ENVIRONMENTAL ISOTOPIC INVESTIGATION OF TUNÇBILEK COAL MINE AREA<br />

ABSTRACT<br />

(TAVŞANLI-KÜTAHYA)<br />

This study is as a part of hydrogeological investigation to drain groundwater into the Ömerler<br />

underground coal mine which is operated by Western Lignite Corp. (GLİ). The hydrogeological<br />

investigation was performed for General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration in the<br />

name of Turkish Coal Corp. between 2004 to 2006.<br />

Different lithologic units from Paleozoic to Quaternary age are cropped out in the study area. The<br />

Paleozoic is represented by metamorphic rocks and Upper Cretaceous units are characterized by<br />

ultramafic rocks and mélange. Tertiary units are granite, basalt, limestone, marl, silt, sandstone,<br />

conglomerate and coal. Sandstone, conglomerate and limestone layers in Tertiary rocks are<br />

permeable, marls between coal layers are semi-permeable.<br />

δ 2 H, δ 18 O and 3 H isotope analyses were performed on samples collected from springs, monthly<br />

basis precipitation, stripped lakes and underground coal mine and only δ 34 S-SO4 and δ 18 O-SO4<br />

samples were collected high sulfate content underground coal mine, springs and stripped lakes.<br />

Local meteoric line was determined to have an equation of δ 2 H=8*δ 18 O+15.8. Most of the<br />

groundwater samples indicate that evaporation process has a dominant effect on the fresh<br />

groundwater in the basin. The groundwater emerging during the excavation in the underground coal<br />

mine was formed with mixture between the recent precipitation and thermal waters which were<br />

infiltrated under climate conditions colder than today.<br />

1. GİRİŞ<br />

İnceleme alanı, kuzeyde Gürgenyayla tepe ve Eğridere tepe, batıda Sarıot ve Bozbelen, güneyde<br />

Hamitabat köyü, doğuda ise Domaniçkozluca ve Domaniçkaraköy köyleri ile sınırlanmaktadır.<br />

Çalışma alanı yaklaşık 280 km 2 ‘dir. Tunçbilek, Kütahya’ya 60 km, Tavşanlı’ya ise 10 km<br />

uzaklıktadır (Şekil 1).<br />
