APHRODISIAS, 2007R.R.R. SMITH*In 2007, New York Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity’s research team carried out archaeologicalexcavation, documentation, and restoration at Aphrodisias from 4 July to 20August. Projects included: (1) new excavation and architectural recording,(2) site conservation, (3) sculpture study and documentation, (4) epigraphicrecording, (5) marble sculpture conservation, and (6) architectural anastylosis.Anastylosis and conservation remained focused on the Sebasteion and its reliefsin connection with the building of a new museum building that was underconstruction at the site in 2007. The go<strong>ve</strong>rnment representati<strong>ve</strong> was Azize Yener(Antalya Museum).1. Excavation and Architectural Recording (Figs. 1-3)Excavation and architectural recording, supervised by Peter de Staebler, wasconcentrated on the Atrium House, North Agora, and the City Wall.Atrium House. The Atrium House was a late antique mansion to the northof the Sebasteion, and new excavation was undertaken here to in<strong>ve</strong>stigatethe earlier phases and chronology of the house. The work was supervised byIan Lockey, who is making a full study of the Atrium House complex and itsexcavated contents. Se<strong>ve</strong>n trenches (AtrH 2007.1-7) were opened and found adense record of earlier material on the site back to the Hellenistic period andearlier (Fig. 2). The main dated material associated with earlier floors of thehouse, close under the existing floors, is of the first century A.D., and in onetrench (Atr.H. 2007.1) a coin of c. 40 B.C. was found under the foundations of oneof the main (exterior?) house walls. A new state plan of the house was made, aswell as sections through it. A study of the aedicular architecture of the apsidalfacade in the garden peristyle was begun.North Agora. A new trench was opened in the large chamber opening off thesoutheast corner of the North Agora, which was excavated in 2004.
