Abstract
This thesis discusses genius loci. It is built on the premise that landscape architects intuitively
understand and are influenced by the concept but could use a more concrete interpretation of
it. The aim is to present possible answers for these questions:
How can the landscape architect interpret the concept of genius loci?
How can the landscape architect work practically to find the genius of a place?
By analyzing the concept of genius loci from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, I
hope to increase the understanding of how and why landscape architects could use it.
Through studies of Christian Norberg-Schulz’ book Genius loci: towards a phenomenology
of architecture and other literature, and through interviews and reflections on my own
practice, I have reached the conclusion that my premise is correct. The landscape architect
understands genius loci as a feeling, having great influence on her practical work. The
theories of Norberg-Schulz can be translated into tools for analyze, which can help the
landscape architect use genius loci in a more conscious and systematic manner and thereby
find a great inspiration and guidance in the process of creating good places.
