Description of the Relationship Between Lung Volume, Airway Resistance and the
Index of Apnea/Hipopnea
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is characterized as narrowing in the
upper bronchial tube repetitively or partially during sleep and reduction in the saturation
of oxygen in the blood. Openness of upper bronchial tube is determined by the balance
between the collapsing effect of negative intraluminal pressure taking place during
inspiration and the upper airway dilatator muscles’ activities. In this study we aimed at
describing the relationship among the lung volume, which is thought not to have a direct
effect in OSAS pathogenesis, airway resistance, and OSAS cases at various severity.
Our study has been conducted on 104 cases 26 (24.8 %) of which are female and
79 (75.2 %) male who were applied the polisomnography examination Department of
Chest Disease, Sureyyapasa Chest and Chest Surgery Training and Research Hospital,
between January 2008 and May 2008. The ages of the cases averaged out to
48.89±11.25, the BMI to 30.79±5.02, and the neck circumference to 41.73±3.93. 54.28
% of the cases weren’t diagnosed with any other diseases. 40.95% of the cases had
hypertension along with OSAS. 66.66% of them were smokers. The cases were divided
into 4 according to apnea/hipopnea index and 25.7% of them were diagnosed with
habitual snoring, 21.9% with mild OSAS, 22.9% with moderate OSAS, and 29.5 with
severe OSAS.
The patients, who filled in a form including personal information, BMI, neck
circumference, additional diseases, smoking history, Sleepiness Epworth Scale(ESS),
were applied Whole-body plethysmography measured lung volumes and airway
resistance were recorded according to predictive values.
In our study the expiratuar reserve volume (ERV) in severe OSAS group were
found to be lower than those of habitual snoring, mild OUSAS, and moderate OSAS
groups. No difference was found in terms of respiratory function tests, airway resistance
and lung volumes. While other features such as BMI and neck circumference were
found to be higher in the severe OSAS group, no differences were observed among the
groups in the Sleepiness Epworth Scale.
As a result, it is seen in our study that there OSAS severity is not affected by
airway resistance or lung volume.
