SUMMARY
Aiming at lower energy use and lower cost in buildings, district heating is sometimes
combined with exhaust air heat pump. Previously this was found mainly in large
buildings, but in recent years it has become more frequent also in single-family
houses. Coming requirements on delivered amount of energy might further influence
towards this direction. In this report conditions during which combination can be
useful is first discussed, from the point of view of the property owner and the district
heating company, based on economy and possible energy savings.
The main part of the report describes different technical solutions when combining
district heating and exhaust air heat pump. Advantages and disadvantages of different
solutions are given. Multi-family houses and single-family houses are treated in two
separate chapters because their economic conditions are widely different. Influence
on district heating return temperature, annual variation in load on district heating
network, coefficient of performance of the heat pump and the complexity (closely
linked to function and economy) of the solution are important parameters treated.
The most economically viable solution for the property owner varies a lot depending
on the current conditions, primarily concerning energy use and the relation between
electricity price and district heating price. Guidance in this selection is given in the
end of the chapters about multi-family houses and single-family houses respectively.
