LOCATION AND FACILITIES 

The Institute for Education is located in the limits of Pembroke, overlooking the sea and 

the Madliena Tower. The entire building enjoys notable nature views and is considerably 

far from any other buildings, creating a calm and quiet environment for your learning 

experience. There is parking around the building as well as further up, and it has a bus 

stop (Luther) located exactly outside its doors. 

The IfE premises offer numerous facilities to its course participants, including: 

• Classrooms with different set-ups and equipment for whatever a session might require 

• Wheelchair access to the building 

• Various restrooms throughout the building 

• A cafeteria with food and beverage vending machines 

• A breakroom with sofas and chairs 

• A multi-faith room 

• A counselling room 

• Ample outside seating and space 

The entire premises are also strictly non-smoking.

The premises make it possible for our lecturers to be creative in how 

they deliver their sessions, such as the case of applying outdoor 

learning. Certain sessions are, however, also delivered in other venues 

and schools which we are in partnership with. These include St Clare 

College Secondary School (Pembroke), St Ignatius College Secondary 

School (Qormi), St Nicholas College Middle School (Rabat), St Theresa 

College Middle School (Birkirkara), the Marsa Sport Complex (Marsa), 

National Sports School (Pembroke), The Malta College of Arts, Science 

and Technology (MCAST), Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS), National 

Literacy Agency (NLA) and Esplora Interactive Science Centre. 

Considering their size and location, the IfE premises are an ideal space for 

events and are, in fact, the venue for a number of activities which the IfE 

organises throughout the year.

2020 was the year of the COVID-19 global 

pandemic. 2021 was the year we believed 

we would overcome it, but this proved to 

be more challenging than expected. 2022 

is different from any other year since a lot 

of energy has been invested in facing the 

tough situations, adopting initiatives that 

helped us continue with our endeavours and 

adjusting to new ways of living. So, what is 

the way forward? What are our expectations 

for the months to come? 

MESSAGE 

FROM 

THE CEO 

Upon reflection of what has worked, 

what did not, what stressed us out and 

what pushed us forward, I realised that 

my personal beliefs about the strengths 

and weaknesses, the challenges and 

opportunities started to fluctuate along 

the way. A perceived weakness started to 

transform into a strength along the months, 

while a perceived strength proved to require 

more input when things started to become 

more challenging. Working hard is very 

important, but being smart is key and to 

achieve this, one must literally stop and 

reflect. Scheduling time to look back and 

evaluate systems, decisions, processes, 

outcomes to then enhance them helped 

us grow as a team and as an institution 

and thus, this is a practice that has to be 

continued. 

As an educational institution that offers 

courses to educators, there was a total

shift to online learning. We had advocated 

the importance of this modality way before 

the pandemic struck and thus, the Institute 

for Education was well prepared when this 

transformed from a luxury to a necessity. 

The synchronous and asynchronous 

sessions proved to be the way forward, and 

in fact, the number of educators accessing 

professional development soared. So now, 

after two years of online learning, the need 

to relearn and appreciate the importance of 

how to get together in person, experience 

learning in the same room and collaborate 

face to face, is being felt. Collaboration can 

certainly happen online but face to face 

discussions, debates, presentations and 

workshops help us develop humanistic skills 

that cannot happen online, and we must 

ensure that these are not lost. Building 

meaningful connections demonstrates that 

we value the persons and their experiences. 

Considering this, the Institute for 

Education is emphasising the importance 

of the balance between synchronous, 

asynchronous and face to face sessions 

as this blended approach has proven to be 

the most satisfying in every aspect, being 

effectiveness of learning, accessibility and 

flexibility. 

I cannot stress enough the resiliency 

required to read for a qualification or 

continue to develop professionally and to 

swiftly adapt to the different situations as 

we were all required to do during the past 

two years. Nonetheless, mental health and 

wellness need to remain at the top of the 

agenda of this educational institution since 

emotional well-being is a prerequisite for 

learning to happen. 

Finally, the Institute for Education’s main aim 

is to provide the best possible educational 

experience for educators so that there can 

be a transfer of this love for learning 

to the younger generation. We 

intend to continue in our 

endeavour of removing 

barriers while maintaining 

high expectations from 

our course participants. 

