THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY/BRITISH INSTITUTEOF ARCHAEOLOGY AT ANKARA SURVEY OFMEDIEVAL CASTLES OF ANATOLlAFlRST SEASON (1992): MASTAURA KALESİThe sur<strong>ve</strong>y of the medieval site at Mastaura kalesi was completedbetween 24th April and 28th May 1992. The team members were Dr.Mark Whittow, Hugh Bames, Antonia Blewett, and Niels Hooper. Weare extremely grateful to the Department of Arıtiquities for granting us apermit to carry out the work, and to Ahmet Bayram Uner from the TürkIslam Eserleri Müzesi in Bursa who represented the Department. Withouthis help and kindness we would ha<strong>ve</strong> achie<strong>ve</strong>d much less. Our warmthanks also to the villagers of Bozyurt and Eycelli, in paticular to ŞerifErdoğan, Hüseyin Ince and Mustafa Uzun who made us <strong>ve</strong>ry welcome.The site of Mastaura kalesi Hes 5 kilometres north-east of Nazilli inAydın ili, on a <strong>ve</strong>ry .steep sandstone hill o<strong>ve</strong>rlooking a valley runningsouth into the Büyük Menderes. In the valley 2 kilometres from the siteare the remains of the Roman and early Byzantine city of Mastaura, andits Ottoman successor, now the village of Bozyurt.Mastaura kalesi Hes about 240 metres abo<strong>ve</strong> the valley and extendso<strong>ve</strong>r three promentaries (see the plan and figs. 1 and 2). it consists of acastle on the plateau at the top, and a walled lower city which extendso<strong>ve</strong>r the three promentaries.The site is difficult to reach, co<strong>ve</strong>red with thick thom-bush and badlyeroded. The area at the top was clearly much larger in the past. In manyareas too the original ground le<strong>ve</strong>l has been washed away.The principle remains are the following:a. The castle walls (Fig. 3), including a gate and four towers. One ofthese, the south tower (Figs. 4 and 5), is well preser<strong>ve</strong>d.562
