Report For Signalisten by David Villarroel November 15, 2007
Laboratory Test Results of the Ventilation ducts
Introduction
Signalisten, a social housing corporation in northern Stockholm, approached Tetex
Konsulter AB and KTH for a ventilation retrofit project concerning air quality within
their apartments. Signalisten’s apartments will need to meet future government
regulations in indoor radon emission levels together with low energy use. To accomplish
this task, a new ventilation duct system was proposed to increase air flow into the
apartments. The apartments would be fitted with a new duct system for supplied air to
each of the rooms.
Purpose
As suggested by the introduction, the new duct system is to be tested before any
installation occurs in the apartments. Signalisten would like the duct design to meet
appropriate pressure drops and air flow requirements, therefore an experiment conducted
over a configuration of ducts was proposed. The experiment is located in KTH’s Energi
Tillämpad Termodynamik (ETT) laboratories. Further tests will be conducted in a test
apartment, where a prototype of the duct system will be installed.
In cooperation with Tetex Konsulter AB, pressure drops and air flows were measured to
evaluate the performance of the different duct configurations. These results will confirm
the sizing of the air supply fans to meet required indoor air quality.
As with every air duct installation, the sound the air makes in the ducts must be observed.
High sound levels in the ducts would cause tenants unnecessary nuisance and therefore
must be eliminated. The experiments conducted will also cover sound tests in the
laboratory and at the test apartment.
