaktadır.
Kuru tipte sarı nokta altında temizlenemeyen metabolik
artıkların birikmesi ile ‘druzen’ adlı beyaz-sarı renkli
noktasal odaklar oluşur. Bunların artması ile sinir hücre
tahribatı artar ve görme azalır. Hastalığın yaş tipi ise
maalesef ciddi ve ani görme kaybına neden olmaktadır.
Ortaya çıkan görme kaybı ağrısızdır. Yaş tip, sarı nokta

the macula (yellow spot) is no longer able to clear its toxic
residues and the nutrition of retinal cells is impaired. The
loss of function and death of nerve cells that cannot be fed
is called macular degeneration.”
Slowly threatening to vision
“There are two different types of yellow spot disease, called
‘dry type’ and ‘wet type’. The dry type is the most common
yellow spot disease. Fortunately, it progresses slowly as a
dry type. With the onset of the disease, it takes more than
10 years for many patients to reach an advanced stage
that will seriously affect vision. With the accumulation of
metabolic wastes that cannot be cleaned under the dry type
yellow spot, white-yellow dot foci called druzen are formed.
With their increase, nerve cell destruction increases and
vision decreases. Unfortunately, the age type of the disease
causes serious and sudden vision loss. The resulting vision
loss is painless. Wet type occurs in the form of uncontrolled
abnormal vessels and bleeding and leakage from these
vessels due to the vascular growth factors (VEGF) secreted
by the yellow spot region as a result of nutritional defect.”
More common over the age of 60
“This disease is a disease of old age. If we cannot do many
things as we used to as we get older, visual function also
decreases with aging. The yellow spot, which is the most
active area of the eye, also loses its old performance with
aging. This disease is more common in people aged 60 and
over. Genetic predisposition, exposure to sunlight, smoking
are among the risk factors. Since the disease is progressive,
there may be milder and vague complaints in the early
period, while the complaints increase in advanced stages.”
If the lines appear slanted while reading a book…
“Observing oblique lines, seeing objects larger or smaller
than they are are among the early complaints of the disease.
Especially when reading a book, dimpling or bending of
the writings in some areas is a sign of yellow spot disease.
Blurred vision, being unable to see the center of the place
seen clearly, and being able to select the shores are more
advanced stages. In glaucoma (eye pressure) patients, a
narrowing of the visual field is observed on the shores due
to damage, while the opposite is true in yellow spot disease.
In other words, patients have difficulty seeing the center
while they can see the shores.”

çalışan bölgesi olan sarı nokta da yaşlanma ile eski
performans kaybolmaktadır. Bu hastalık özellikle 60 yaş ve
üzerindeki insanlarda daha fazla görülür. Genetik yatkınlık,
güneş ışığına maruziyet, sigara kullanmak risk faktörleri
arasındadır. Hastalık ilerleyici yapıda olduğu için erken
dönemde daha hafif, belli belirsiz şikayetler olabilirken, ileri
evrelerde şikayetler artmaktadır.”

“Çizgilerin eğik görülmesi, cisimlerin olduğundan daha büyük
veya küçük görülmesi hastalığın erken görülen şikayetleri
arasındadır. Özellikle kitap okurken bazı bölgelerdeki
yazıların çukurlaşması ya da eğilmesi sarı nokta hastalığının
belirtisidir. Görme bulanıklığı, bakılan yerin merkezini net
göremezken kıyıları seçebilmek daha ileri aşamada görülen
tablolardır. Glokom (göz tansiyonu) hastalarında hasara
bağlı görme alanın kıyılarda daralma görülürken sarı nokta
hastalığında bunun tam tersi olmaktadır. Yani hastalar
kıyıları görebilirken merkezi görmekte güçlük çekmektedir.”

