2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER
why particular issues were of concern to health care, the reasons why research
was important for those areas, and a description of the studies. This was often
at the expense of describing research, its results and its impacts. The self-evaluation
report was disorganized and did not answer the evaluation questions
directly or fully. There was evidence of similar themes between research areas
(e.g. in workplace health, and adolescent health) without clear collaboration.
The impression was given that the University has no plans to identify “Care
Sciences research” as an area to integrate and take forward.
There appears to be only few lecturers compared to Senior Lecturers and
the majority of staff are in nursing followed by public health, other health
sciences and social work; however the majority of external funding is for
‘other health sciences’. There are almost twice as many staff over 50 years as
there are below 50 years so sustainability, growth and succession planning
could be an issue. With the exception of some of the public health research,
most of this research was of a national/Regional/local standard (D/E).
MÄLARDALEN UNIVERSITY
Mälardalen university (MdH) is a young institution, it was established in
1977, and has now 13000 students. It is the largest of the nurse training institutions.
The main subject area is nursing, followed by social work and
physiotherapy; there is internal funding only for nursing research; external
funding of over 2 million SEK each for nursing research and social work
in 2010. Research is managed under three divisions: Individual and applied:
educational and professional; social and system. Research covers a broad
range of topics and disciplines.
In June 2011, MdH was permitted to grant doctorates in Caring Sciences.
MdH grounds its research in the needs of surrounding counties, while doing
generalizable research to national level, a sensible strategy. There is also evidence
of international projects e.g. in South Africa and Mozambique.
Quality of Research
Individual and applied –This area covers a range of activity from the new
born to the elderly and includes product development. The list of research
subjects include repetition which seems to indicate collaborative projects
between groups within one research area. The behavioural medicine approach
taken in physiotherapy is considered nationally leading and possibly
internationally leading.
Collaboration is not extensive, but well documented with publications
(some of which however relate to research before the evaluation period).
Mainly national collaboration and nationally recognition are mentioned.
