WELCOME TO ASELSAN INTERVIEW

I S S U E 1 / / 2 0 2 1

H: l am Huzeyfe Emre Böge from Electr c ty Prep Class 9/A

B: l am Buse Sert from Mach nery Class 9/C

Today, we are talk ng about Aselsan H ghschool and our exper ences about school.

H: Yes you are more exper enced than me so what thoughts d d you have when you were choos ng th s

school?

B: When I was choos ng the school I was a b t worr ed because t was the f rst year of th s school. Our

teachers were more Profess onal and ready for the new school and students than I expected. They took

care of every problem n trouble we had.

B:What about you?

H:Yes l was worr ed too because t s the second year of school and we d dn’t know everyth ng well but l

was exc ted too about school because th s school g ves us a lot of poss b l t es l ke work ng n Aselsan,

be ng n Engl sh prep class and hav ng 24 hours of Engl sh lesson. We have Engl sh lessons because

Engl sh s the most used language as worldw de and t’s val d nearly all of the countr es n the world so

t s a very b g advantage for us. There s one more mportant advantage too :If you are n an old school

you have to follow the school culture wh ch was formed by elder students’ behav ours but f you are n

a new school ,culture shapes w th your behav ours. We are n a new school and we have got new

teachers and fr ends so we w ll shape the system, the school culture. It s a very b g advantage for us.

All of these pos t ve th ngs beat my worry and l chose th s school.

Some quest ons, suggest ons from teachers

1. What are the good and bad th ngs about the ne ghbourhood of the school?

B: I really l ke my school ne ghbourhood. It s qu et and not much happens n the streets. S nce the

place where the school s located s not crowded and no sy, we do not get d stracted dur ng the

lessons, and when the weather s hot, we can eas ly open the w ndows and study w thout worry ng

about no se. At the same t me, there s not much veh cle or traff c no se wh le n class. Although there

are roads around the school, cars do not pass often, so we do not have any concerns when com ng and

go ng to school. S nce t s close to the metro, we can eas ly prov de transportat on. However, very few

students l ve close to the school and the rest of us cannot say that we l ve close to the school.

Therefore, our transportat on between school and home takes a long t me. Th s d stance between the

school and our homes can somet mes be very t r ng. It can be very d ff cult to return home after a t r ng

day. Somet mes a delay n one of the transportat on veh cles we use can cause more than one student

to be late for school.

H: In fact l can only say school s n a qu et place. I don’t have a lot of dea about ne ghbourhood of

school because n our prep term we went to school only for 2 days due to corona v rus. Even those 2

days have been cancelled. But we have full t me onl ne learn ng nstead of 2 days face to face learn ng

now. I am happy for th s because a full t me onl ne educat on s better than 2 days face to face learn ng.

I S S U E 1 / / 2 0 2 1

2.The number of the male students s much more than the number of the female students at our

school. Is t an advantage or d sadvantage?

B: Actually, th s s not a problem n our school. We all treat each other w th respect and obey the rules

that must be obeyed. Our commun cat on and respect for each other n the classroom frees us from

problems that may ar se due to gender d fferences. In some cases, we may be alone among the male

major ty, but generally we do not feel lonely because we get along well as a class. Due to gender

d fferences, d fferent react ons and requests may occur from each other n d fferent s tuat ons, but we

can handle th s one way or another.Teachers and the management evaluate all students equally and

fa rly. I th nk t s not much d fferent from equal classes.

H: You are exactly r ght. I th nk t sn’t a problem too. Maybe t can changes for other people but I don’t

g ve mportance to th s s tuat on.

3. Can you talk about the relat onsh ps between the teachers and the students?

H: We are learn ng from chosen, qual f ed teachers t s very n ce th ng for us. People generally say ,at

h ghschool nobody m nds you but at our school our teachers and school adm n strators always take

care of w th us.

B: Our teachers always care about us. They always help us when we have any problems, even f t s not

related to the school or the lessons. We know that a teacher we trust w ll always help us, even out of

school, and that really g ves us a lot of conf dence. Somet mes we can even chat and laugh together

l ke our close fr ends! They are always helpful when there s a problem w th the lessons, and they often

l sten to our deas and try to make the lessons more su table for us. When we do not understand a top c

n the lessons, they tell us many t mes n d fferent ways and make sure we understand the subject.

They try to attract our attent on even n the most bor ng subjects w th many fun methods so that the

lessons are not bor ng.

TOMORROWS ARE YOURS

29th October 1938...

Wh le Atatürk was lay ng s ck n h s bed n Dolmabahçe Palace, Turkey was celebrat ng the

Republ c Day. He was exhausted and slugg sh… H s face was paler than usual.

H s adopt ve daughter Sab ha Gökçen was s tt ng next to h m. To her,

“Today s Republ c Day… ” he sa d.

