på stranden vid Kailua möttes nykomlingarna av synen av hundratals hawaiianer.
Missionären Hiram Bingham beskriver dramatiskt synen:
As we proceeded to the shore, the multitudinous, shouting, and almost naked natives, of
every age, sex, and rank, swimming, floating on surf-boards, sailing in canoes, sitting,
lounging, standing, running like sheep, dancing, or laboring on shore, attracted our earnest
attention, and exhibited the appalling darkness of the land which we had come to
enlighten. 218
Denna första grupp missionärer hade lämnat sitt hemland med klara instruktioner om hur
de skulle bedriva missionen och vad de skulle uppnå med den. 219 Förutom att sprida Guds
budskap och den kristna läran såg de sig som ”civiliseringsagenter” med målet att leda
hawaiianerna till ett ”bättre” liv, eller som Hiram Bingham sammanfattar:
…turn them from their follies and crimes, idolatries and oppressions, to the service and
enjoyment of the living God, and adorable Redeemer, – to give them the Bible in their own
tongue, with ability to read it for themselves, – introduce and extend among them the more
useful arts and usages of civilized and Christianized society, and to fill the habitable parts of
those important islands with schools and churches, fruitful fields, and pleasant dwellings. 220
Avsikten med missionen var att en så stor del som möjligt av befolkningen skulle kunna ta
del av deras budskap. Att bara instruera en enda by eller att begränsa tillgängligheten till ett
fåtal utvalda skulle innebära att en stor del av befolkningen skulle bli utan upplysning och
fortsätta leva sina liv i vad som beskrivs som ett liv i ett mörker av vidskepelse och
okunnighet. 221 Missionärerna ansåg att de själva skulle fungera som goda exempel och visa
hur man borde leva och uppföra sig. En konsekvens av detta var, vilket jag tidigare nämnt,
att man sände ut inte bara missionärerna utan också deras hustrur. Ogifta missionärer
borde alltså vara gifta innan de fick resa iväg. Familjen blev en idealbild för det civiliserade
kristna samhället, en bild man trodde skulle påverka och övertyga hawaiianerna att ta emot
läran och livsformen. 222 Familjen var således ett viktigt fundament till en ny nation både
som metafor och som social organisationsmodell och denna familjebild skulle vidareföras
till hawaiianerna.
The women’s hats are so different, they poke out in the front, the faces are way inside of them,
the necks are stretched out.’ Therefore the women were named ‘stretched out necks.’”

Ingenting sägs om ”förståelse” av hawaiianernas trossystem, kultur, samhällsorganisation osv.
utan instruktionen utgår från missionsskolans entydigt kristna och amerikanska perspektiv i alla
avseenden.
