I N T R O D U C T I O N The Turkish National Bibliography includes indigenous publications with their descriptive cataloging information, received by the National Library according to the Legal Deposit Act dated 1934, numbered 2527. The National Bibliography was started by the Ministry of Education in 1928. In 1935, the responsibility of publishing the National Bibliography was undertaken by the Directorate of Legal Deposit. Since 1955 it has been published by the National Library. Materials are being catalogued according to the 2 nd edition of 1988 revision of the AACR (Anglo American Cataloguing Rules) and classified according to the 20 th edition of Dewey Decimal Classification System. All the bibliographical records prepared by the Cataloging and Classification Section, the Periodicals Section, and the Audio-Visual Materials Section are forwarded to the Bibliography Preparation Section. After necessary corrections and revisions the bibliography is published monthly. With the introduction of the automated procedures, Turkish National Bibliography's January 1989 issue was published. Since 1993 a new computer program is being utilized for the preparation of the bibliography. The new software has new innovative features in terms of form and content. Bibliographic records are listed according to types of materials under subjects which are shown below: 1. Books 2. Periodicals 3. Audio-Visual Materials During the organization of bibliographic records priority is given to subject numbers. Bibliographic entries which have same subject number are listed alphabetically. Subject numbers are shown at the end of each bibliographic entry. If a bibliographic entry includes two or three subjects numbers, they are also shown in each relevant subject category. The first subject number which appears at the upper left hand corner of the record is also the number which provides access to the bibliographic record through indexes. However, subject numbers are not shown in the referred bibliographic records. A work's stock number at the National Library appears at the upper right hand corner. At the end of each issue, there are five separate indexes which are: authors, corporate bodies, book titles, periodical titles, and ISBN and ISSN. In the annual indexes issue numbers are given with Roman numerals. It is important to note that the Turkish National Bibliography is the most important and the only publication for the national bibliographic control in the country. This has been achieved with careful preparations and new automated procedures. The Turkish National Bibliography has been produced in CD format and monthly since the begining of 2003. Furthermore, it is planned to be published annually together with annual index. PDF files of bibliographies have been included within the CDs in order to maintain the present system which the researchers familiar with. The whole VIII
I N T R O D U C T I O N data of an issue are included in the PDF file which are exactly the same as in printed bibliographies. It has been made easy to have access to bibliographic descriptions in CDs with a browse and search program prepared both in Turkish and English. The program has an indexing mechanism which provides five access points: -Title of the work -Name of the author -Name of the publisher -Series -Subject number. Entries in the index are listed in the alphabetical order and full record can be retrieved. Moreover, there are two different browse and search points: "search record", "search word". Through these points researchers can have quick access to the right record they need. Access to the bibliographic records from the annual author and article title indexes is possible via the fascicle number and the subject order number denoted next to the subject number in parentheses.
