Key achievements: Results from one study showed that if a previous negative,
childbirth experience was associated with subsequent fear of new
childbirths. Other research on violent encounters in psychiatric care highlighted
the necessity of interpersonal encounters
Caring Didactics Issues Research themes in this area include: learning strategies
which strengthen carers’ preparedness to meet the patient’s life world;
learning support which can optimize learning processes of students and carers;
didactics that strengthen the patient’s own ability to achieve health
and wellbeing; strategies to communicate research findings with the caring
practitioners and to facilitate implementation of research findings in practice.
In this area many of the studies are confined to Borås University. A
small number involve other Swedish universities and there is one collaboration
with Bournemouth University in England and one with the University
of Ulster.
Key achievements: In the research into Innovative learning environments
the focus is on the intertwining process of theory, practice and life-world
and how to acquire understanding of the patient’s world. This research has
resulted in the establishment of educational units
Care Ethics The main foci are Health care priority setting; Patient centred
care; Clinical ethical reflection; Pre-hospital Care Ethics. In this area there
are links with other Swedish universities and other organisations. Key achievements:
Within Prehospital Care Ethics the research group undertook
an international survey of ethical problems within prehospital care. The
resultant article was one of the ten most downloaded articles in Nursing
Ethics during 2007–2008.
Pre-hospital Emergency Care, There are a number of studies highlighted under
this research area: Experiences of patients and relatives; The assessment
phase in pre-hospital emergency care; Life-saving care in emergency situations;
Pre-hospital treatment and care; Pre-hospital care ethics; Working environment
in pre-hospital emergency care; Ethical and existential dilemmas
in combat areas; Development of an educational unit; Optimal level of care
for people with non-urgent conditions.
Other Swedish universities are involved in a small number of studies.
Key achievements: The LINDRA study evaluates whether there is an association
between the caring approach and the degree of cardiac pain relief.
Preliminary results from 1800 patients suggest that patients treated by specially
educated ambulance nurses have better pain relief and less anxiety
after admission to hospital. Key publications listed in the report are in good
