To disseminate knowledge of new methods and strategies such as those
developed by the new MINSALT project, the National Road Administration has
concentrated on distributing various types of information to its own operating
organisation. Since there was a need to provide a better decision basis for contractors,
the National Road Administration initiated a project to develop a prototype
for an expert system, VVVEXP. Expert systems or knowledge systems are
computer programs that attempt to solve problems in the same way as a human
expert. The knowledge in the programs consists of rules in a database that have
been identified and written down during interviews with experts in the area. Using
an expert system facilitates the choice of the correct and most effective action, and
thereby enhances the prospects of reducing salt consumption and reducing the
accident risk on roads in winter. VVEXP was tested for two winter seasons in two
operating districts and was well received by the users. However, owing to funding
problems, further development of VVEXP was discontinued.
There is a need for development of a new expert system for winter road maintenance.
