2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER
Quality of the research
SAA research area includes one of four regional centres for the Swedish National
(longitudinal) study on Ageing and Care, with 17 associated current or
completed PhDs, and a number of associated publications. This appears a solid
ongoing research core, but the degree to which it has or will lead to the initiation
of independent related projects exploring questions which arise from
this study, perhaps with different methodologies, was not discussed. The SAA
research area was involved in the EURHOMAP project on home care services
in Europe ending in 2010 (resulting so far in a systematic review publication).
In addition, a three year grant to focus on case management in frail older people
is reported. SAA had 7 peer reviewed publications and 3 others, showing
particular strength in relation to the SNAC study.
There was lack of consistency between different parts of the questionnaire
in the description of the HT health area in terms of the themes of
research and how these map onto publications, grants, collaborations and
future plans. In this theme, EU funding has been gained from the European
Regional Development Fund (mainly) for a research laboratory testing IT
solutions for health care environments, which links to a European collaboration
with 12 partners in e government and e health. HT also includes the
use of telemedicine and technology in home care settings. Projects reported
as ongoing link computer science and health sciences (risk of hospitalization;
waiting list management and the use of games to support health/
physical activity). Four peer reviewed publications were documented, five
conference contributions and two others.
With specific regard to publication output: the earliest reported output
is 2008 so the School has made good progress to be able to report 10 items
under each theme and there are some good international level publications
in journals with modest impact factors.
A good track record in PhD completions is reported in the self-assessment.
Research income: nursing is the main subject of research and has been
mainly internally funded; most external funding is for “other health sciences”.
Research Collaborations and Networks
Collaboration is reported as mainly intra-institutional across disciplines,
which is reasonable for a research area that is just starting to grow and needs
to develop interdisciplinarity. There is clear potential to build on some national
and EU collaborations already in place.
Future plans and potential
The self-evaluation notes movement between the key themes by researchers
and the fact that BTH Care Sciences is at an early stage of development.
