ibn-Ali and his companions is a sad day for all Muslims, especially the Shi’a,
who hold mourning ceremonies to recall their defense of Islam and the
righteous virtues for which they were killed. In fact, the greatest tragedy in
that event was that one who stood up for the noblest of causes, the defence of
Islam, was cut down in so cruel a manner. Thus, since Husain's revolution
was against the dictatorship, injustice and corruption of Umayyad regime, it
would be counted as a defensive one. For this reason the events that occurred
on the 10th day of Muharram in Kerbala were to become a beacon and an
inspiration for future generations.
6. Conclusion
In conclusion, as we have seen, since religion is a crucial factor to
secure peaceful world, as almost every war between the nations has involved
wrong religious education, we strongly need to have a true interpretation of
religious teachings. In this paper, I have shown that war in Islam is
prohibited except defensive war that is a reaction to aggression. I have also
argued that since Husain's revolution was against the dictatorship, injustice
and corruption of Umayyad regime, it would be counted as a defensive one.
As we have seen in this paper, there are many principles in Islamic
teachings that provide a foundation for creative peacemaking. Islam is a
religion of universalism, tolerance, peace, and reconciliation. Islamic
teachings attempt to invite people to global peace and a peaceful life on the
basis of theism, justice and piety. So, in Islam, peace is a primary law, and
war is exceptional that is a reaction to aggression. However, sometimes it is
misunderstood as a religion of violence; as the term of Jihad is frequently
misunderstood and misinterpreted. Likewise, the use of holy war in our time
is a distortion of the prophet's teachings. The responsibility is on intellectuals
to enlighten people to have better understanding of their faith in social
aspects.
