The main purpose of the current study was to examine the utility and<br />

effecti<strong>ve</strong>ness of fi<strong>ve</strong> stage model in one of the three dimensional environments<br />

called second life. To help meet the purpose, users recei<strong>ve</strong>d orientation, a work<br />

environment has been established, learning activities took place in this<br />

environment and the users’ views were recei<strong>ve</strong>d.<br />

Case study, a qualitati<strong>ve</strong> research method, was used in this study Through<br />

using diary, conducing interviews and making observations, data were analyzed in<br />

light of fi<strong>ve</strong> stage model. The participants were 19 pre-service teachers studying<br />

in Balikesir Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity-Necatibey Faculty of Education’s department of computer<br />

education and instructional technology in 2010-2011 academic year’s spring<br />

semester. The participation was voluntary. Diaries were examined through content<br />

analysis technique. Data obtained from this technique were supported from data<br />

gathered from observations.<br />

The findings re<strong>ve</strong>aled that the participants found the environment<br />

effecti<strong>ve</strong>, easy to use, and a place that enabled them to socialize and to express<br />

themsel<strong>ve</strong>s confidently. In addition, they constructed their own knowledge, and<br />

connected it with real life; therefore, they achie<strong>ve</strong>d all of the stages of fi<strong>ve</strong> stage<br />

model.<br />
