KÅRSIDORNAInternational officerSigns of springWhen I was a child we used tocelebrate Easter by dressing up likeEaster witches and going aroundthe village asking for candy fromthe neighbours. My two youngerbrothers and I had colourful scarveson our head, big skirts and aprons. Our mother painted our cheeksred and put freckles on our noses. In our hands we had broomsticksand copper coffeepots to keep thecollected candy in.My closest neighbours lived akilometre away, and since my youngestbrother was too young to keep upwith our eager walk, I had to pull himin a cart behind us. The frost in theground would just be staring to let goof the gravel road, making the pullingof my brother quite arduous.Around this time of year, my fatherused to take down trees in our forest. This sent out a subtle smell of resin, bark and sawdust, a smell that hasbeen recorded in my mind as a certainsign of spring. If we spotted a Tussilago in the ditchon our way, we would stop to pick thepoor flower that had just managed tocrawl up from the ground, hopingthat bearing flowers would render usmore candy. Our elderly neighbours used tostand in their windows looking forus when we came, they had preparedsome fika, and perhaps even a littlegift of five Swedish crowns to put inour coffee pots. It seems like a lot ofwork for five crowns, but this is oneof my dearest childhood memories.Uppsala studentkårOf course, there was also the thrillingegg hunt. Our mother woke us upearly and gave us instructions; shewould tell us only in which buildingof the farm she had hidden the eggs, not more.In the afternoon our grandmotherwould come over to have Easterdinner with us, and every year wegot equally disappointed when weopened the heavy Easter eggs she hadgotten us.We were hoping for lusciouschocolate and bonbons, big lollipopsand chewing gum to blow stickybubbles with. But the fact that theeggs were so heavy was becauseshe had put an orange in them. Mygrandmother always said we were aspoilt and ungrateful generation.Tel: 018–480 31 00reception@us.uu.seÖvre Slottsgatan 7,753 10 UppsalaHör av dig till oss så slussar vidig vidare till rätt person!Öppet:mån-ons kl. 9–17,tors 9–18,fre 9–16www.uppsalastudentkar.nuFoto: Maria ArpeKarin NordlundInternatinal officerUppsala student union
