A jump by an opponent raises the level 1 step. This does not apply for the first opponent bid after
"auction start", where the table values are used. E.g. 1H-(X)-1N-(3S);X is Take-out, whereas 1S-(3H)-
X is optional.
In certain auctions, the level-based rule is overridden. The exceptions below are listed in ascending
priority, i.e. items later in the list have precedence.
* Doubler is a limited hand and acting alone: Take-out. This applies whenever doubler's partner may
have 0 hcp. E.g. 2C-(X)-p-(4S);X or 1C-p-1D-(3S);X is take-out.
* We have found a 7+ trump suit: invitational to game. E.g. 1S-(p)-2H-(3C);X is invitational to 4S.
* We have established a logical force to a higher bid: Penalty at 3-level or higher.
E.g. 2D-(p)-2S-(3C);X or 1M-(p)-2N-(3m);X is penalty.
* Doubler has bid pass over this suit before:
a) Partner has only passed: Penalty unless suit was raised to
2-level. E.g. (1S)-p-(1N)-p;(2S)-X is penalty.
(1S)-p-(2S)-p;(p)-X is T/O.
b) Partner has bid or doubled: T/O the following round on non-jumps.
E.g. (1S)-p-(1N)-2H;(2S)-X is T/O, (1D)-p-(1S)-2C;(3S)-X is
penalty.
c) Otherwise penalty
* Doubler has shown a limited, balanced hand: Penalty at 3-level and higher.
* The opponents are running from a penalty double: Penalty. E.g.
(1S)-p-(p)-X;(p)-p-(2C)-X is penalty.
* Partner has shown at least 54 in two suits: Penalty. E.g. 1S-(2C)-X-(p);2H-(3C)-X is penalty.
* Partner has shown a 6+ suit: Penalty. E.g. 1S-(P)-1N-(2D);2S-(3D)-X
is penalty. (1N is a transfer to clubs in Magic.)
* Partner has preempted: Penalty. (Identical to rule above for older players.)
* Pass is forcing: Penalty
