2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER
with a professor in nursing appointed in 1988. A large number of individuals
contribute to the Care Sciences activity: covering a broad spectrum of areas
of activity. Main research subjects include nursing (the largest), occupational
therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation medicine, and speech and language
pathological science. Research income seems reasonably distributed
across all areas of activity. Subject areas do not entirely reflect the research
areas that are described in the rest of the document. The Self-evaluation
report itself is well done, but not consistent across research areas.
Quality of research
Health promotion and prevention – (including Oto-rhino-laryngology, technology
and Care Sciences, lifestyle intervention and implementation, National
Institute for Ageing and Later Life (NISAL), and hormone replacement therapy).
One area focuses on reduced tonsillectomy, demonstrating good effect.
Main contribution to Care Sci is a validated instrument for outcome measure.
Another focus is on haemodialysis – patients perceived health and quality of
life. In both these areas biomedical research is more evident in pubs than the
Care Sci. A third topic is Lifestyle interventions, aiming at designing and evaluating
computerized life style interventions (alcohol and stress). The group
has been leading nationally with regards to theoretical and practical implementation
research. NISAL is doing in the last phase of life as a care context;
care in the context of ageing and disability; civil society as care context; and
local settings, housing and technology as care context. There is little publication
evidence presented of what NISAL has accomplished, though they claim
to have developed new theoretical knowledge. Finally, this group includes an
area within treatment of menopause by alternative technology. 4 of the 10
publications for the group are in this area. 2 seem quite biomedical.
Nursing Research – A mixed portfolio of research – self-care and patient
education of heart failure patients with EU collaboration; chemotherapyinduced
nausea and vomiting, and a longitudinal studies of different interventions
– raising international respect; malnutrition and osteoporotic fractures;
pressure ulcer prevention; palliative care; sleep disorders of coronary
artery disease patients; distress symptoms among colorectal cancer patients;
neonatal intensive care and effect on parent infant attachment. Several studies
are descriptive or experimental with long-term follow-up. The focus
and strategy of this group is unclear but much of the research seems to have
considerable societal impact. Publications are in good journals.
Physiotherapy: Focus on intervention for musculoskeletal and pain disorders,
contributing methods of classification and measurement. Several
RCTs ongoing. The group has a leading position nationally/internationally
in the area of epidemiology and prevention of sports injury. Involved in a
