2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER
Uppsala University has captured grants awards from the Swedish government’s
strategic research initiatives for research within Care Sciences (U-CARE).
The aim of this research area is the promotion of psychosocial health among
patients struck by somatic disease, and their significant others. Collaboration
within the fields of clinical research activities focus on pediatric oncology,
adult oncology and cardiology. In addition, UU has received governmental
strategic funds for cancer research within the U-CAN program. The main
goal of U-CAN is to adapt future therapy to the disease of the individual
cancer patient. There appears to be good quality research being undertaken
within both U-CAN and U-CARE.
Quality of Research
Research in U-CAN and U-CARE is considered nationally leading and has
earned international recognition. The report refers to research constellation
that either have present or future research impacts. These include: human
genetics, which is a research collaboration with the University of Bergen;
this has led to findings about communicating genetic risks. Pressure ulcers
research has been integrated in the national patient safety program organized
by The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. Quality
of life assessment in somatic disease has an international profile with regard
to different cancers and cardiology. Rehabilitation research (with its emphasis
on the effect of physical activity on health and disease) and behavioral
medicine and physiotherapy (where physiotherapists in primary care help
patients with persistent pain) have gained considerable national and international
attention. Overall most of these areas are strong nationally with
some international dissemination and relevance.
Under the theme patient focused research and research focused on specialized
care the self-evaluation report outlines a list of 5 areas outlining
research studies and outcomes relating to a range of specialties from paediatric
care to oncology with overall international recognition.
Under the research theme caring, prevention and rehabilitation there are
10 research areas identified. Some of these are quite impressive, particularly
the research carried out in the field of quality of care and patient safety.
There is evidence of good international collaborations and international recognition.
Under the research theme methodological, organizational, cultural and
societal perspectives 11 areas are highlighted for inclusion with overall international
recognition. While not many of these relate to methodological
research, there is a broad range of studies in areas as diverse as social
medicine and pharmacy. There are also good psychological research projects
completed and ongoing.
