After studying and working abroad for quite a few years, Yo
Fujiso, is back in France where he has just started his PhD on
human voice mechanism. Tofsen has met him to talk about
his international experiences, particularly the years spent at
Chalmers.
Can you describe your studies before you came to
Chalmers, did you have any international experience?
-I started my studies back in 2002 in my hometown Paris,
France, preparing for competitive
entrance examinations to selective
French engineering schools. In 2004 I
was admitted to one of these schools,
the ENSIAME, which is located in
Valenciennes (Northern France). At this
school, I took various courses related to
mechanical engineering and fluid mechanics.
In 2006, I did a 5-month internship
in a very small German town called Wiehl (near Cologne)
at a German company manufacturing axles for trucks. This
was my first international study experience. In the spring
of 2007, still at the ENSIAME, I took a basic course in
acoustics. Being a musician (I play the piano, drums and
guitar), I found the things I learnt in this course very interesting.
Acoustics was completely new to me and I decided
to improve my knowledge of it.
why did you choose to come to Chalmers?
-The first time I visited Gothenburg was during a week in
April 2007 and I instantly enjoyed the city. Shortly afterwards,
I applied to come to Chalmers as an exchange student
on the International Master’s Program in Sound and
Vibration for the 2007 fall semester. Although I was supposed
to stay for only one semester at Chalmers, I ended
up completing the entire curriculum (including 3 academic
semesters, with one semester to complete my Master’s
thesis) in order to obtain two Master’s degrees (one French
and one Swedish) instead of one.
what are your most prominent memories from your
time at Chalmers?
-I have so many good memories! The strongest ones,
however, would include the gigs I participated in as a drummer
during some the Chalmers events (e.g. Nollrock 2007
and pub crawls in Gasquen). Off-campus, I enjoyed having a
3-month summer job in 2008, at Volvo Car’s Aerodynamics
Department, at the Torslanda factory. One of my colleagues
there, who had a pilot’s license, offered me a trip in his
small plane and we flew across Gothenburg! That was really
awesome. Finally, I loved the Swedish celebration of spring,
known as Valborg, with barbecue parties in Slottskogen and
at Saltholmen.
what did you do after graduation?
-First I would like to mention my Master’s thesis, which
I completed in 2009, at a laboratory in Paris called
My dream is to conduct
underwater acoustics
research focused on
marine animals
Lutherie Acoustique Musique (Instrument making- Acoustics-Music).
At the laboratory I conducted research in specialized
musical acoustics and the vibrotactile acoustics of
an electric guitar. After graduation from Chalmers in September
2009, I moved to Tokyo, Japan, in order to work for
8 months at a Japanese acoustic consultancy company called
Nagata Acoustics. The company is specialized in the acoustical
design of concert halls for orchestral music and other
venues. Tokyo is an extraordinary city, with so many things
to do and see, yet life can sometimes be
tiring there, due to the gigantic size of
the city. It is an overcrowded place and
there is an almost constant noise. I came
back to France this summer and started
writing my PhD thesis in aero acoustical
modeling of the human upper airways in
October this year.
what skills from your Chalmers experience have been
the most useful to you in your career?
I developed skills in team work and learnt how to use laboratory
equipment.
Do you have any visions for the future?
My dream is to conduct underwater acoustics research
focused on marine animals like whales and sharks since these
animals fascinate me. Otherwise I would like to work in
the music industry.