Although he put h s heart to take part n the celebrat ngs, he couldn’t go to Ankara Kulel

M l tary H gh School students who prepared to parade, came to the Palace. Wh le they

were play ng the brass band, they shouted

“We want to see h m, we want to see Atatürk!”.

S nce all the students p led up on the s de of the steamer fac ng the Palace, the steamer

leaned aga nst dangerously to th s s de; but ne ther of them cared about t. Even a few students

were seen fall ng nto the water and they were saved by the r fr ends.

Wh le the brass band’s and students’ vo ces were f ll ng the room , Sal h Bozok and

Atatürk’s doctor Neşet Ömer came n Atatürk’s room. To them;

“Do you hear?” he sa d.

“Yes we do Pasha!”

“These are our teens!”

“The teens to whom we w ll hand over the Turk sh Republ c…”

“ Yes Pasha! “

Atatürk –who l stened the teens’ calls for some t me- suddenly sa d:

“ I want to see these teens. I should even wave my hand to them as they have come here. ”

Neşet Ömer and Mr. Sal h tr ed to put h m off.

“ However?! “

Atatürk backed to them and sa d:

“ What the however s? “

Doctors had noth ng to do but help to get and dress h m up. Wh le he was dress ng up, h s

face turned shades to shades and he was sweat ng cold.

H s doctor and Mr.Sal h took h s arms. Atatürk sat down to the couch –formerly placed to the

edge of the w ndow - The curta ns of the w ndow were drawn.

The teens wa t ng for h m went crazy when they saw h m.

They started to s ng ‘The March of Youth’.

The r claps and vo ces were f ll ng the room.

Atatürk waved to them for a few t mes.

“ These Republ c Days and tomorrows are yours. “ he mumbled. And after that he sa d:

“ I am t red. I’ve been t r ng too qu ckly.please take me to my bed. I am so pleased to see

them…” He had backed and called out them:

“Goodbye ch ldren…”

He was n tears wh le he was gett ng back to h s bed w th the help of Neşet Ömer and Mr.

Sal h. Th s was the last encounter for h m w th the youth and the students.

A BOOK REVIEW

”ŞEKER PORTAKALI”

I should say someth ng. I st ll regret for read ng th s book so late. But, th s book has become

my most mportant book n my bookshelf.

F rstly, I w ll talk about the wr ter. Vasconcelos, tr ed a lot of jobs before be ng a wr ter, f nally

he dec ded to be a wr ter. My L ttle Sugar Orange Tree s one of h s f rst books. He wrote th s

book n twelve days. In fact, Vasconcelos says although he wrote th s novel n twelve days, n

h s heart he wrote t for more than twenty years. It s not an autob ography but th s novel s h s

l fe. Wr t ng a novel n twelve days takes great mystery and t shows h s job cho ce s a true

cho ce. The book s about a ch ld’s l fe. H s name s Zezé. He has a poor fam ly, h s l ttle sugar

orange tree and a stranger he sees l ke h s father. One day he w ll d scover the real pa n. And he

understands th s pa n s not l ke a phys cal pa n. He s n ne years old but h s thoughts are not.

You w ll see when you read th s book. You w ll be very mpressed but not by ts top c. You’ll be

mpressed by Zezé’s mag nat on. ‘ How can anyone have mag nat on l ke that? ‘ You’ll ask th s

quest on yourself a lot of t mes. Th s book makes you th nk wh le read ng but makes you cry

wh le th nk ng.

Zezé s a very spec al ch ld. He s naughty, act ve and also he has a dev l s de but he s full of

love. He has a b g fantasy world. H s best fr end s l ttle sugar orange tree. He shares everyth ng

w th th s tree. He has many s bl ngs, mother and also father but he f nds fam ly love n

someone else. Portuguese… He hates from h m at f rst. But then he sees h m l ke h s father.

Th s book has a bad th ng. Everyone can’t read th s book. I know ts name makes you th nk

that t s a ch ld book but t s not just a ch ld book. It takes effort to jo n Zezé’s world and

understand h m. For all that, th s book s an amaz ng book.

TIME MANAGEMENT

The most mportant concept n human l fe s t me. The better a person uses t me , the more

effect ent she/he w ll be n l fe. For example a person who plays computer games for 2 hours a

day, play ng computer games makes 30 days a year. What do you th nk play ng computer

games w ll contr bute to

her/h m?

Of course he/she needs to play games or do act v t es to relax. However he/she has to

organ se that very carefully . I th nk phys cal and mental enhancement act v t es or hobb es are

better than t me wast ng th ngs. If a person says ‘’ The days pass so fast’’ we can say he/she

cannot manage the r own t me. Don’t forget ! You w ll enjoy l fe f you l ve a planned l fe.

Actually ‘’manag ng t me means manag ng yourself’’

Unplanned people spend t me w th th nk ng the r respons b l t es and make excuses. But

planned people do the r respons b l t es effect vely and correctly. Manag ng t me br ngs

success. For example when we look at the success of a student who stud es h s lesson regulary

and a student who works one day before the exam, regularly study ng student s obv ously

successful.F rstly the person should check h s rout ne and analyze how planned they are. After

then the person should leave useless tr v a and person should create a good rout ne.

