In health care ethics, most of the outputs listed are not in English, except the work by Nordenfelt. Research collaboration and networks Research collaboration is mainly in the area of palliative care and this, for the most part, is limited to collaborations within Sweden, for example: research collaboration is on-going with Umeå University, Mid Sweden University, University of Tromsö, Stockholm Sjukhem Foundation, Linnaeus University, University of Gothenburg, Haugesund College, Gjövik College, Örebro University and Karolinska Institutet. Involvement in an EU funded project “Dignity and Older Europeans” involved partnership between seven European countries, England, Ireland, France, Spain, Slovakia, Poland and Sweden and has led to the publication of a very well respected book on Dignity in Care for Older People. Future plans and potential There are plans in place to build on the themes of research already in place. Although the need is acknowledged to develop stronger international links to support the development of the research, the plans to address are limited in scope. The new palliative care research centre, with its new professorial appointments, should provide an opportunity to address these issues. Continued investment in palliative care research includes plans to conduct research on children’s severe disease and death, in collaboration with a hospice for children and young people. There are also plans to develop further research in care of the old in nursing homes. The research on companion animals in therapy and rehabilitation will also continue. Overall assessment of strong and weak research areas The main focus of research at the Ersta Sköndal University College is palliative care, where there is some internationally recognized research. Care of the old and health care ethics research do not have such a high a profile but there is some very good work ongoing in these fields too, for example, that relating to dignity in older age, which also has international recognition. Overall, the synthesis of nursing, ethics and philosophical perspectives in palliative and old age care, extending into studies of staff stress and moral distress, is a strength. Other strengths are the evidence that the researchers use both qualitative and qualitative methods and that many of the studies are interdisciplinary. The reporting of good links between teaching and research (including some public involvement) in palliative care and care of the old is welcome. The lack of large externally peer reviewed funded projects from the EU is a weakness. In addition, the overall publication portfolio could be more ambitiously targeted in the future, thus extending the international impact of this body of research. Overall rating: C/D (Internationally recognised/Nationally) GOTHENBURG UNIVERSITY The research at Gothenburg University is undertaken across several Care Science Departments. However, most of the activities are concentrated in the Sahlgrenska Academy, and mainly in the Institutes of Health and Care Sciences, Neuroscience and Physiology, and Medicine. These institutes include nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, rehabilitation, primary health care, occupational health, public health and epidemiology. Main Research Areas Four mature research areas are identified. These are symptoms and related intervention, which involves addressing areas such as pain, fatigue, fear and anxiety in patients with heart failure, cancer, musculoskeletal diseases and gastro-intestinal disorders. The interest in symptom research was developed in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University. Promotion of a healthy life includes studies in a range of areas across the primary, secondary and tertiary health promotion fields. Contexts and circumstances cover a broad spectrum from caring models to the environmental impact on patients’ experiences of health. The aim of the Research methodology area is to develop methods that are based on the subject/person and not the object/disease and that can be used on a group level. Various quantitative and qualitative methodologies have been used and refined and several instruments have been developed and psychometrically tested. Quality of Research Symptoms and related intervention, This research area represents a bold and innovative programme that addresses symptom problems of universal significance. For instance, research has shown that person-centred care can save money with reduced hospital stay and enabling people to return to work. Work in maternal health, dental anxiety, non-pharmacological treatment of migraine headache in children, and a focus on fatigue are all significant.
