Field, March 25, 1991 How's this for a recession-proof business? Lotteries bring in $20 billion a year in revenues, cash-starved states want more, and the betting habit may be addictive. FORTUNE Magazine – WHEN NEW YORK State held its Super Lotto drawing in late January, neither war nor recession nor bitter cold could keep residents from forming long lines to buy just a few more tickets for the $90 million jackpot. Retailers sold 61 million tickets in ten days -- more than 21,000 a minute near the end… …Nationwide, thousands of bedazzled winners have helped make lotteries one of America's most unexpected growth industries. Last year 32 states and the District of Columbia sold about 20 billion tickets -- or $109 worth for every man, woman, and child in lottery states. This year growth should continue on course -- in spite of the recession. In fact, Terri La Fleur, senior editor of Gaming & Wagering Magazine, predicts a 12% increase in sales in 1991.”
Bolagsanalys 27 Betsson “Gambling fever hits S Korea By Caroline Gluck in Seoul, Wednesday, 26 December, 2001, 14:11 GMT South Korea may be feeling the pinch of recession, but with hard times looming, the country's gambling industry is cashing in. The industry, which was worth about $5m last year, just keeps growing. Analysts say the economic downturn has driven South Koreans increasingly to pin their hopes on hitting the jackpot. With the opening of the country's first on-line lottery in 2002, the lottery market alone is expected to double. And as the country prepares to co-host the World Cup finals with Japan, football fever is expected to drive ever more people to take a punt. “ “Looking at Gaming Stocks? It's Tough to Beat the House By James K. Glassman, Published: MONDAY, MARCH 5, 2001 In a slowing economy, the gaming business, believe it or not, provides a good hedge. When times get tough, gamblers keep gambling. During the recession year of 1991, for example, Mandalay Resort Group, a typical gaming company, increased its revenues 15 percent. Earnings rose from 87 cents a share in 1989 to $1.41 in 1992.”
