Future plans
In addition to further develop the already existing main research areas, MU
efforts will be invested to develop three more areas. The future plans for
oral health look strong, and appropriate, with sensible focus on filling existing
knowledge gaps and building on existing strengths.
Overall assessment of strong and weak research areas
It seems as the research areas are strong both in relation to key assessments
nationally and or internationally. Research in oral health seems to be very
good. The research in nursing and social work also seem to be good. Faculty
of Health and Society has also a plan for further development in Care Sciences
developing three new areas building on existing main research areas.
However one concern is the rather low number of professors in nursing.
The overall rating of Malmö University is an average; the oral health research
is evaluated to be at the A level, while the rest of the research is rated
as a C level. Since oral health is by far the largest research subject, the total
(and average) rating for MU is B (Internationally Excellent).
MID SWEDEN UNIVERSITY
The Department of Health Sciences at Mid Sweden University pursues
Care Sciences at the individual, group, organization and community level.
Its research focuses on health and ill health across the life cycle in children
and young people, people of working age, and the elderly. A number of
its research sites include a gender perspective. Care Sciences are located in
Public Health, Nursing Research, Rehabilitation Sciences and Social Work.
Quality of Research
• Public Health Research The research conducted in Public Health is in five
main areas: The world of work; child and adolescent health; violence and
related problems; the relationship between psychosocial factors and somatic
diseases, and mental illness in different groups. The ABUEL project
involving 7 European countries investigates violence against the elderly.
Results have been disseminated and are in a WHO report.
• Nursing Science Research The Research in Nursing takes place in six main
areas: Child and adolescent health, youth health habits and perceptions of
social capital; people’s perceptions of childbirth care; mental health from
different aspects such as gender, age and context; caring in difficult life situations;
relationship between psychosocial factors and somatic disorders
in adults and the elderly; perspectives on carers/nurses’ perceptions of
care and relationships. The project “Caesarean without a medical indica-