We believe that to 

nurture future active 

citizens, who are capable 

of adapting according to 

the changes they will face 

throughout their journey, we 

need to have high quality resilient 

educators. The Institute for Education 

will be there to support this truly equitable 

learning experience.

ABOUT THE 

INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATION

The IfE was originally set up in April 2015 by virtue 

of Legal Notice 140 of 2015, as amended by Legal 

Notice 240 of 2015. The IfE was reconstituted as 

an agency by virtue of Legal Notice 243 of 2017. 

The IfE provides initial teacher training and 

professional development that foster 21stcentury 

skills as well as competences in 

educators at all levels, whilst also infusing equity 

and social justice within all programmes. It offers 

accredited/non-accredited programmes which 

are flexible and can be delivered through various 

modes, such as face-to-face, online and blended 

learning. 

The IfE is vested with the capacity to provide 

qualifications and continuous professional 

education to all educators who recognise the 

need to keep improving their competencies 

in order to remain relevant in this perpetually 

evolving globalised and digital world. It also 

boasts that it has developed the whole pathway 

through the qualifications offered to create the 

professional teacher. In so doing, it has elevated 

the teaching status since supply teachers at any 

level can now find the pathway that suits them 

according to their present qualifications, apply 

for the right qualification, and be eligible for 

the position of regular teacher upon successful 

completion of their studies. Furthermore, as part 

of the IfE’s vision in promoting education for all, 

a number of non-accredited programmes tailormade 

for parents, teachers, LSEs, KGEs, Heads, 

and Assistant Heads of School are also offered. 

The IfE is licenced by the Malta Further and Higher 

Education Authority (MFHEA) as a Further and 

Higher Education Institution in accordance with 

the second schedule of Subsidiary Legislation 

327.433.

WHY CHOOSE THE 

INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATION? 

The IfE welcomes all individuals who are 

interested in contributing towards the 

development of education by encouraging 

educators to explore fresh approaches 

towards their professional growth. Such 

educators drive positive change and 

explore methodologies aimed at increasing 

impact on the students’ learning experience. 

Course participants at the IfE also have the 

opportunity to reflect on learning, set goals, 

provide evidence of learning, give and receive 

feedback, co-teach, analyse performances, 

and improve practice through selfassessment. 

At the IfE, course participants 

will experience a personalised approach 

as the IfE firmly believes that by imparting 

a stimulating experience that enriches the 

educator, the educators will, in turn, transfer 

this approach to the students at school. 

IfE offers accredited programmes at MQF 

levels 4 – 7, which are targeted at individuals 

who are interested in pursuing a career 

in education. These programmes offer 

a different learning experience to course 

participants as they are delivered through 

a mixture of face-to-face sessions, 

online and blended teaching 

approaches. The IfE fosters an environment 

which is conducive to learning through its 

supportive policies and procedures. The 

programmes offered by the IfE are designed 

in a manner which add value to individuals 

who are passionate about children’s 

learning and the education sector. 

The IfE is equipped with all the required 

learning facilities and resources. The IfE 

boasts of a portal which provides tools and 

resources to course participants. Within its 

interface, the portal has an integrated video 

conferencing tool – Blackboard Collaborate 

– and a comprehensive virtual library 

through which a vast range of journals, eBooks

and other academic documentation can be 

accessed. The IfE is also equipped with a 

physical library, wireless internet 

access, interactive whiteboards 

and video conferencing equipment 

which are available in each lecture room. The 

IfE’s facilities are constructed and maintained 

in accordance with legal requirements 

to ensure access, safety, security, and a 

healthy environment with consideration for 

environmental and ecological concerns. 

Prospective students are to note that the 

Teaching Profession is regulated; therefore, 

access to the profession is granted by a 

warrant which is issued by the Council for 

the Teaching Profession.

