SALVAGE EXCAVATION REPORT FOR THESINAP FORMATION PROJECTİ/han TEMİZSOY *Berna ALPAGUTMikael FOR TELIUSJohn KAPPELMANINTRODUCTIONThe Sinap Formation Project was initiated as an internationl collaborativeeffort under the directorship of Prof. Berna Alpagut in 1989.During four field seasons ( 1989-1992) an extensive survey extendingover a wide area in the Ankara area was carried out, resulting in the discoveryof over 100 fossil localities and the recovery of over 2700 cataloguedfossils (Alpagut & Maıtin, 1991; Alpagut & Fortelius, 1992; AIpagutet aL., 1993; in press). Soundings taken at selected localities duringthe 1991 and 1992 field seasons revealed rich fossil occurences in situand provided microstratigraphical and sedimentological information, itwas also discovered that 111l1ch of the fossil material was in immediatedanger of destructiorı due to rapid erosion. The first salvage excavationswere commenced in 1993 under the directorship of Prof. ilhaı1 Temizsoy.This report summarises the exeavation activities and discusses their implicationsas far as the preliminary identifications allow.
