2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER peer-reviewed international journals. In each of the 4 areas there are studies that have led to some achievements – mainly within Sweden Research collaboration and networks (national and international) Borås has national research collaboration with several universities and hospitals. The collaboration is reflected in co-supervision of PhD students. However, it is unclear what the role of Borås staff is within these projects. For instance, how many of them are PIs and how many publications arose from these collaborations? There are a few international research collaborations outlined in the self-evaluation report. International collaboration includes Bournemouth University UK, membership of European Academy of Caring Science, and Flinders University in Australia. • Existential Caring Issues, In this area there are seven projects highlighted. In all seven there are collaborations with other Swedish universities. It seems that most are funded by Borås University. • Caring Didactics Issues, In this area many of the studies are confined to Borås University. A small number involve other Swedish universities and there is one collaboration with Bournemouth University in England and one with the University of Ulster. • Care Ethics, In this area there are links with other Swedish universities and other organisations. • Pre-hospital Emergency Care, There are a number of studies highlighted under this research area and other Swedish universities are involved in a small number of studies. Future plans and potential The Borås report includes a number of ongoing large projects within each of the four main research areas. Future plans focus on development of Integrative Care Development with three main cornerstones: Caring Science, Care Ethic, and Care Management. The latter research domain is aspirational. They wish to recognize Care Ethics as a research subject separated from Caring Science. The overall research focus will be developed further with the aim to obtain right to award doctoral degrees in Caring Science. However, concrete plans for the research domains are not indicated. We would have liked to see future plans relating to the number of new research staff and doctoral students and the number of new grants or international collaborations established. Overall assessment of strong and weak research areas University of Borås has achieved good quality research within the four themes. The research is relevant for clinical care and societal wellbeing. There are many examples of national collaboration within Sweden and some international collaboration. The plan for the future is rather philosophical, discussing terms of Care Science Research. One important strategy indicated is striving for recognition to award doctoral degrees. However, there is a need for designing clear and concrete plans and research programmes including wider internationalisation. Overall rating: D (good nationally) UNIVERSITY OF GÄVLE Main Research Areas Nursing seems to be the largest subject of research. University of Gävle is not yet granted permission to conduct post-graduate education or award doctorates within the caring sciences. Activity falls under two units: • The Centre for Musculoskeletal health (physiotherapy) – Centre of Excellence award Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Work (FAS) • Department of Occupational and Public Health Sciences (Nursing & General Medicine). Research is subdivided into four areas: 1) Care of the elderly, 2) Long term conditions, 3) Health promoting activity and 4) Neck pain. Their present research teams consist of “researchers who have received their PhDs some years ago, and who have now started new research projects”. Quality of Research Care of the elderly – mainly national collaboration. Outputs include one conference paper and one book chapter and are mostly at a regionally / nationally recognized level with one or two internationally recognized. Health promoting – Mostly international collaboration but this does not seem to necessarily translate through to the outputs which are mostly at a regionally / nationally recognized level with one or two internationally recognized.
