1. Validation
The syllabus was validated on 2010-xx-xx by the Faculty Board at
Södertörns högskola according to the stipulations in the Higher
Education Ordinance, chapter 6, 7§.
2. Entry requirements
Acceptance on a PhD programme at Södertörn University.
3. Learning outcomes
Having taken the course, doctoral students are expected, first, to be
able to identify and critically appraise major theoretical traditions
within political science. Second, they should have deepened their
knowledge of specific areas of political-science theory and, moreover,
some particular problems within these.
4. Course contents
The aim of the course is to offer an overview of the fields of political
theory that can be described primarily in terms of constructivism and
critical realism. The underlying connection to normative theory will be
taken up, but not to any great extent. A distinction is also made
between political theory and political-science theory. The former
poses fundamental ontological and epistemological questions about
the place, forms and driving forces of politics and the state. The latter
develops theories – necessarily directed at particular sub-fields – of