Cardiologist Dr. Yılmaz Ömür Otlu, Private Gözde
Kuşadası Hospital said that early diagnosis saves
lives in cardiovascular diseases, which are the
number one cause of death in the world and in our

Stating that the developing technology offers advantages

Virtual angiography offers advantages
Expressing that virtual angiography offers many
advantages over classical angiography, Dr. Yılmaz Ömür
Otlu continued his words as follows, “Virtual angiography
does not require a catheter to enter the body through the
inguinal or arm artery. Therefore, bleeding complications
do not occur. Does not require hospitalization. The
process is finished in minutes. It displays the entire wall
of the heart vessels, not just the inner wall. It gives more
detailed information about the plaque structure causing
the obstruction. In addition to vascular imaging, heart
valves, heart chambers, muscle tissue of the heart, the
membrane surrounding the heart, and the aorta are also
displayed together. Thus, detailed information about the
anatomy of the heart is obtained. Before the procedure,
vascular access is opened through the arm vein. During
the shooting, a liquid called “contrast substance”, which
enables the visualization of vascular structures and is
cleared from the body through the kidneys, is given
through the vascular access. Images taken from the
patient are processed on the computer with the help of a
tomography device. It is made three-dimensional with the
help of various techniques at workstations. The images
are interpreted by the cardiology and radiology specialist
doctors and the patient is informed about the result by the
physician.”

sözlerine şöyle devam etti: “Sanal anjiyografi, kasık veya
kol atardamarından vücuda katater ile girmeyi gerektirmez.
Bu nedenle kanama komplikasyonu oluşmaz. Hastaneye
yatış gerektirmez. İşlem dakikalar içerisinde biter.
Sadece kalp damarlarının iç duvarını değil, tüm duvarını
görüntüler. Tıkanıklığa yol açan plak yapısı ile ilgili daha
detaylı bilgi verir. Damar görüntülemesine ilaveten kalp
kapakçıkları, kalp odacıkları, kalbin kas dokusu, kalbi
çevreleyen zar ve aort damarı da birlikte görüntülenir.
Böylece kalp anatomisi ile ilgili detaylı bilgi edinilir. İşlem
öncesi kol toplardamarından damar yolu açılır. Çekim
esnasında damar yolundan “kontrast madde” adı verilen,
damar yapılarının görüntülenmesini sağlayan ve vücuttan
böbrekler yoluyla temizlenen sıvı verilir. Tomografi cihazı
yardımıyla hastadan alınan görüntüler bilgisayarda işlenir.
İş istasyonlarında çeşitli teknikler yardımıyla üç boyutlu
hale getirilir. Kardiyoloji ve radyoloji uzman doktorları
tarafından görüntüler yorumlanır ve hasta sonuç ile ilgili
hekimince bilgilendirilir.”

completed the inspection processes at its production
facilities in Sultanbeyli, Istanbul, received the European
GMP Certificate.
Exporting to 23 countries, Berko Pharmaceuticals’ EU-GMP
certificate provides trade opportunities with European
Union countries, as well as a reference value for entry to

advantage in the global market with the EU GMP Certificate

After graduating from Istanbul Boys’ High Schooli in 2007,
Aytaç Yeğin graduated from the Department of Electrical
Engineering at Istanbul Technical University and completed
his MBA master’s degree at Koç University in January 2011.
Aytaç Yeğin, who joined Pfizer Türkiye in August 2011 as
the Business Development Department Project Manager,
was the Product Manager in the Hospital Category between
March 2013 and 2015, the Country Portfolio Leader on
a product basis between March 2015 and 2017, and the
Marketing Manager between 2017 and 2020. He then
worked as the Marketing Director. Aytaç Yeğin has been
working as the Marketing Director at Viatris since 2020,
after the separation from Pfizer-Upjohn.

