although we do not yet know the length of time over which this type ofpottery was made, its appearance at eighteen sites shows that occupationof Balboura's territory did not end in the seventh century, as previouslysupposed. it is not yet clear whether this later settlement was continousfrom the Early Byzantine period or areoccupation, but a single sherd ofConstantinopolitam white ware suggests that there must be locally mademiddle Byzantine pottery which we do not yet recognise These problemshighlight our general ignorance of Byzantine pottery in Lycia and thedependence of survey chronology on well studied material from carefulexcavations. The general assessment of the pottery from the westem Balbouratikesuggests that at most of the rural settlements (lO out of 15) sherds occupationranged from Hellenistic to Byzantine, with the others settlementsoccupied for more limited parts the same time span. The much scantierpottery from the enclosure sites was in two cases Hellenistic to early/midRoman in date, but in two others Iate Roman and Byzantine. This lattermaterial probably belonged to a period of re-use, since the masonry is almostcertainly Hellenistic rather than Late Roman. The Hellenistic and Roman pottery from most of the 27 sites sherdedin 1989 and 1991 (apart from the prehistoric material) was fully or partlystudied. The remaining pottery, together with that from the nine sitessherded in 1992, remains to be studied, and in addition a significantamount of drawing must be done. It is planned to complete this work afterthe final field season in 1993.Meanwhile the pottery from the city of Balboura is being preparedfor publication, and will be included in a forthcoming monograph on thecity. Studies of the East Tomb and Upper Theatre at Balboura will appearin Anatolian Studies 1993 and 1994.434
