weapons: a chisel, a knife blade, an arrowhead, a spearpoint, and a dagger(Fig. 11), pointing, like the selection from J/L, to hostilities behind this phase’sconflagration and abandonment 18 .PERIOD 15: Period 15 brickwork preserved its highest elevation underPeriod 14’s gravelled street, in the southern half of E/H. Wall lines wereexposed there in the 2007 campaign’s last week. They corresponded, in everyrespect, to those excavated nine years ago in J/L. The Period 15 building planand its monumental character were thus increased by ca. 100 m 2 , still as asingle structure (Fig. 12).This year’s new section of the Period 15 building, from its third andfinal stage, extended J/L’s western wall 147 to a total length of 21 m. It wasinterrupted by a 3-m wide stretch (668) paved with river stones to create threeshallow steps, and flanked on either side by a large, stone-lined posthole (diam= 0.40-0.50 m., depth = 0.65 m.) (Fig. 13). This stepped threshold, framed bytwo posts, follows the design for formal entrances that was typical of westernSyrian architecture, beginning in LB I 19 . The building’s north façade must thusbe located here. Behind it, a square room or porch 670 (3.4 x 4.8 m.), once ledinto rooms to the south. It was only excavated to a shallow depth, throughunburnt occupational fill, without reaching a floor or surface. However, findsfrom sealed fills in J/L already dated the building to the early centuries of theLate Bronze Age, at the time of the Hittite Old Kingdom 20 . The introductionof Hittite cultural material at Kinet can be associated with Hittite interests inCilicia and western Syria under the early Hittite kings.18 E.g. copper alloy dagger KNH-1639 [‘07 E/H 618 L. 1549], l = 29.8 cm. Traces of wood inlaysand adhesive are preserved in the recesses of the handle.19 The “bit hilani”: e.g., Alalakh IV’s “Niqme-pa Palace,” the citadel palace at Emar, andpublic buildings at Ugarit. The western posthole was sealed by four courses of mudbricks, forming the corner of wall 633 with wall 682 + J/L 147. The elimination of this post, andthe misalignment between gateway and porch, would represent modifications, in this thirdbuilding phase, to the façade’s original design. Similar changes were also evident in J/L’ssector, where removing the mudbrick superstructure showed the building’s original plan andhow this was modified.20 Gates 2006.358
