2 KARTLÄGGNING OCH UTVÄRDERING AV SVENSK VÅRDFORSKNING – HUVUDRAPPORT OCH UNDERLAG FÖR VETENSKAPSRÅDETS REKOMMENDATIONER gic plans about research collaborations, outcomes, human, physical, financial resources and links to wider institutional strategies. It must be important for the Care Sciences in Sweden to establish interdisciplinary projects with the explicit aim of discovering innovative solutions to “old” problems. In conclusion, Care Sciences research is an important but complex area. Its complexity and breadth often mean that governments have difficulty identifying its activity and impact. The panel were pleased that there has been a great deal of support for such research in Sweden. The Swedish Government can be proud of much of the ongoing research activity in this field. In most cases, the expert scientific panel was impressed with the research staffing and infrastructure, research activities and outputs and future plans and collaborations. However, as expected in a rapidly changing health agenda there were some areas where improvements could be made. The panel hopes that its recommendations will lead to further advances in care science research in Sweden and contribute further to its international standing. The rationale for this delimitation of ‘Care Sciences’ is given as firstly, their research expertise in the field of care, older people, epidemiology and health technology and, secondly, their recognition of the complexity in contemporary society. The activity in these three areas has been the basis on which two partially interlinked research environments or research programmes have been created: 1. Sustainable active ageing (SAA): this encompasses multidisciplinary research taking a social sustainability perspective to older people’s health and care. Here the focus is on applied research and includes efforts to seek to understand perspectives of older people and to develop strategies for promotion and prevention at individual and societal levels. 2. Health and technology (HT) here the focus is on the role of ICT, including how older adults access IT and the role of IT in assisted living. Research has been carried out primarily through involvement in the Swedish National Study of Ageing and Care Project (SNAC). The self-evaluation report describes the work of a relatively small group of researchers (4 professors; 12 senior lecturers, 19 lecturers and 12 doctoral students). The majority of individuals are in nursing. The majority of staff are women, except at professorial level. The age profile is weighted towards those aged over 40. Care Sciences research at BTH has been reorganized since 2009 into the two research areas (SAA and HT described above). This is part of a strategy to create a smaller number of competitively strong research environments by the year 2017.
