Finances<br />
Helsinki Cultural Office spent 8,752,607 euros on its<br />
activities. The sum of 871,208 euros accrued in income.<br />
Depreciation paid totalled 1,447,821 euros. The operating<br />
deficit was 7,881,399 euros. Helsinki Cultural Office<br />
received a total of 16,500 euros in external income for its<br />
activities.<br />
The Savoy unit’s operating expenses were 1,671,447<br />
euros. The sum of 692,321 euros accrued in income.<br />
Depreciation paid totalled 159,480 euros. The operating<br />
deficit was 979,126 euros.<br />
The operating expenses of the International Cultural<br />
Centre Caisa were 672,214 euros. The sum of 17,065 euros<br />
accrued in income. Depreciation paid totalled 14,217 euros.<br />
The operating deficit was 655,149 euros.<br />
Projects<br />
The ESR Helsinki Employment/Open Learning Centre<br />
project continued for the second year at the International<br />
Cultural Centre Caisa. It is a three-year, administrative<br />
project supporting orientation for immigrants. Of the<br />
project’s appropriation of 588,000 euros, 484,064 euros was<br />
spent.<br />

programme project entitled “Neighbourhood Art”.<br />
Expenditure on the project amounted to 116,040 euros<br />
of the appropriation.<br />
The URBAN II community initiative programme<br />
project URBAN Culture got under way in the Urban<br />
Culture Unit during the autumn. The expenditure on the<br />
EU project, which is comprised of eight different<br />
cultural schemes, amounted to 217,703 euros of the<br />
appropriation.<br />
Healthy and Safe City Board support in 2001 – 2002<br />
helped to implement over twenty pilot schemes for research<br />
into culture’s social aspects impacting the<br />
wellbeing of communities. The expenditure on this<br />
project amounted to 11,366 euros.<br />
Continuation projects from the Year of Culture<br />
involved expenditure of 66,741 euros of the appropriation.<br />
The actual expenditure on the Bravo! children’s festival<br />
totalled 36,742 euros. The actual expenditure on art<br />
wagons was 13,272 euros. The actual costs of the Story<br />
Roads project, which presented the fascinating world of<br />
museums, were 13,292 euros. The Artists and Researchers<br />
in Schools project’s expenditure amounted to 3,435 euros.<br />
The Energy from Learning project for a development<br />
network between city districts in the Helsinki Metropolitan<br />
Area 2002 – 2005 was started in the Urban Culture<br />
Unit during the autumn. The administration and financing<br />
of the project during the study phase is the responsibility<br />
of Helsinki Cultural Office. Expenditure was 8,940 euros of<br />
the appropriation.<br />
Investments<br />
Appropriations amounting to 433,171 euros were spent on<br />
movable assets included in investments. The biggest<br />
acquisitions were at the International Cultural Centre Caisa<br />
(87,008 euros), at the Stoa Cultural Centre of Eastern<br />
Helsinki (82,201 euros), at the Savoy unit (56,672 euros),<br />
and for the entire Cultural Office’s consolidated IT<br />
purchases (54,338 euros).<br />
Construction<br />
Appropriations amounting to 83,248 euros were spent<br />
on construction. The biggest projects were at the<br />
Annantalo Arts Centre, 21,337 euros, which included<br />
painting the classrooms, renovating the working<br />
facilities and repairing windows, and at Caisa, 61,911<br />
euros, including design and conversion work on the<br />
new premises.<br />