WE INVEST IN YOUR WELL-BEING 

The Student Affairs Office serves as an 

essential focal point within the Admissions 

Department. This office aims to create a 

sense of community that supports 

our Course Participants in their professional 

and personal growth by acting as the goto 

reference point for academic and 

emotional support. Mental well-being, 

self-awareness, personal growth, and 

work-life-study balance are the key guiding 

principles on which this office operates. In 

line with this, this office promotes and guides 

course participants to our various student 

friendly policies and procedures 

such as leave of absence, recognition of 

prior learning, extenuating circumstances, 

and requests for academic records amongst 

others. 

One of the missions of the Student Affairs 

Office is to give a voice to all Course 

Participants by welcoming new ideas 

and suggestions that would enhance 

the overall academic experience whilst 

helping the IfE develop towards providing 

an excellent learning journey to all. This 

office coordinates the Course Participant 

Representatives Elections through which 

the Course Participant Representatives 

Committee (CPRC) is formed. This committee 

is composed of several representatives from 

undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts 

who are selected through a self-nomination 

/ election process. This channel gives the 

space and opportunity through which course 

participants can highlight issues of concern 

and provide constructive feedback for further 

development. The Committee supports the 

Admissions Department in organising events 

and activities with the aim of creating an 

interesting and fun campus experience.

CAREER PROSPECTS 

Career prospects, up-skilling, professional 

development, and progression are key 

thought processes that one goes through 

when considering following an award or a 

qualification programme. Starting from our 

accredited awards, these provide educators 

with the opportunity to enhance their skills and 

competences to deliver a more comprehensive 

learning experience to students. As part of our 

mission to enrich the portfolio of awards being 

offered and enable our course participants to 

get a taste of international expertise, we have 

partnered with the University of Helsinki to 

offer a selection of awards that cover specific 

topics. Some of the awards may also be a 

pre-requisite to apply for certain employment 

positions and may contribute towards the 

accelerated progression scheme. 

Our Bachelor of Education and Master of 

Education Programmes are both initial teacher 

training programmes that provide an excellent 

opportunity for supply teachers to invest 

in the necessary pedagogical knowledge 

in primary or secondary/VET areas. These 

also provide an opening to those wishing to 

join the educational sector and invest in a 

teaching career. On successful completion of 

the Bachelor qualification (MQF Level 6) or a 

Postgraduate Diploma (MQF Level 7), one may 

have the opportunity to apply for a regular 

teaching position, although this may not be 

the only requirement for employment. Our 

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (MQF 

Level 7) conversion programmes give the 

opportunity to qualified educators wishing to 

teach in another subject area other than the 

one they are qualified to teach. 

Based on the Digital Competence Framework 

for Educators (DigCompEdu), the Institute 

for Education is offering the Postgraduate 

Certificate in Digital Competences for 

Education (MQF Level 7). This qualification 

programme is the perfect path for those 

working within the education profession 

who wish to upgrade their digital skills and 

competencies in the area of digital literacies, 

specifically on digital technologies that can be 

used to enhance and innovate education and 

training. 

Our first programme in Early Years is a jointdegree 

programme that enables Early Years 

Educators who already hold a higher national 

diploma in the area to top-up their qualification 

to further develop their competences and 

acquire a bachelor’s degree. This Bachelor of

Arts (Hons) Early Years, Learning and Care 

offered jointly with MCAST, is the perfect 

stepping stone for early years educators 

to grow and progress in their professional 

career. 

One may consider taking their career a 

step further and invest in our signature 

Master in Applied Educational Leadership 

programme which is the perfect platform 

for anyone wishing to explore a career in 

educational leadership, particularly within 

school management. The Institute for 

Education has widened its portfolio and is 

also offering a Master in STEM Education 

and Engagement which is targeted towards 

those who wish to further enhance their 

knowledge in the area of STEM education 

by focusing on engaging and educating the 

public about these subjects.

