74■“Taylorism at home”: The rationalizion of houseworkin early Republican Turkey (1928-40)In Turkey of the 1920s and ’30s, there was a peculiar proliferation ofinterest in rationalized and ordered management of the home. In GirlsInstitutes, as well as women’s journals and everyday conversations, therewas particular interest in Taylorism, time and motion studies, and factorydiscipline as applied to home economics. This article exposes thismaterial, as it asks critical questions about the category of “modernity”.
