A) CONE VlUAGESMany areas in the Cappadocian region are characterized by a landscapederi<strong>ve</strong>d fromfinal erosion morphologies which ha<strong>ve</strong> shaped thevo1canic deposit in <strong>ve</strong>ry large pinnac1es (isolated or in groups), called"peri pacalan" that is "fairy chimneys". Many of these pinnac1es ha<strong>ve</strong> 00­en digged inside artificially, to obtain dwellings, stores, and worship places.B) CLIFF WALL VILLAGESTheyare underground structures especially used for living in, diggedinside the leaning walls of the canyons. They constitute independentdwellings with superposed rooms. The c1iff dwellings are disposed on se<strong>ve</strong>ralfloors all placed abo<strong>ve</strong> the country le<strong>ve</strong>L. The road network is externalto the c1iff structures: its main lines follow the valley axes.C) ROCK CHURCHESTheyare Christian worship places, digged inside the single pinnac1esor the walls of natural amphitheatres. At Görerne there is a true monasticsettlement constituted by se<strong>ve</strong>ral rock churches, some of which finelyfrescoed.D) ROCK CASTLE VILLAGESThe rock castle villages are settlements digged into the high rock towerslike those of Ortahisar and Uçhisar. The underground rooms are de<strong>ve</strong>lopedon superposed le<strong>ve</strong>ls, reaching the top of the hill.E) ROCK TOMBSThere are many tombs, isolated or grouped, digged inside the rock.Some of them belong to the Hellenistic period.F) ROCK PIGEON-LOFTS. Suitable tower-shaped constructions are bui1t in many Middle Eastregıons.In Cappadocia, according to the characteristics of the landscape, thepigeon-Iofts ha<strong>ve</strong> been digged directly in the c1iffs. Theyare small-sized,but widely present in all the "erosion valleys, district". Theyare associatedwith underground and surfacesettlements but are mainly diffused inthe canyons, near the cultivated areas.48
