Abstract
This report is the result of a project in an introductory course in mechatronics. The objective
was to integrate modules from each group members' areas of expertise into a functioning
prototype. The theme for the project was to make a dire daily activity more fun. The theme
was interpreted that it is never fun to oversleep, which arrived at a new type of alarm clock
being constructed. What is special about is that the off button for the alarm moves during the
night, which means that the person who needs to wake up has to get out of bed and find it.
The off button was rigged on to a self-driven robot that moves and navigates the room with
the help of two stepper motors and an ultrasound. On top of the robot there is a LED dot
matrix that displays the current time and scrolling text messages. Setting the alarm and what
time it is does with the help of a stationary base station with a touch screen. The
communication between the devices operates via Bluetooth.
At the end a working prototype was constructed as a "proof of concept” with a base station
made out of Plexiglas and a robot made out of bent aluminum.
