SUMMARY
Introduction: The studies on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic
disorder (PD) have reported high prevalence rates of mood disorders, but, comorbidity of
bipolar disorder that has gained increasing popularity recently, has not been well studied.
Besides, it is a matter of debate, if there is relationship of temperamental variables which
are thought to be developmental subways of bipolarity, in patients with comorbid anxiety
disorders.
Method: The aim of the study is to investigate the clinical and sociodemographic
features of the patients with OCD and PD in terms of the comorbidity of bipolar disorder
including affective temperamental variables. Forty-four and 42 patients with the
diagnosis of OCD and PD respectively, were included to the study. Patients were
assessed by interview with patients (SCID 1),
applying sociodemographic form,
Hamilton depression scale, Beck anxiety scale, Yale Brown OCD scale, Panic
agoraphobia scale and TEMPS-A affective temperament questionnaire.
Results: The results showed significantly higher rates of bipolar comorbidity
(especially bipolar II; % 11,6) in patients with OCD and PD (total % 15,1). Compared
with PD, the results for OCD was more significant (% 22,7 ≠ % 7,1; p=0,07). Patients
with antidepressant-induced mania/hypomania had similar clinical and sociodemographic
characteristics to the patients with comorbid bipolar disorder according to DSM IV
criteria. The rate of comorbid bipolarity increased to 26,7 % when both groups take into
account (OCD: 38,4 %; PD: 14,2 %; p=0,05).
