Some reflections
The results in sports are so much more than just a certain score, a
number of goals, or points and to determine whom the right winner is
demands knowledge of the sport as well as knowledge about the rule
and judging systems together with knowledge about the performance
itself. Questions about the “idea of the sport”, and the preferred
content in the sport, were asked to involved persons in the sports
acroski and RG. Those answers where then compared with the actual
rules in the sports. If the “right” things are not being measured the
“right” person cannot win. Depending on how the content of the rules,
how they are interpreted and how the judgement is performed, different
performances can win.
According to the interviews it sometimes happened in both acroski
and RG that the “wrong” person were winning a competition. In
regard with the measuring and judging problems even in sports where
the results are not mainly depending on a judge, it’s likely to believe
the “wrong” person sometimes wins even in those sports. In a world
where the results in sports has the impact and importance it now has
with a lot of money and the athletes future to a great deal depending
on the results, there is a responsibility for every sport to work to make
sure their measurements and judgements have good quality. Hopefully
this report has elucidated reliability and validity problems in the
measurements and judgements of sports. To look at other similar
sports and learn how they have dealt with problems in their sport, to
discuss between sports what has been done concerning the rules and
judging manuals, judging problems etc., can help all sports develop
and I hope this report will raise an interest for those questions for the
benefit of the athletes and the sports.