TESTIMONIALS 

I’ve been working at Esplora Interactive Science 

Centre for the past six years and my knowledge 

about science communication has been an 

amalgamation of job shadowing opportunities, 

training workshops, first-hand experiences 

and self-learning. It now seemed the perfect 

moment to read for an MSc in STEM Education 

and Engagement, and to take the time for a 

more in-depth exploration of current evidencebased 

approaches to science communication 

and public engagement practices. Moreover, I 

was looking forward to meeting and learning 

from local science communicators who have 

been working in the field for a longer time 

period, and who have more experience in 

public engagement. The first three months 

have been challenging, and I will admit that 

it’s taking longer than expected to acclimatise 

myself to the studying hours required in a 

Master of Science. Having a combination of 

asynchronous, online and physical lectures 

has made it a bit easier to juggle work, life and 

studying. I would recommend the course to 

students and scientists interested in learning 

how to better communicate their work to a 

wider audience.

I have had the gift and the privilege of working 

in the field of education for more than a 

decade. It’s a vocation that has given me the 

opportunity to make a difference in the lives 

of young people and throughout the process, I 

have learned and been inspired by students. I’m 

also a lifelong learner, and one of my ambitions 

has consistently been to pursue my education 

on a more authentic and in-depth level. This 

happened when I enrolled in the Institute for 

Education’s Masters in Applied Educational 

Leadership program. 

The lecturers were approachable and always 

willing to assist me with any questions I 

had; they gave me detailed constructive 

feedback and encouraged me to do my best. 

Furthermore, I gained information not just 

by reading books and papers, but also by 

participating in relevant group discussions in 

challenging settings. But what stood out to me 

the most was the focus on reflections which 

helped me to self-grow and become a better 

leader. 

Fast forward three years and I presently occupy 

a new position as a Media Literacy Education 

Officer. Throughout the course, I acquired 

valuable knowledge, competencies and 

skills about different aspects of Educational 

Leadership such as Human Resources 

Management, quality assurance, lesson 

observations, Communication and Problemsolving 

Competencies that are helping me in 

the new role. 

I embarked on this bachelor’s degree four years 

ago. The IfE has given me the opportunity to 

study part-time while having a full-time job as a 

primary educator. This degree is truly a handson 

experience. I can literally put into practice 

what I learn during the lectures the next day 

with my students. Whilst reading for this 

degree, my career development has evolved 

onto another level. I feel that this degree is 

giving me all that I need to become a complete 

teacher. The lecturers at the IfE are always there 

to provide us with the right tools and to make 

our journey as fruitful as possible. They are 

always ready to support us and go out of their 

way. The relationship between us students 

and the lecturers at the IfE is one of sharing 

knowledge and experiences rather than a 

teacher-centred structure. The course demands 

a lot of commitment, and the road is not an 

easy one but now that I am getting closer to 

the end, I feel that this journey has given me 

much more than I had expected. I strongly 

believe that choosing to do this degree with 

the IfE has been the right decision.

I have found the IfE Introductory Course for 

Supply Teachers most inspiring, entertaining 

and informative. It directed me in how 

to coordinate teaching activities in the 

classroom environment and to productively 

engage students in their learning process. 

Moreover, the course made me aware of 

different teaching methods and how these 

can be effectively adopted according to the 

student’s needs and expectations. This course 

offered me the tools to better my skills in a 

wide spectrum of teaching techniques which 

included pedagogy, student engagement, 

assessment and high-quality education for 

all. This whole experience proved to be very 

fruitful both in an academic and personal level. 

I highly recommend my colleagues to take up 

this course to better one’s teaching profession. 

This course was truly a motivational opening to 

further my studies in the journey of Education. 

I am a KGE, a mother and a wife. When I 

decided to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts 

(Hons) Early Years, Learning & Care – Top-up 

2022/2023 degree, I never knew how flexible, 

understanding and practical this course was 

going to be. My life is busy; however, there 

is a right balance between what I can do in 

my personal life, my work load and now my 

lectures, including assignments. The hybrid 

lessons are perfect because it gives me 

time to network and collaborate with other 

participants while also balancing my family’s 

needs and the comfort of working from home. 

The experience so far has been none other 

than a blessing and I am enjoying learning new 

skills/strategies, sharing my own knowledge 

and building what I already know in the Early 

Years field. This collaboration between the 

Institute for Education and Mcast has given 

me an opportunity to grow in my professional 

development as I now feel more valued as a 

KGE and I can progress in my profession. The 

support is endless and the online portal is 

very user friendly with a range of free online 

sources, giving me easier access to further 

my readings and gain more information about 

each different module. Upon my application, 

I was hesitant about whether I’d made the 

right choice but now I am truly happy that I 

didn’t decline my chances as I am enjoying the 

process of this experience and looking forward 

for what is next with plenty of positivity.

