2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER
STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY
The research report concerns Care Sciences at The Faculty of Social Sciences,
including the Stress Research Institute (Stress), Department of Computer
and Systems Sciences (DSV), Department of Social Work (SOC), Centre
for Health Equity Studies (CHESS), and finally the Department of Education
(EDU).
The SU definition of care science has been broadened to include some
research that is outside the (SFO) scope.
Quality of Research
Stress: Research on stress and health related problems, interventions in companies/organisations.
Internationally known research – papers in high impact
journals and collaboration with international leaders – strong area.
DSV: applies computer and systems sciences, methods such as requirement
engineering, and innovative simulation environments, and simulation applied
to medical education, incl. virtual patients. The work on virtual patient
is very good – five articles in Medical Teacher. The remainder of computer
science output tends to be in low impact journals, but from some time ago.
Soc looking into informal care, carried out by non-health care workers,
and study health trends and their implications for resource allocation, and
socioeconomic factors, and organisation of health care. Many articles but
some in Swedish journals, better articles from the Epidemiology group.
CHESS; studies socioeconomic and population issues and related health
and survival issues and social policy. Strong area with articles in good journals,
one of which is Lancet.
EDU, no Care Science research as the area was delineated in the SFO definition,
but has related research.
Research Collaborations and Networks (nationally and internationally)
All areas have wide national and international collaboration, very good for
a relatively small area of activity.
Future plans and potential
The plans are very brief and uncontroversial. Only three areas are listed for
future plans – Stress (continue ongoing research), DSV – development of
computer systems for patient records and studies of information and requirements
engineering modelling, more on Virtual patients, and SOC –
policy oriented research on care and epidemiological perspectives on Care
Sciences, i.e. cost of caring – formal and informal.
Good potential to grow in size and attract research funding.