Dr. Erdem Özdemir, Medical Director at Astellas Pharma Türkiye
Leading the scientific partnership processes of
Astellas Türkiye since 2021, Dr. Erdem Özdemir
was appointed as Medical Director at Astellas
Pharma Türkiye.
An important assignment has been made in Astellas Pharma
Türkiye, which operates as the pioneer of change in the
field of health with the vision of transforming innovative
science into value for society. Having successfully served
as the Senior Medical Manager of the company since 2021,
Dr. Erdem Özdemir was appointed as Medical Director at
Astellas Pharma Türkiye as of August 1, 2023. As a member
of Astellas Türkiye Leadership Team, Dr. Özdemir will report
his work to the International Markets and China Medical
Leader. After graduating from Istanbul University Istanbul
Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and completing Hemodialysis
Medicine Education in 2004, Dr. Erdem Özdemir moved to
the pharmaceutical industry after working as a physician at
Baxter RTS Transmed Dialysis Center between 2003-2006.
He achieved various successes in Roche Pharmaceuticals
between 2006-2011, in Novartis Oncology between 2011-
2017, and in Boehringer Ingelheim between 2017-2018,
together with the teams he led. Before joining Astellas
Pharmaceuticals Türkiye, Dr. Özdemir most recently served
as the Medical Department Manager at Centurion.
Erdem Özdemir, who led the scientific collaborations
established with the Nephrology community as the Senior
Medical Manager at Astellas Pharma Türkiye, ensured
that all medical trainings were completed successfully in
order to perfect customer interaction. In the realization
of the launch plan, strong cooperation was established
with all functions and Astellas Pharma made significant
contributions to Türkiye’s effective representation in the
Astellas International Markets Medical Organization.
Yenilikçi bilimi toplum için değere dönüştürme vizyonuyla
sağlık alanında değişimin öncüsü olarak faaliyet gösteren
Astellas İlaç Türkiye’de önemli bir görevlendirme

20 yaş dişlerinin çekilip çekilmemesi konusunda
değerlendirmelerde bulundu. Altop, bu tür
dişlerin asemptomatik olsa dahi çevresinde
kese oluşturabileceğini ve her vakanın ayrı bir
değerlendirmeye ihtiyaç duyduğunu belirtti.

Altop, Üsküdar Dental Hospital made evaluations
about whether wisdom teeth should be extracted
or not. Altop stated that such teeth can form a
sac around them even if they are asymptomatic,
and each case needs a separate evaluation.
Experts state that there is no need to extract wisdom
teeth that are fully erupted and in a suitable position.
However, noting that problems such as gingivitis may occur
in semi-impacted wisdom teeth, Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery Lect. Prof. Dr. Seda Altop, Üsküdar Dental Hospital
said, “In this case, problems such as abscesses on the jaw
face, swelling on the face, pain and limitation in mouth
opening may occur and may need to be withdrawn.” said.
Emphasizing the need for radiographic evaluation to
determine whether there is a problem, Altop said that the
decision to extract can be made after the evaluation of
issues such as the anatomical relationship with the nerve,
whether a cyst is formed, and damage to the surrounding
tissue and teeth.

Providing information on when wisdom teeth do not need
to be extracted, Altop said, “Fully erupted wisdom teeth
in the mouth; If it is in the occlusion, that is, if there is a
tooth in return, it is in a proper position, does not damage
the surrounding tissues and is healthy, there is no need for
extraction.”
Bacteria danger in semi-impacted wisdom teeth
Talking about whether impacted or semi-impacted wisdom
teeth require extraction or not, Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery Lect. Prof. Dr. Seda Altop, Üsküdar Dental Hospital
said, “Gingivitis may develop due to bacterial accumulation
between the gums and teeth in semi-impacted 20-year-old
teeth in the jawbone. In this case, maxillofacial abscesses
may cause facial swelling, pain, limitation in mouth opening
and should be removed.”
Pointing out that wisdom teeth that are completely
embedded in the jawbone can also cause problems, Altop
concluded his words as follows, “Even if it is asymptomatic,
the sac around it can turn into cysts in fully impacted
wisdom teeth.
Therefore, radiographic evaluation is required. The decision
for extraction is made by evaluating the anatomical
relationship with the nerve, whether a cyst is formed, and
the damage to the surrounding tissues and teeth.”