Upon embarking on my Master of Education 

journey at the Institute for Education, I realised 

that there are various perspectives through 

which an educator might decide to approach 

life within the classroom. The study-units 

offered do not merely present the students 

with previously established concepts which 

they are then expected to reproduce for the 

sake of assessment. Rather, lecturers offered 

insights into ideologies which we could 

then opt to explore further whilst adapting 

the material to our respective areas. The 

course promotes intuitiveness into current 

concepts such as interculturalism and the 

manner in which such concepts affect the 

way in which we deliver our lessons. Despite 

the exciting content, there were occasions 

when the demanding nature of reading for a 

master’s degree whilst working full-time were 

densely felt, particularly during a pandemic. 

Graduation thus brings with it a mixture of 

emotions. Excitement, pride, and gratefulness 

are undoubtedly accompanied by a feeling 

of relief – we all truly deserve a pat on the 

shoulder for overcoming all adversities and 

achieving this goal. This would not have been 

possible without the support offered by 

several individuals working at the IfE whose 

response and understanding were pertinent for 

sustaining our effort and perseverance levels 

throughout the past three years. I am glad 

that this journey is not merely another letter 

to add to our names but an affirmation of our 

capabilities – we are not in class to instruct but 

to guide the younger generations and grow as 

professionals while we learn from them. 

Two things contributed to the choice of 

teaching as my career: my passion for learning 

and the enthusiasm of working with children. 

After I finished my Bachelors of Education, the 

desire to get to know more about education 

and the ways I can help my students reach their 

full potential, got bigger. This led me to apply 

to various stand-alone courses at the Institute 

for Education. The courses were current, 

relevant and challenging, and provided me with 

the opportunity to broaden my knowledge 

and experiences in various fields. I cannot 

overstate the importance of the IfE’s standalone 

modules as they are surely an investment 

in one’s career.

MICRO- 

PLACEMENTS 

IN INDUSTRY 

The Institute for Education is offering Micro- 

Placements within the industry. The uniqueness 

of this concept is that the Micro-Placement 

modules are integrated within qualifications that 

are targeted towards initial teachers’ training 

and specialisation in education. We seek to build 

a stronger bridge between the education sector 

and the world of work through this initiative. 

The Micro-Placement Modules are found in two 

qualifications offered by the Institute: 

• Within the Bachelor of Education, the Micro- 

Placement module carries six (6) ECTs with 

90 hours of hands-on training 

• Within the Master of Education or the 

Postgraduate Certificate in Education 

(Conversion), the module carries ten (10) 

ECTs, having 180 hours of hands-on training

Are you over the age of 23 and interested in applying for our Bachelor 

programme? Then the maturity clause might interest you. 

What requirements do I need to satisfy 

to be considered as a mature participant? 

This clause permits an applicant who satisfies the 

following conditions to apply for consideration to 

participate in a course as a mature student. Apart 

from any additional eligibility requirements, the 

candidate must, at a minimum:

Certificate or Secondary School Certificate

What is RPL? 

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a 

formalised process through which credit may 

be awarded for learning undertaken prior to the 

commencement of a course offered by the IfE 

or learning completed together with, but not 

as part of the IfE course for which a prospective 

course participant has applied or is registered. 

What are the pros of RPL? 

RPL avoids duplication of previous learning, 

whilst ensuring that credit is only awarded when 

strong evidence is presented of successful 

achievement of the learning outcomes applicable 

to the level and content of the award for which 

the learner has applied or is registered.

The IfE welcomes applications from worldwide learners. For the purpose of admissions, applicants 

from EU and EEA countries are considered as nationals. Learners from countries outside EU/EEA/ 

Home are classified as international applicants. International course participants who intend to move 

to Malta for study reasons, for the duration of the programme, require an authorisation from Identity 

Malta in order to be able to study locally. 

