2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER Key achievements include a model for measuring criteria of medical care efforts at incident sites and simulations. The area Long-term disease conditions includes eight topics: Diabetes (fear of hypoglycaemia and effect of support programs based on cognitive behavioural therapy); Cardiovascular disease (effects of information and education to patients and families, importance of psychological factors on persons living, and the life situation in patients with peripheral arterial disease); Rheumatoid arthritis (well-being and coping strategies in persons with severe disease); Inflammatory bowel disease (project planned in collaboration with Stockholm); Stroke (nutrition difficulties); Cancer (patient and relatives experience of stemcell transplantation and care at home or in hospital); COPD and asthma (Patient education and information, diagnostic issues and monitoring of treatment); and finally Patient safety and communication (resistance to antibiotics, early detection of pressure ulcers, infection prevention in cancer patients, personnel education of municipality staff). Key achievements include knowledge of supportive programmes based on cognitive behavioural therapy and development and psychometric evaluation of questionnaires to measure fear of hypoglycaemia and problem areas of diabetes – to be used for research as well as practice. Palliative care research focus on fatigue-specific measurement instruments related to a variety of diseases and cultural aspects, a study in collaboration with Canada, Thailand, and Italy. The severely ill child (factors to minimise suffering and strengthen quality of life of patient and relatives); The interprofessional team; Health care environment (individualised care of dementia patients including effect of music and animals); Hemodialysis and the end of life (patients’ and relatives’ perception). Key achievement is EU projects aiming at optimising care of cancer patients. Project ongoing, SUC:s contribute on consolidating and standardising research methods. Women and child health indicate four topics: Infertility (quantitative register studies, qualitative studies of parents experience); Prenatal diagnosis (women’s experience of informed choice, ethical management of genetic risk information); Fetal death (patients and relatives experiences); and Induced abortion (studies of posttraumatic stress disorder and depressive symptoms) Key achievements include better information practice across Sweden of parents who have lost a child All four research areas have a strong position nationally and internationally. However, not yet clear leading positions. The inclusion in the EUprogram of palliative care, and the wide international collaboration within emergency care is promising. Of note is that the researchers involved and leading the themes have a primary responsibility in nurse teaching (presu- 78 VETENSKAPSRÅDETS KARTLÄGGNING, UTVÄRDERING OCH REKOMMENDATIONER ANGÅENDE SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING

In spite of this, they report some interesting and impressive links into international research collaborations (e.g. the 7th Framework OPCARE9 project, which seeks to optimize the end of life care for cancer patients in Europe and the work on artificial ventilation). Most of the key publications listed include journals of high international standard. Publications show excellent potential, with some in very good quality journals (e.g. J. Ad Nursing; Patient Education and Counseling; Supportive Care in Cancer; Palliative Medicine; Journal of Pain and Symptom Management). However, there are also quite some publications within Scandinavian journals and Swedish books. Research collaboration and networks (national and international) SHH has wide collaboration with other HEIs around Sweden and Nordic countries. Nationally, they report collaborations in each of the themes, which are supporting research development; particularly extensive national collaborations are visible under the long term conditions theme. Internationally, the EU collaboration between seven European countries regarding the palliative care theme shows excellent potential for future work. The women and child health theme and the emergency care theme also have some international links in place. Future plans and potential Plans for development within next few years include increasing the number of PhD-students and senior researchers (Emergency Medicine). In some of the areas (Palliative care) the plan is to widen up the target groups, whereas in others (Long term disease conditions) the plan is to focus on previously established parts (DM) and build up a better research infrastructure, involving laboratory departments. The area of Women’s and child’s health will probably extend with plans of a maternity hospital locally. One aspect of their future planning is to address the issue of authority to award doctoral degrees. If SUC can achieve some more sustained research focus through gaining funds, professorial appointments, authority to award PhDs, they should make steady progress. Overall assessment of strong and weak research areas Overall there is good potential in all four research areas and strong collaborations nationally and internationally. However, lead positions have not yet been reached. SUC has great potential and should strive for being recognised to award doctoral degrees. Overall rating: D (good nationally) VETENSKAPSRÅDETS KARTLÄGGNING, UTVÄRDERING OCH REKOMMENDATIONER ANGÅENDE SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING 79
