Overall assessment of strong and weak research areas
In summary, Caring Sciences has been developed over the past three years
in University West and the relative youth of this area of activity is perhaps
reflected in the overall score awarded. There is evidence particularly in the
list of publications that research is being published in journals with an international
standing and the development trajectory is clearly in the right
direction for achievement of internationally recognised centre. This can
only be achieved however, through development of a robust strategy for
future development that maps onto the overall aspiration of the institution.
Overall rating: D (Regionally/Nationally recognised) with emerging evidence of
international recognition particularly from the cited publications.
KARLSTAD UNIVERSITY
Care science research at Karlstad University has a broad multidisciplinary
base, incorporating three different faculties. These are: Faculty of Social and
Life Sciences (Department of Nursing & Department of Health and Environmental
Sciences & Oral Health); Faculty for Economic Sciences, Communication
and IT: (Department of Psychology) and the Faculty of Technology and
Science (Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences).
Quality of Research
Care Sciences research at Karlstad University consists of four main areas:
A. Health and quality of life among patients/users of health care; B. Building
research evidence of importance for health care; C. Quality and safety of health
care services; D. Structure, manpower/resources and performance of health care
as a system. Within each of these main areas there are research programmes.
For instance, ‘Across the lifespan’ and ‘Living with specific medical conditions’
are programmes within A. Biological mechanisms of illness, Management,
treatment and prevention of illness, and Assessment and monitoring
of illness are programmes within B. More generic to care settings and more
specific to care settings are programmes within C. The Organization of
care services, Research utilization among nurses in clinical practice, and
Nursing education and professional development are programmes within
D. In each of these ten research programmes there are a number of studies
undertaken on care issues across the lifespan and include organisational
and pedagogic research. Apart from a few examples such as the research
on nursing education and professional development and research in the
context of the QPP model, most of the research topics are of national or
sub-national levels.