If you are lazy and always putt ng off your respons b l t es you can wr te your respons b l ty on

a p ece of paper and then you can do them one by one. In th s way , th ngs that seem

mposs ble to do together, become easy and s mple. When you are busy w th an unnecessary

job, you can ask yourself the quest on ‘‘What does t contr bute to me?’’.

DO NOT LET THE TIME PASS !!!

FACTS ABOUT BLACK HOLE

As you know f nally we took a photo of a blackhole last year. But do we know what

t means? If you ask anyone n the street about blackhole, probably you can't get a proper

answer. That’s why today I w ll expla n what actually blackhole s. Let's start w th the def n t on

of blackhole. Bas cly blackholes can be def ned as “The body of the star that used to be here"

because blackholes are actually dead stars. We can see a term as “Dead Stars” here. You know

stars actually are not al ve but the r t mel ne s l ke us. They occur, they need energy to l ve and

one day they d e. Almost all stars’ l fe t mel ne are the same only they have some d fferences

when they d e. Bas cly a star can transform three th ngs after t d es.

All stars d e and after that they become d fferent th ngs depends on how b g they are. Stars

are l ke a g ant fus on reactors they burn the elements n them and when they f n sh the r fu l

they d e. For example the Sun. F rstly the Sun sn't a huge star actually t's a l ttle one but that’s

good because l ttle stars have long l ves. Today the Sun s us ng hydrogen as fuel but one day t

w ll f n sh but t doesn't mean that the Sun s go ng to d e. After the Sun f n shes ts hydrogen t

w ll be wane day by day and the Sun w ll become even hotter than the past and t s go ng to

start to use hel um as fuel. When the Sun starts to use hel um as fuel t w ll start to w ne too and

t w ll become a red g ant. After us ng hel um, t w ll use l th um and that w ll cont nue unt l the

Sun starts to use t ron as fuel. Fus on of ron s not very effect ve so you try to fus on ron you

can't get more energy than ts fus on capac ty. Because of that sun can’t l ve anymore and t

w ll collapse to tself. After that sun cont nues ts new l fe as a wh te dwarf

A NEUTRONSTAR

If a star s about 20-25 t mes b gger the Sun, when t starts to fus on ron t w ll collapse

even faster and faster a second and t w ll explode aga n. Th s explos on s called

“Supernova". Novas are really strong but supernovas are stronger as you can th nk. A

supernova can make a hole n a galaxy but supernovas are not always bad. A star can

born thanks to a supernova and f th s supernova s really strong t can make a

m n galaxy. For example the closest th ng to our galaxy s Magellan Nebula, t’s a

m n galaxy and t was made by a supernova.

MİLKWAY AND MAGELLAN NEBUL

Blackholes are born w th supernovas. They are only some black monsters and they eat

everth ng around them. Do they? No not actually. If they do, we can't see them because

there s a super blackhole n center of our galaxy as other galax es. If you are near to a

blackhole as a human you w ll be eaten by a blackhole n a second but we can't say the

same th ng for the stars. That’s about the phys cs and t s hard to expla n. A blackhole

can be as strong as the star was there. For example f you turn nto a blackhole wh le

read ng th s magaz ne, you can't even damage th s p ece of paper. I th nk you know why

blackhole s black; noth ng can escape from blackhole even l ght and l ght s the fastest

th ng we know. Maybe one day we w ll make a rocket that can escape from blackholes.

GAME OF BLACK & WHITE

Go s a bra n teaser. Go comes from As a. Rumour has t that, t was known as a game from

heaven. Imper als of Ch na used to play go and the pr nces had to know go too. Because go

mproves the way you th nk. Go makes you th nk n mult ple ways. You have to th nk your

moves but at the same t me you have to th nk the other player’s moves. The game

s played by two players or two groups of players. One of the player takes black and other

takes the wh te. If there s a level d fference between players, the lower level should take black.

Because t starts the game and t s really mportant move for the game. To equal ze the game,

the player who has taken wh te s g ven extra po nts at the end of the game (the po nts

depends on the s ze of the board). If players are equal they do n g r to select who s go ng to be

the black. Go starts w th an empty board. Players put the r stones by order.

The a m s hav ng b gger area than the other player.

So at the end of the game we count the spaces not the stones. And I want to add a fun fact the

term of atar comes from th s game. If the players’ have the same space, the v ew of the game

w ll look l ke the symbol of ’‘y n&yang’’. Go also make you more soc able person, for an

example n Turkey (mostly n colleges) there are tournaments. There s no age l m t so you can

meet someone from 7 to 70. I strongly bel eve that go makes you calmer person too. Thanks to

t, n the tournaments you can commun cate w th other people eas ly.
