Quality of research
For each of the main research areas the most important publications from
2005 are listed. The research projects are often collaborative, interdisciplinary
and from various fields and. Mostly the papers are published in nursing
journals, which must be seen in connection with the high number of staff
engaged in nursing as primary subject of research.
The majority of the eight main research areas report 10 publications
though it is noted that Quality of life and health in the elderly only reports
7. Many of the publications cited are in good quality international journals.
Furthermore, the research cited is of clinical relevance. It is also noted that
the same authors are cited time and again and it would appear that the number
of research active staff who are publishing might be a small percentage
of the overall total of staff.
Research Collaboration and Networks (nationally and internationally)
University West lists up a number of national and international collaborations
for each of the main areas without indicating in what form this
collaboration takes place. The examples cited include the Universities of
Gothenburg, Linköping and Umea. Internationally, Centres in Norway, Finland
and Israel are included.
Future plans and potential
In the future plans University West indicate that they will aim to
strengthen their research activities but they do not really say how this
will be achieved. It is also difficult to understand how they have decided
on areas of priority. For example, it is clear that the University wants to
continue to develop patient-based research, mental illness and health and
salutogenesis but how or why is not apparent. It may be more appropriate
to concentrate on a smaller number of research areas as suggested by University
West in their future plans and to concentrate on those areas of
international importance. More international collaboration should also
feature in any future plans.
There is very little detail provided regarding links between the Care Science
Strategy and the overall institutional strategy. It would have been useful
to understand strategies on recruitment of research staff, succession planning,
more early career researchers, enhancing multidisciplinarity, upgrading
infrastructure, revisiting the research strategy and plans for internationalisation,
PhD students and grant awards.
