eliability is perfect, the quality of the measurement is still not good. In
judging sports one of the main problems seemed to be to find a balance
to judge the sport with as high reliability as possible without it affecting
the validity in a negative matter.
Sports where goal, time etc., are the deciding factor of the results
might have some other problems than the above sports. To measure
time in hundreds of a second for an alpine skier, where the snow
conditions are changing a lot throughout the race and the best skiers
are in the first starting group to get the best conditions, is interesting.
In which other test are the best people given the best circumstances? It
would be similar to give the easiest test to the best students. New
measuring techniques and their possibilities for precise measurements
also brings forward the question of how to round off the scores. How
little or how big difference between the athletes is justifiable in the
determination of a winner? In situations where the result earlier would
have been tied it is now possible to decide a winner due to more
precise measurements. Results based on measurements are also partly
depending on a person’s ability to read the instruments, and with
photo finishes the winner is by a great part decided by a judgment. In
sports where records are measured in hundreds of a second it is
extremely important that everyone are competing on an equal length of
distance. That sounds like an obvious fact but after a second thought,
it’s easy to realize that is not so obvious. Not all swimming pools and
running tracks in the world can be exactly the same length and the
international federations have regulations for how much they maximum
are allowed to differ. Still very small length differences can be of
big importance in the determination of a record.
Even in sports where the numbers of goals determine the winner it
could be questioned if the “right” team always wins. Many times the
loosing team feels they are the best team because they played the most
offensive and the most technical game and had the best chances. The
goals in those sports are not either counted as goals before the referee
has approved them, which means that the judge or the referee has big
impact on the results.
