4. Course contents, modules and examinations
The course shows how the search for and production of knowledge
and truth are surrounded by critical questions concerning the very
conditions of its possibility. The course presents some of the
important positions taken in this debate, including Phenomenology
and Hermeneutics, Genealogy and Discourse Analysis, the Sociology
of Knowledge, Science- and Technology Studies, the Feminist Critique
of Science and the Postcolonial Critique of Science.
The principal objective of the course is to give students an advanced
introduction to some of the most important original writers and
positions in the field of the theory of science and knowledge. The
course is centered around the conflict between so-called relativism
and objectivism, also sometimes known as constructivism and anticonstructivism,
respectively. The course is directed primarily towards
the human and social sciences, but it also touches upon the question
of the relation between natural and human sciences. It is not
primarily a course in scientific methods. Its purpose is to increase
knowledge and awareness of how and why the very field of scientific
practice should be theoretically described and interpreted.
5. Course design
The course consists of lectures and seminars. Examination consists of a
midterm and a final paper.
6. Course assessment
Examination: Essay 7,5 ECTS credits
7. Restrictions on accreditation
The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents
are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden
or elsewhere.