Language Requirements 

For Bachelor programmes, apart from the set 

entry requirements for each course, international 

students are required to demonstrate English

Through this programme, participants will be given the opportunity to develop their 

understanding of ways in which cognitive neuroscience can inform their decisions to

course first explores what motivates or constrains people to migrate as well as the links 

between migration and sustainable development. This leads to the impact migration 

has on the host society, particularly on schools. This course then sequentially moves

in which it can be addressed. Exclusion, assimilation, accommodation, integration, 

and politics of difference as multiculturalism are explored.

In collaboration with the University of Helsinki, the Institute offers educators the 

opportunity to benefit from the expertise of other education systems. In this 8-week 

asynchronous course, course participants will follow a self-paced courses. Through 

this course on the Psychology of Development and Learning, course participants will 

cover: 

• learning from the perspectives of educational psychology and 

learning research; 

• the comprehensiveness and importance of learning and 

development in the framework of education and schooling;

this course on Broad-based Competencies and Phenomenon-based Projects, course 

participants will cover: 

• basic information on broad-based skills according to Finnish 

curricula in primary schools and thematic areas in upper secondary 

schools; 

• how different research-based methods support learning and how 

broad-based knowledge can be promoted; 

• how to to plan and direct phenomenon-based projects in 

collaboration with other teachers’ knowledge of different social, 

digital and physical learning environments;

TEACHING PRACTICE 

Teaching Practice is a vital component of initial teacher training programmes 

as it provides an opportunity for the learners to put theory into practice and to 

self-reflect on teaching and assessment methods employed in the classroom. 

Furthermore, this module is an integral part of the programme which will also 

contribute towards partially fulfilling the requirements outlined by the Council 

for the Teaching Profession with respect to applications for a teacher’s warrant.

When and where do Teaching Practices take place? 

Teaching Practice placements take place in a compulsory education setting 

during conventional school hours. Participants are expected to remain on 

the school grounds for the entire school day throughout the whole teaching 

practice period. 

Participants employed outside of the educational sector need to make the 

necessary vacation leave arrangements to ensure that they are available for the 

whole duration of the teaching practice period. It is to be noted that although 

teaching practice placements fall within different academic years, two (2) 

teaching practice placements might fall within one (1) calendar year. Depending 

on the programme followed, this could mean a total of fifteen (15) weeks. 

The IfE is not responsible for any remuneration offered to participants during 

the teaching practice period. Any applicable remuneration is offered at the 

discretion of the employer. Course participants are encouraged to enquire with 

their employer in this regard.

Supply Teachers programme? 

The Introductory Course for Supply Teachers includes one (1) teaching practice of six (6) 

weeks generally held between November – December. 

How long is a teaching practice on the Introduction to Supporting 

Learners with Individual Educational Needs (Award)? 

The Award, An Introduction to Supporting Learners with Individual Educational Needs, 

includes one (1) practicum of six (6) weeks. The practicum for those following the January 

– June Programme takes place between March and May. The practicum for those following 

the June – December Programme takes place between November and December. 

How is the Teaching Practice assessed? 

This component is assessed by teaching practice visitors who conduct classroom observations 

and support your development further through feedback and recommendations on 

practice. You will also be assessed on a Teaching Practice file, which needs to be kept up-todate 

throughout the period.

IfE premises in Pembroke, showcasing the 

talents of our participants. 

The IfE also believes that it is important 

that our country’s educators are not only 

educating our children in their fields but are 

also exposed to unconventional topics that 

may indirectly affect the development of 

their students. It is for this reason that we 

have worked on creating a diverse calendar 

of events which incorporates both academic 

and social activities that seek to enhance 

your learning journey with the IfE. 

Il-Klikka tal-Klassi is a biannual social event, 

whereby we will be discussing some engaging 

topics together with the help of a panel of 

expert guest speakers. The event aims to 

engage participants in important topics 

which are outside the educational curriculum 

and which shape the way our children are 

educated and brought up. This event is also 

intended to boost the 

sense of collegiality within 

the IfE, acting as a social 

event during which one can 

network whilst becoming 

familiar with the Institute 

for Education.
