SURVEY REPORT FOR THE SINAPFORMATION PROJECTBerna ALPAGUT *Mikael FORTEUUSJohn KAPPELMANINTRODUCTIONThe Sinap Formatiorı Project was initiated as an international collaborativeeffort under the directorship of Prof. Berna Alpagut in 1989.During four field seasons (1989·1992) an extensive survey extendingover a wide area in the Ankara area was carried out, resulting in the discoveryof over 100 fossil localities and the recoveryof over 2700 cataloguedfossils (Alpagut & Martin, 1991; Alpagut & Fortelius, 1992; Alpagutet al., 1993; in press). Additional surveying and mapping effortswere undertaken in 1993. The salvage exeavation activities of the 1993field season are deseribed in a separate report (Temizsoy et al., these volumes).The background of the Sinap Project has been given in the previousreports cides above, and the main results up to the 1992 field season aresununarised by Kappelman et al (in press). Briefly, the later Miocene SinapFormation of the Arıkara region, Central Anatolia, has produced arich fossil fauna including important hominoid remains (Ozansoy, 1955,1957, 1965; Andrews & Tekkaya, 1980), but the chronological and palaeoecologicalcontexts of the fauna are not well understood.
